As a queen of hair dye and many years of shoving chemicals on my head every 4-6wks, I decided to go back to my natural colour which now turned out to be a very nice medium to dark ash blonde. However, the colour was a bit wishy washy and I wanted to enhance it and make it a bit more ‘brilliant’. So I was pleased when I came across the colour ‘Brilliant Dark Blonde’ in the Herbal Essences range. It looked like a nice soft, dark ash blonde. I did notice however that the model on the box did seem to have a few light blonde highlights in her hair which kinds of defeats the purpose of modelling a colour! This brand also appealed to me because of the more natural ingredients and no ammonia, which doesn’t give you that awful smell and stinks the whole house out.
It also comes nicely packaged in a sort of squashed round box to give it a unique shape rather than the typical standard square box. The colour comes in one small bottle and the developing lotion in a bigger plastic bottle. You also get quite a large sachet of after colour conditioner, which has the same smell as the shampoos, and conditioners you can get of the same brand. The instructions are clear and attached to them are some lovely thick green tinted gloves, which were a bit too big for me, and I have average sized hands with very long fingers. I also found the material they were made of a bit too thick to be able to ‘feel’ what you’re doing properly when applying the stuff.
After mixing together the colour and developing lotion, which turned into a rather scary orange colour, I proceeded to slap it on my bonce. I have thin hair but a lot of it and it’s just about grown to a couple of inches below collar length. I had just enough of the mixture to spread evenly through my hair. So anyone with longer hair will need two.
The smell is quite pleasant so I didn’t need to go running round the house trying to find a space of clean air before the stench engulfed me again. So I calmly watched the rest of a film and waited the 25mins for the colour to develop. When the time was up, I took a peek in the mirror and almost screamed in horror when I saw staring back at me some stranger with almost black hair! This can be quite normal though until you wash it off and dry your hair so I didn’t start panicking too much.
Washing it off was very easy and the entire colour washed out quickly, with some dyes you can be there for 1/2hr before it washed clear. Though my hair did feel very squeaky clean and a bit dry but then my hair is very dry anyway. I smoothed the sachet of after colour conditioner on and waited the required 2mins. After rinsing my hair felt incredibly soft, a first for me.
Now came the time to dry it and really see what the colour was like. To be honest, it looked nothing like the colour on the box and I’m very disappointed. I wasted £6.49 on this product. I stared at myself in horror at what looked like a badly styled, dark brown wig on my head; the roots were also a nice shade of ginger – not. (Though that is probably just because of the shades and tones in my natural colour) I might as well as bought a cheap dark brown colour but that wasn’t the effect I was after. I only hope this product fades fast when I wash it, which permanent dyes usually do on me.
Overall, a nice product to use but unfortunately the outcome leaves a lot to be desired.

Eye-catching title! I have dyed blonde hair, but I don't do it myself.
Advantages: Easy to use, no chemical odours and no irritation to scalp, natural looking results giving excellent condition and shine to hair Disadvantages: pricey, but I took advantage of a half-price offer
