My hair is under attack from a number of sources (mainly all my fault) from pollution, over-straightening and colouring. After about 4 years of dying my hair, I decided it was time to start looking after it. For this reason, I chose the Clairol nice n easy range. The image of this brand, like most others, is one of care and nourishment so I thought I might as well give it a go.

This product promises Long-lasting, beautiful colour full of depth, dimension and shine working with your tones and highlights for the most natural colour for you.

The range

The nice n easy range has by far the most diverse collection of shades, so there is bound to be something to suit an individual's needs. There are far to many colours to name them all, but as an example, colours I have used in the past include 102 ash blonde, 101 baby blonde and 106 medium ash blonde. Just look at my profile picture to see the type of shade this produces. A box of the hair dye costs around £4.75, which is about average compared to other brands. It retails in almost all chemists and supermarkets and is quite often part of a buy one get one free promotion.

There are three levels of hair colourant in this range. Level 1 colour lasts for 6-8 shampoos, enhances your natural tones, but cannot lighten your natural colour. Level 2 colour lasts for 24 shampoos and can cover up to 100% of greys. Level 3 colour is permanent, covers 100% grey completely, and can lighten your natural colour. I would advise that if you are new to hair colouring, start off with the level 1 colour to give you an impression of what it would look like, rather than starting with level 3 and being stuck with the wrong colour.

As a new addition to the range, it is now possible to purchase a root touch up for when you are in between colourings. This retails at around the £4.29 mark, which is almost as expensive as the dye itself. In my experience, it is not worth spending that much money on a root touch up as the results aren't that excellent and it is obvious where you have gone over your roots. The root touch ups aren't available in as many shades as the hair colourant; one colour seems to cover a lot of shades within that tone. (If that makes any sense at all!)

Packaging

The top of the box is an image of what your chosen shade should look like and which end of the scale it lies. Shades are categorised as either warm, neutral or cool. On one side of the box is a chart showing the expected colour result in relation to your natural tones. I find this quite accurate, so it is probably a good place to look if it is your first time dying your hair. The level of the dye is written clearly across the box so there is no way you could make any mistakes.

There is an ingredients list which, as I always say is very useful if you happen to be allergic to any of the contents, but you should perform the allergy test before anyway.

Application

Included in the box is colour activating crème, colour, colourseal gloss and gloves. Before starting, it is a good idea to read the safety information and perform a strand test to see if you have any allergic reactions to the dye. It is a good idea to put a line of moisturiser around your hairline before you start dying you hair. This dye contains some pretty harsh chemicals which can leave stains on the skin that are difficult to remove - you have been warned!

To start dying your hair, you need to mix the colour with the colour activating crème in a bottle which has a handy nozzle at one end. This makes the process so much easier as you can reach every strand of hair from root to tip. Once your whole hair is covered, the resulting colour is usually a varying shade of purple, but don't let this put you off. The shade I use starts off as a purple colour and I always think I've made a mistake, but it washes out to reveal the shade I require.

The time left for the colour to develop depends on the condition of your hair, but if you are covering greys you will need to cover your roots first and then the rest of your hair for a further 20 minutes. If you are dying the whole of your hair, you will need to leave the colour 25 minutes to develop.

After the development time, just rinse your hair as you normally would after washing, then apply the Colourseal gloss. Colourseal gloss preserves colour appearance and helps prevent colour from fading. It is specifically designed for the three shades of blonde, brunette and red hair and contains 6 installments. I have found this conditioner very helpful in preventing my colour from fading and find it easy to use a small amount every week for 6 weeks.

Another bit of advice is that if you have especially long hair, it may be a good idea to use two bottles of hair dye rather than one.

Results

This colourant definitely lives up to its promises as all the shades I've used blend perfectly with my natural tones and haven't given any unexpected results. The multi-tonal aspect of this hair dye is brilliant as it gives me high and low lights in the right places without looking ridiculous.

I have become so impressed with this product that it is now the only hair colourant that I will use. The colour is as vibrant on the 60th day after application as it was on the first. My only problem is that my hair grows so fast that the roots start to show through after about 3 weeks, but that's more of a personal thing. My hair is really dry, but I have found that this hair dye is very nourishing and my hair is actually more manageable after use rather than damaged. I can't really comment on the grey coverage for obvious reasons, but I have heard positive remarks from older members of my family. Overall, I am extremely impressed with this product as it leaves my hair in good condition - even after repeated use.

My only negative comment about this product is that it can look a little fake when you have just applied it. However, this effect fades after you wash your hair for the first time after dying, so it's nothing to really complain about.
