WHAT COLOUR SHOULD I CHOOSE?

While doing the weekly shop at Asda on a Friday morning, my friend decided to try another hair colour. Not having coloured my hair for about four years, and being bored with mouse-brown (my natural colour) I also picked up a pack of hair dye. After a few minutes wrangling over what colour to go for, I decided to go for Clairol Nice'n'Easy 120 - Natural Dark Brown.
I am aware this review is quite long, so I've put information under headings. If you feel a section isn't interesting or relevant to you, please feel free to skip bits!
WHAT COLOUR SHOULD I CHOOSE? ******************************************** There are a few things to consider when dyeing your hair. First, what is your natural colour? It's never a good idea to use a home hair-dye if you're planning on changing your look dramatically, so unless you can afford the hairdresser's prices, go for a colour within two shades of your natural one. Secondly, you also should consider your skin tone. Most people have either pink-toned skin or yellow-toned skin. This applies to black skin too, but you'll have a different choice of colours which suit you. Have a close look in a mirror in front of a window. People with pink-toned skin should choose warm colours such as reds, mahoganies, or could choose many of the blonde shades. People with yellow-toned skin like myself, should steer clear of reds, or any blonde shade which is too pale, such as light ash blonde. Choose darker browns, or you can get away with blue-black, or go for a dark blonde. People with various shades of brown skin can often get away with colours other than black for their hair, even blonde but black hair is incredibly difficult to dye according to my friend and not having naturally black hair myself, I can't really offer any helpful advice I'm afraid.
Anyway, as I've said, I chose Natural Dark Brown as having yellowish skin and mid-brown hair I thought a darker colour would suit me.
PACKAGING AND INFORMATION *************************************** The packaging for Clairol's Nice'n'Easy is simple, but not particularly eye-catching. However, all relevant information is easy to find. The top of the box is covered in a picture of hair in the dark brown shade I've picked, the rest of the box being white with a photograph of a model sporting lovely long, shiny Natural Dark Brown hair. There is a small sign telling you that they've added twice the amount of conditioner to the pack as well as Expert Gloves (more on these in a minute) and more wording on the bottom extolling the Natual-Looking Colour and Complete Grey Coverage benefits of the product. It's also made clear that this is a permanent dye. Apparently, the dye also contains Built In Multi Tones - basically meaning that your hair will look even more natural as all hair has some different tones to the main colour in it. I am sceptical about how one dye could produce this look though. The sides of the box are taken up with some blurb on the benefits of choosing Nice'n'Easy, a shade guide so you can see the approximate result of the dye on your current shade of hair (which I think is useless as it doesn't show any difference whether your hair is dark blonde or dark brown) and contact information for Clairol. You'll also find a warning telling you to perform a sensitivity test before you use the product and an ingredient list which is handy if you're allergic to some of the contents. The main reason I bought this was because it's a well-known brand, and wasn't too expensive at Asda - I paid £4.88 but I believe it's about £5.50ish at Boots and other retailers.
INSTRUCTIONS & PRE-TESTING ************************************** Inside the box is a pair of gloves, not the usual plastic ones which don't fit anybody and make doing anything while wearing them awkward in the extreme, but stretchy ones which fit quite well. I do not know whether these are made of latex or not but they feel like it. You also have the colour activating creme, the colour itself, and a little tube of conditioner to use afterwards.
The instructions are very simple - mix a small, equal amount of colour and creme together, replacing the lids on each seperate bottle and apply a bit of the mixture to your arm on the inside of your elbow. Leave it for 24 hours to see if you're allergic to it. Use the rest of the colour mixture to check what the final results on your hair will be by cutting off some of your hair and applying the mixture to it, leaving it for 25 minutes and them washing it off. I personally didn't bother with this, but only because I've used hair colurs before, many times, with no problems.
USING THE PRODUCT - AT LAST! *************************************** For the main process of dyeing your hair, add the whole contents of the colour bottle to the bottle of activating cream, and shake it together until it becomes thick and creamy. The instructions tell you to make sure you take off the bottle's nozzle after doing this because in a sealed bottle, the mixed chemicals could burst - not very reassuring considering you're going to put this stuff on your head! I have to say that it doesn't smell very much - you don't get the chemical-y smell you'd expect, and while I wouldn't describe the fragrance as "nice" it's by no means overpowering.
I'm a complete klutz, especially when it involves hair dye. Being out of practice I thought I'd get the stuff everywhere, but didn't as the creme itself was very thick and didn't drip easily. Be aware that it will not come out of towels etc though, and try not to splash too much.
When applying the colour, make sure you get it all over the hair, right up to the hairline. Many people swear by putting some moisturiser or Vaseline round their hairline and ears to stop your skin getting that "Oh look, I've just dyed my hair" look. I find that this can get onto your hair and stop the colour "taking" properly, I just have a damp flannel to hand and wipe off any that gets on my skin. I've not had any problems with dyed skin!
Funnily enough, the mixed product looks brown in the bottle, but when it gets on my skin it looks navy blue! Don't be put off by this though, your hair will not go blue permanently, and it does help you to see whether you've missed any areas - a helpful friend won't go amiss for the back of your head though.
The colour creme doesn't drip, it's quite thick which makes it very easy to put on, plus there's enough of it to cover all my hair. This is a bonus, I've often had to buy two packs of other brands of colour as my hair is long, but Nice'n'Easy has plenty of the creme to cover all my hair, root to tip.
I usually find that after I've got my hair covered, sticking it up on my head with a big hairclip stops any more colour from getting on my skin while I wait to wash it out. I left it on for the recommended time of 25 minutes. I would probably have left it longer, but my scalp had started to sting, not much, but enough for me to decide it would be best to wash it out now. Recommendations on pack say that for grey hair, 45 minutes may be a better length of time to leave it on, to make sure it's worked properly. If you haven't coloured your hair before, I would do the skin test first, just to make sure you're not allergic to it.
Yet another colour change surprise while washing it out - it's purple now! It won't take too long to wash out, if you're using a showerhead over the side of the bath. Rinse until the water is coming off your hair clear - if you don't, you'll get purple pillows! Apply some of the conditioner, leave it on for a couple of minutes and rinse out.
The conditioner deserves a paragraph to itself. You do not need much - I used a 5p sized blob for my long hair which was plenty. While rinsing it out, I had a nasty feeling that my usually straw-like hair was going to end up greasy. I've used many different conditioners with varying degrees of success, but this one did feel nice on my hair. Once my hair was dried, I was pleasantly surprised to find it had made my hair soft, silky and not at all greasy. The tube looks very small, but considering the small amount you need to use, it lives up to it's claims of having enough to use it several times. Definite thumbs up - just a pity they don't sell the conditioner seperately!
FINAL RESULTS ******************** My hair looked very dark while it was still wet, after rinsing out the colour and conditioning. However, once dry, the colour was much more subtle. It looks natural, without that processed, I've-just-dyed-my hair-can't-you-tell look that I've had before while using other brands of hair dye. I was initially suspicious of the "multi-tonal" claim, and while my hair doesn't have obvious highlights or lowlights, it doesn't look as flat as some colourants can make hair look. Also, despite having dry hair anyway, my hair doesn't feel damaged, how much of that is down to the conditioner and how much is down to the colourant itself I'm not sure. I'm so happy with the overall result that I keep looking at it in mirrors!
Suffice it to say, I am very pleased with the results of this, and would definitely recommend it if you're considering colouring your hair.

Advantages: price, easy to apply Disadvantages: contains harsh chemicals, may look a bit 'fake'
...this reason, I chose the Clairol nice n easy range. The image of this brand, like most others, is one of care and nourishment so I thought I might as well give it a go.
This product promises Long-lasting, beautiful colour full of depth, dimension and shine working with your tones and highlights for the most natural colour for you.
==The range==
The nice n easy range has by far the most diverse collection of shades, so there is bound to be something ... ...colours to name them all, but as an example, colours I have used in the past include 102 ash blonde, 101 baby blonde and 106 medium ash blonde. Just look at my profile picture to see the type of shade this produces. A box of the hair dye costs around £4.75, which is about average compared to other brands. It retails in almost all chemists and supermarkets and is quite often part of a buy one get one free promotion. There are three levels of hair ...

...against.
I haven't tried a Clairol Nice and Easy for years and as I looked along the available colours I saw one called golden brown. I have light brown hair with more that its fair share of grey, in fact to be truthful underneath near the roots my hair is white.
I feel that you have to be very careful with your choice of hair colour as you reach a certain age, its no good flinging yourself headlong into the fashionable vibrant colour range. The ... ...what so ever.
The Clairol Nice and Easy does have the strength to cover grey hair and it does leave the hair looking natural. The semi-permanent colour will last approximately 24 washes and costs around £4.
The whole process is quick and easy, make sure that you use an old towel as the colourant stains the towel. I didn't find that the colour stained my skin and I had no irritation at all.
Depending on your hair you may not have to leave the colorant ...

Advantages: Does exactly what it says on the packet Disadvantages: Make sure you follow the instructions properly
...across a magazine advertisement for Clairol - "Make the most of your natural beauty" it said - I was hooked! But even so - Clairol produce five different products. I read through their descriptions and really was none the wiser but then I noticed at the bottom - "For personalised hair colour advice call a Clairol consultant". So I did.
I explained my predicament - or a shortened version of it. The consultant asked lots of sensible questions, explained ... ...- if in doubt the Clairol consultant recommended choosing a lighter colour as it is then easier to make it darker if you require.
There are so many chemicals listed on the side of the box that they had to continue the list on the bottom of the box - I didn't look too closely - there are some things a girl doesn't need to know!
**Instructions**
The four page instructions are in English and Dutch and very clearly laid out. The first thing they recommend ...

Advantages: covers grey well, leaves hair shiny, easy to use, can apply to dry hair (less mess!) Disadvantages: smells disgusting, looks disgusting
I've got 40 minutes to kill on Ciao at the moment, cos my hair is piled up on top of my head, and I have the oldest towel I could find draped around my shoulders. Since I realised last week that I'm going so grey that I really need to do something about it, I checked Ciao (as you do) to see what the top hair colourants were, and Clairol's Nice and Easy came out at number 2 (pretty good recommendation I'd say) and cost me only £5.69. Price was probably ... ...to claim my soft toy at Boots, and so even though this is often available on special offer for less, I paid the full 5.69 and got a cuddly dolphin thrown in. (they were all out of moles.) The shade I picked is called 141 deep natural medium brown (which is pretty much my original hair colour, minus the grey.) But the bit that really caught my eye was the "Extra Grey Coverage Formula". Hurrah! Bye bye prematurely aging granny lookalike, hello Catherine ...

Advantages: easy to use, good results Disadvantages: none for me
...and my favourite brand is Clairol Nice ‘n’ Easy. These days I tend to go for the subtle shades and I am at the age where the grey hairs are starting to appear so I like to keep these well covered. I don’t usually pay the full price of £5.69 as I wait until it is on special offer in Boots and I bought it last week for £3.79. Boots usually have a good choice of colours in Blonde, Red, Brunette and Black. Each box on display shows ... ...shade. So it is easy to see what the colour is likely to be. Each colour is clearly marked on the front and the top of the box with the name of the shade and a number. This is ideal if you want to use the same colour again as you can either write the name and number down or keep the top of the box.
The box also shows you what colour hair the shade is suitable for and gives a picture showing the before and after colour results. It gives a brief description ...

Advantages: Fairly easy to apply, covers roots well Disadvantages: Stains scalp, not enough of it, stains more than the average, slight burning feeling
Advantages: Quick and easy, little mess Disadvantages: The price
I'm not quite forty, but for a good few years now, I've struggled with grey hair, particularly around my temples and parting, and need to colour it on a regular basis - I estimate that my hair is 40% grey now. There was a time when I was better off and could afford to have it coloured at the hairdresser's, but those days are now gone and I rely on home hair dye kits. ClairolNice 'nEasy is my preference, although I have experimented with one or two others on the market.
My hair is long, past shoulder length, and takes quite a lot of colouring. I am also concerned with the beating it must give my hair - it usually looks nicely conditioned after colouring, but the ends do seem to dry out quickly. I therefore like to use a root touch-up in between colours, just to take the stress off the ends of my hair without having to put up ...
Advantages: Covers grey, adequate blending of colour. Disadvantages: Not enough mixture for all of roots & V expensive
Now that I'm in my late 30s and my hair grows so blooming quickly my ever increasing grey hair is showing through at a frightening rate of approx 3-4 weeks.
I have been colouring my hair at home now for almost a year, saving a whopping £40+ per colour at the hairdressers once a month.
Given that it?s actually only the roots that really need doing so frequently so I thought I would Clairol ?Nice ?nEasy? Root Touch Up a go.
Clairol produce 12 colouring blending shades for root touch-up and it can be quite baffling when faced with them all but the box does have a Colour Result Guide on the side of it to show what result to expect depending upon your existing hair colour, a great help to us amateurs.
What I think is particularly good is that it gives you ?matches? with other brands:
