Contrary to what most people would assume, my favourite music magazine is ‘Classic Rock’. The monthly publication, based in the UK has been active since 1998 and is focused upon all forms of Rock music through from the ‘60s right up to the early nineties in order to ensure that those who made an impact and would in the future be considered ‘classic’ (such as Guns ‘N’ Roses) are all included alongside the pioneers. Metal, Psychedelic Rock, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Garage Rock, Grunge, Progressive Rock are all covered here along with many others, it does all possible to draw in a range of audiences with a ... more

Advantages Advantages An excellent magazine from cover to cover

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

Although the title may suggest that it covers only the more mature acts that have dominated the rock genre, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, there’s a wealth of very well researched articles that relate to a variety of successful (past and present) guitar based acts. I mean, sure, the long established bands (most of which we all know and love) are indeed often featured, but so are our future generations’ potential ‘classic’ acts. Personally, I tend to be more into our treasured bands of yesteryear, some of which have long since split, but I deeply enjoy reading the interviews ... more

Advantages Advantages Great photos, interviews, and very informative.

Disadvantages Disadvantages A bit pricey in the US.

To put it lightly, this magazine is the greatest rock authority in it's genre. Most good rock magazines come from the UK, in my opinion. The thing is it is a bit pricey here in thre US by magazine standards. At $8.99(standard price in all US), I only by it when an artist or article that interest me is in it's cover. A national magazine like this would probably cost $7 here. My favorite artists range from Zeppelin, Rush, VanHalen, Smashing Pumpkins, Pink Floyd, etc. This October issue had Rush, Zeppelin, VH, a blurb about the Pumpkins, and I'm still looking for Pink! The information about Rush ... more

Advantages Advantages New and old bands

I have not been a regular buyer of rock magazines since my late teens. I first bought Classic rock as I wanted to hear a couple of tracks on the cover CD. The CD was excellent and the content of the magazine took me back a few years. I was hooked immediately and sent for my subscription within a few days of buying my first issue. I have since received 5 issues and have enjoyed them all. The CD's overall are an excellent mix of old and new and the articles within the magazine the same. I have been introduced to many new bands and have also been made aware of new releases from some old bands who ... more

Advantages Advantages Something for the purist.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

Old school influenced rock fans do not have much to choose from when it comes to music magazines. If you are into the modern day trends of thrash and black metal (have I got the names right?) then you have the long 'Kerrang' and 'Metal Hammer'. They are not your cup of tea however if the music you enjoy is essentially based around the period 1970-75 and the music those artists created subsequently. Kerrang started that way but quickly took the speed metal and overtly heavy approach. In the seventies there was Sounds, NME & Melody Maker to keep the fans happy. Sadly two of the three folded and ... more
