Yo, Ho, Ho and a bottle of rum!

Advantages: Exciting, Chilling and great for both boys and girls.
Disadvantages: Murder Scenes (bear in mind for young or sensitive children)

...comes across a map of Treasure Island in a pirate's chest. He embarks on an adventure of a lifetime in pursuit of treasure with the well respected but foolish and greedy Dr Livesey and Squire Trelawney who mistakenly hire a crew of violent, drunken pirates. Expect adventure, excitement, murder, mutiny and betrayal in this timeless book written for boys ( but as I'm proof, loved by girls too!) OTHER FACTS- The story of Treasure Island has greatly ...
...who in Treasure Island created the idea of 'X' marks the spot on treasure maps. He created the image of a peg-legged pirate with a parrot on his shoulder (Long John Silver) and the term 'dead mans chest' among other things. The story has inspired many films and books, including the Muppets adaptation aswell as Disney's 'Treasure Planet' and Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest. ...

Advantages: Very desriptive and emotional writing
Disadvantages: Some of his character names

...is his second novel. Scooter Reilly is a young child in 1960s New York, inheriting his unfortunate name from the former Yankees player Phil "Scooter" Rizzuto. It's a time of historical change for the country and a major change in the Bronx where Scooter and his family live. It's a time of great change for Scooter himself, as when he is four his grandfather has a nasty accident that costs him an eye. Soon after, his father and grandfather become estranged ...
...steals from Scooter first his baseball playing dreams and then, after another nasty accident, his ability to walk properly. As if his name wasn't enough to cope with, Scooter's life never seems to take the easy path. He finally finds someone who can love him, but first his mother and then her brother comes between them. He is frequently in fights, some of which he wins, but mostly not. His only solace is the grandfather he is forbidden to visit, ...

Of Mice and Men

Advantages: Very moving
Disadvantages: none

...upon year. The overall premise of the novella is that no matter how much one plans, hopes an dreams, sometimes fate is against us. Using a line from a Robert Burn's poem, Steinbeck uses the image of mice and men being two entirely different creatures in terms of size and strength, however, they are actually similar in terms of wanting a life which is comfortable and full of promise. This is the case for George and Lennie, the two protagonists who ...
...course of the novella, Steinbeck really drives home questions of the 'attainability' of this dream. Through effective characterisation and themes as relevant in now as they were in 1937, Steinbeck has created a classic novel so imbedded in pop culture. If you are looking for something to read in one day and one which reveals life in all its harsh reality, then look no further than "Of Mice and Men". ...

Vikings, pirates, adventures and mystery all in one book.

Advantages: A really good old book - a forgotten classic
Disadvantages: Quite a long book at 522 pages

THE PIRATE SIR WALTER SCOTT “THAT long, narrow, and irregular island, usually called the Mainland of Zetland, because it is by far the largest of that Archipelago, terminates, as is well known to the mariners who navigate the stormy seas which surround the Thule of the ancients, in a cliff of immense height, entitled Sumburgh-Head, which presents its bare scalp and naked sides to the weight of a tremendous surge, forming ...
...The work of the prolific Scottish writer, Sir Walter Scott, is sadly no longer thought of as fashionable to read. Ask people what he wrote, and the most popular answer I am sure would be ‘Ivanhoe’, ‘Rob Roy’ or perhaps ‘The Lady of the Lake’. ’Ivanhoe’, like ‘Rob Roy’ were part of Scott’s Waverley Novels as was one of my favourite books by him, and the one I am reviewing here, The Pirate’; this book was seventh in the series and was published in ...

Give me Moore, any day!

Advantages: attractive, plot, characters
Disadvantages: /

The latest book to head my way is none other than 'RSPV', written by author Tara Moore. Now when I first saw the book I had no idea what it was going to be like. I had never heard of Tara Moore before so her style was going to be completely new to me. However, the cover of the book itself is incredibly attractive. All we see is the neck and lower face of a woman, with a large glittering necklace around her neck. Now for ages I thought this read 'RSUP', ...
...about the author before reading did I realise that this necklace actually read 'RSVP'. With that embarrassment out of the way, I was truly looking forward to reading. The book tells the story of fiancées Rossa Granville and Ashling Morrison. Happily in love and planning their wedding, a problem arises almost instantly. First of all, Rossa's family seem to be taking over the whole event. And to make matters worse, Ashling's mother, Coppelia Morrison, ...
