I first tried this product last year. I was about to go on holiday and like many other people you don’t want to go looking like you have just had the fright of your life. The girl at the Clarins counter, suggested that I might like to try this product. Seeing as I am always ready to try new things, I said to her “I will take one”
The box is mainly a bright orange/gold colour. At the top is the Clarins Paris logo. Followed by Lait Auto-Bronzant. Then you see a sun with SPF 6 in the middle. For those who speak English there is the description of Self Tanning Milk with Sun Protection clearly printed below. The other three sides of the box tell people about this product in five languages, luckily one is in English.
Inside the box you will find a tube of the milk and also a leaflet telling you about
the product and also what else you can buy in this range. The leaflet does look like you will receive a lot of information, but just like the box there is only one section printed in English.
The tube itself stands just over 5 inches tall or 145mm. The front is exactly the same as the box front. The back has a little paragraph in English with little notes about the product. The top/lid of the tube is flat thus enabling it to stand up for storage.
When you flip open the lid, you are met with a mild nearly odourless smell. There is not the usual false/fake tan smell. To me though, I don’t really think that this is a milk, as it is slightly thicker than milk, more like a cream.
Before you apply this, like any other self-tanning cream, you have to prepare your skin to get the proper desired effect. If you have dry skin, then apply a body lotion to your skin and do concentrate on areas like your knees, ankles, feet and elbows. If your face is dry rub some on also.
Why do we need to do this? All self-tanners work by dying the outmost layers of the skin be it only semi-permanently. So the smoother you can make your skin, your tan will be more even and natural looking in appearance. It is best if you can do this the day before you plan to use this product.
2. Warm all self-tanning products except the spray.
This can be done by rubbing the bottle or tube in your hands. Why on earth should we do this you may be asking? It makes it easier for you to apply it on your skin. When it comes to the application I always use a pair of latex gloves (I buy mine from the wholesalers but they can be bought at a chemist) I find these better than rubber gloves as they are thinner and allow you to control and feel how the application is being done. The gloves are used to protect your nails and hands, as this is the first big giveaway that your tan is not real.
3. Application to the face.
Always begin in the middle of your face and make sure that your hands are flat against your skin. Start gently moving outwards, concentrating on your cheeks, nose and forehead, really any area of your face that always catches the sun. Avoid the contour area of your eyes and especially your eyebrows. Also avoid your hairline. If you do manage to get the milk onto these areas, the milk can be removed by a little piece of damp cotton wool.
4. Application to the body.
Begin at the feet and use large continuous sweeping movements, work up towards your thighs. The hard bit is trying not to go over the same area twice. In time you do get used to putting this milk or any other lotion on to your body. Any excess just use a damp flannel, make sure to remove excess from your heels knees, knuckles and elbows, as once again, this is the tell-tale signs of false tan.
I personally only use this on my face, neck and shoulders, as it only comes in 125ml/4.4oz. It will last you longer seeing as it costs £14.00.
What I like about this product is that it has a SPF 6 built into the milk. So not only are you protected in the sun, in two hours your ‘false’ tan has had time to develop. The milk has UVB and UVA filters built into it, which provide sun protection. Also there are ingredients like Aloe (which moisturises), Silver Birch (Astringent, Repairs and Protects), Sesame (Moisturises, Regenerates and Nourishes) and Ayapana (Protects)
After the two hours from your first application, I do it again, to make the tan a little deeper. Then I top up every other day, at the most every three days. Once a week I again exfoliate and this helps the appearance of your skin.
I do like this product as if applied in the right method, it is a natural even looking tan.
Here are just a few little facts about tanning and the sun.
UVA.
These are rays that the sun emits. They speed up ageing, and damage your skins elasticity. They also increase the long-term risk of skin cancer.
UVB
These are ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun. These cause the skin to go red, sting and burn.
SPF.
Sun Protection Factor, this ranges from 2 to 60. What it means is the length of time you can spend in the sun, without getting burnt. The higher the number, the more protection you are getting.
So let me recap.
Clarins Self-Tanning Milk with Sun Protection comes in 125ml for the price of £14.00. It is available from Clarins stockists, and good chemists. So seeing as I have now got the tube beside me, I might as well start NOW.
I will say that I have given it a good overall rating, as I do think that the intensity of the tan could be a little deeper. I have used a wash offmake-up tan to my skin when going out, just to add that little bit more ;o)
