Although I love the summer and look forward to the balmy sunny days, I am not one for sunbathing for long periods unless on holiday. I normally spend my days in the sun either gardening, playing with the kids or generally mooching about on long walks or bike rides, so by the time it comes for our annual trip abroad I seem to have the pale and interesting look and not the sun bronzed appearance I would so much like to have without having to be a sun worshipper. A few weeks ago saw a little white envelope landing on my doormat and inside was a wedding invitation to some good friends of ours and this wedding is due to take place before we go on our holiday, and therefore I wouldn’t be bronzed by this time so I decided a quick fix would be necessary. I didn’t want to upstage the bride with my white skin so I hit the shops to search for a tanning lotion and to be honest I was in awe of the vast array of tanning products on the market.
I was in Debenhams and I happened to pass by the Clarins counter and I noticed the sales assistant had a gorgeous glow about her, as well as a mountain of make up and lip gloss, but none the less, she certainly looked healthy and sun kissed. She asked if I was ok looking or if I needed some help and I mentioned that I was looking for a good quality product, having used other tanning products in the past and ending up looking like streaky bacon, I was a bit green when it came to choosing something. She then proceeded to ask how subtle or dark I wanted to be and I told her that the colour she was would be plenty – not over the top, but natural looking. Of course I said to her that she’d probably got hers from being somewhere exotic, but instead she told me that hers was out of a bottle too and that the one she was wearing was none other than Clarins own self-tanning milk. I was quite impressed as her tan looked so natural and nothing like what I remember applying a few years ago. There were no signs of streaking, and the colour was not too in your face either. My fear of applying fake tan is that I may end up looking like Kat Slater a la Eastenders and that’s not a very flattering look, but the girl behind the counter certainly didn’t have that appearance, so I decided to give the product a whirl myself.
As I had a few stray gift vouchers in my purse I thought this was an ideal chance to treat myself while getting rid of those pesky things that I always save for a rainy day. Clarins Self Tanning Milk set me back £14 for a 125ml tube of golden elixir.
In return of my £14 the sales assistant handed me a pretty golden/bronze box decorated in the infamous Clarins logo with a little sun with a 6 in the middle of it. This 6 plays quite a big role and explains to the consumer that the tanning lotion has built sun protection of SPF6. As well as giving your skin a subtle colour lift, it is protecting it at the same time, so another good reason to buy.
Inside the box you will find a good-sized tube (approximately 5” in height), which is also that lovely golden bronze colour and again is covered in the same product advertising. There is a nice flip top cap that is ideal for opening and closing with little mess to be made and also when you come to store it in a cupboard for use at a later date, you can sit the tube on its lid and the contents will be easier to squeeze out as the product will already be at the top.
Included with the tanning lotion is the all-important piece of paper, which will help you on your way to achieving sun kissed skin – the instructions. At first appearance the leaflet looks like it goes on forever and that the process is over-complicated, but at closer inspection I see that there is only a small section to gloss over. The rest of the leaflet is written in other languages so there’s not too much to read beforehand. Great news for someone like me who hates wasting loads of time reading instructions, I want to get straight into action.
With all self-tanning products, the normal rule of thumb is to prepare your skin before hand so that it is in tiptop condition for the application. I decided to apply the tanning milk the following morning after a long soak in the bath and an exfoliating session to rid my skin of all dry skin, which would become unsightly once the tanning milk was applied. Once satisfied that I was ready for my new colour transformation I began to massage in the milk, which in fact isn’t like milk in consistency, but more a cream. This creamy ‘milk’ has virtually no smell to it, not like those nasty tanning lotions I remember my sister using way back in yesteryear. Good news if you want to use a product that doesn’t clash with your favourite perfume. Remember though to wait a couple of hours before spraying scent onto your skin incase it reacts with the tanning milk – this could affect the results, or worst still play havoc with your skin.
The instructions do recommend applying the night before to give the tanning product time to develop properly without having to worrying about sweating or wanting to have a bath or shower. Because I had already had a bath, this wasn’t a problem for me, so I was quite happy to apply the tanning milk now. The tanning milk was very easy to apply and went on like a dream. It glides over the skin nicely and doesn’t feel at all sticky as it dries in. I wanted to apply it to my whole body so that I was the same colour all over, and it was lucky that my husband was at hand to assist me as there was no way I would be able to reach my back and beyond and make sure the tanning milk was evenly applied. After the tanning milk has been applied, you are able to get dressed immediately without the worry of any product staining your clothes.
The only problem I had when applying the tanning milk was that it was hard to tell where you had applied the cream, as there are no distinguishing marks. The cream doesn’t colour your skin on impact, so it’s all too easy to re-apply over the same areas or worst still miss bits out meaning that you could be left with a white patch here and there. However, I still managed to achieve near perfect results the first time I used the tanning milk and by the time I came to use it again, I was almost a professional and had mastered the technique well without missing any bits of skin. I would state however that there are a few problem areas that need to be given a bit more attention. In particular the elbows, and knees as these bend and the skin appears to be a bit tougher. These areas are usually the biggest blabbermouths when it comes to using fake tan seems to stand out more here and unless you apply the correct amount without overdoing it, you will give your secret away. The best advice I can give, and I’ve learnt this from experience is to apply a little bit less here, and wipe off any excess so that the colour blends in with the rest of the body.
It is suggested that once you have applied the tanning milk, you wait for at least two hours to see the finished results. Once the time has elapsed your skin will have a subtle sun kissed glow about it, which I like, but then other people might prefer a deeper tan. This is why it’s best to wait the suggested two hours as the colour darkens as the time wears on and if you apply another layer of tanning milk before this you won’t achieve the best results. Remember girls (and guys, of course) that patience is a virtue. Once you’re happy at your level of tan you’ll be pleased to hear that your new glow will last up to a week. Your colour will lighten gradually as the days pass and doesn’t just disappear overnight. You can re-apply every couple of days instead of having to wait a week for the tan to disappear. This way you will look fresh faced all the time. What I love the most about this tanning milk is that it doesn’t have an orange tint to it at all. You won’t be hitting the crowds looking like you’ve been tangoed, but you will get a lot of admiring glances and comments from well to do people.
Normally I can look pasty around the face, but thanks to Clarins Tanning Milk, I look like I’ve been brought back to life and I look much healthier as a consequence without looking like an extra from a Del Monte advert. While some people would probably prefer to have a deeper tan, I quite like a more subtle approach such as this. You can always apply a second layer if you wish, which I find more preferable than wishing you could take off some of the colour if it’s too much.
You can buy Clarins Tanning Milk from a wide range of department stores and chemists and can be bought in the region of £14 or sometimes they can be purchased during a promotion where you can get this free with another Clarins product. Also, you can buy online from various online stores and the prices vary depending on where you browse. One place I would recommend is Ebay as you can quite often pick this up from here and pay as little as £5. A bargain not to be sniffed at.

The box is mainly a bright orange/gold colour. At the top is the Clarins Paris logo. Followed by Lait Auto-Bronzant. Then you see a sun with SPF 6 in the middle. Clarins Self-Tanning Milk with Sun Protection comes in 125ml for the price of £14.00. It is available from Clarins stockists, and good chemists. So seeing as I have now got the tube beside me, I might as well start NOW.
I will say that I have given it a good overall rating, as I do think that the intensity of the tan could be a little deeper. I have used a wash off make-up tan to my skin when going out, just to add that little bit ...

...selecting a fake tan. Clarins obviously agreed as they have now changed the packaging to a more appropriate milk-chocolate brown colour.
But anyway, that evening I exfoliated and moisturised my face (I read somewhere to skip the toning stage). The product comes out more like a cream consistency rather than milk, but I think that makes it easier to apply.
I squeezed out a decent blob of it into my palm before applying it in sections to my face and ... ...my own tube of the Clarins milk and now use it on my face and neck regularly. Advantages: Subtle natural looking tan. Disadvantages: Can't tell if you have applied cream everywhere.
...had heard good reports about Clarins Self-tanning milk so I gave it a whirl....... and was extemely pleased with the result.
Rather than give you a definite brown tan, the milk seems to give you a healthy glow. It isn't until you compare bits you haven't applied the milk to that you see a slight change in colour. Consequently the tan looks very natural and healthy. One application was perfect for the subtle natural effect that I wanted. However, ... ...re-apply the milk again. It is best to wait for two hours to see the result of the first application though and then decide if more applications are needed.
The milk costs £14.00 for a 125ml tube - I have used it three times on my upper half including face and there is still more than half a tube left.
The packaging is a nice bright yellow colour. The tube has a flip lid and comes in a box with instructions on how to use the milk.
The tanning ...

This means that while you are waiting for the tan to develop, you are still somewhat protected from the sun's rays. However, if you are fair skinned I suggest you use a higher factor. I can recommend this product, the tan isn't a dark brown but you can top it up every few days until you turn the colour you desire. If you're feeling particularly pale, give Clarins a try. You will like! ...

Advantages: gives great sun kissed glow but natural Disadvantages: none
I've used this self tan for years on my face in spring/summer instead of foundation. It just gives a natural healthy glow, and if you then add a tiny bit more on your cheeks, it acts as blusher also. Then instead of foundation going graesy on your skin in the sun, you just have a natural look. I reapply it about every week.
The tube has lasted several years, down to last squirt now.It may be a bit more expensive than some others but its worth it, ... ...it deteriorating.
It is subtle but effective and easy to use. I'm off to buy another.
I have tried others in the past, but none as good as this in my opinion. Highly recommended if you want a subtle glow. If you wanted a really dark tan, may be not for you. ...

Advantages: Not tested on animals, gives a nice glow Disadvantages: Expensive, not tinted, no sun protection
I found this selftan gel really easy to apply and it didn?t streak. It didn?t give me the golden tan I was hoping for but it did give me a nice glow ? then again I have yet to find the selftan that will give me the tan I am hoping for (I am fair skinned).
This gel smells really fresh and clean. It goes on nicely, isn?t oily and makes my skin nice and soft as it is quite moisturising. It absorbs very well into the skin and I haven?t had any nasty stains appearing on clothes or bedclothes. Although it is a gel it is more like a creamy lotion. It doesn?t have any added sunprotection, which I think the Clarinsselftanmilk does and for the money I think it should! It also is not tinted so I can't see where I've put it, but I find if I make sure I rub it in really well I usually have an even glow within about 6 hours.
