a review on the novel pride and prejudice.
Advantages: a gripping storyline Disadvantages: quite long
...Jane Austen's most popular novel, Pride and Prejudice. And, of course, a single woman in search of a good fortune must equally be in want of a husband who has one! The difficulty for the Bennet sisters -- lovely, sweet-tempered Jane; beautiful, headstrong, intelligent Elizabeth (Lizzie); plain, bookish Mary; Kitty, who slavishly follows the lead of the youngest, the empty-headed and man-hungry Lydia -- is that because they have no brother their father's ... ...Collins, and they will be left with very little to live on. Solution: at least one of them "must marry VERY well" -- meaning, marry money. Enter a new neighbor, Mr. Bingley, a wealthy young man who takes a house in the neighborhood. The dithering, laughable Mrs. Bennet immediately selects him for Jane, and the young people oblige her by showing affection for each other. But Bingley's friend, Mr. Darcy, persuades the somewhat weak Bingley that Jane ...

Persuasion
Advantages: Character developement on the level of Anne is compelling Disadvantages: Character and story developement elsewhere is lacking
Persuasion is indeed a fantastic book, but as one of her later novels it lacks the emotions and detail to the story that earlier novels such as Pride and Prejudice have had. Anne, the stories heroine is developed thoroughly throughout the novel and the other charaters are seen as important depending on their situation and effect on Anne. Anne is, as Jane Austen herself perfect "A heroine too perfect even for me." Unlike in other novels Anne does ... ...as has her hero, she continues to maintain that she was in the right over the situation with Captain Wentworth when he first asked her to marry him. Compelling and Romantic as this book is, i think it lacks the story that other books of hers have, The situation with the evil cousin Mr Elliot and Mrs Clay is never described in as much depth as it should be, it is simply passed by, when both of them seem to be very much in the wrong. The character ...

For die-hard fans only
Advantages: for a true austin fan you need completeness! Disadvantages: a fragment and a juvenillia
...of the back Lady Susan is a 'juvenillia' - a minor work by the immature Austin. It is written in the form of letters between the major charactors, a popular device at the time and I believe how PnP was originally conceived. However as Austin seems to have realised this does place a certain amount of constraint on the possibilities of plot as it relies on at least 2 charactors at all times being only able to communicate by letter, but not prevented ... ...and in the character of Lady Susan you can see, perhaps a forrunner of Emma. The plot itself is fairly conventional but what makes it stand out is that most of the letters, and hence view point, are written by Lady Susan the 'villan' of the piece.
The Whartons is merely a fragment a couple of chapters long, incomplete at the time of Austin's death. It certainly seems to have had the potential to rival the rest of her work, but because of this it ...

NORTHANGER ABBEY
JANE AUSTEN
Think of Jane Austin and thoughts like 'women's book' and 'A level book' spring to mind. Recent period dramas on TV and films have made the stories of Jane Austin a lot more popular - but for me Northanger Abbey has always been my favourite. The book was written when Jane Austen was in her late teens or early 20s, It was finished in 1803 but wasn't published for another 13 years - by which time the author ... ...of my school work while Northanger Abbey was read for pleasure. The novel tells the story of Catherine Morland, the very ideal of a 'nice' girl; but this naïve heroine is also in possession of an overactive imagination, fueled by her obsession with gothic novels. When Catherine meets Henry Tilney, she's instantly smitten; but when she's invited to his home, the sinister Northanger Abbey, she learns not to interpret the world through the pages of ...

One of the great classics
Advantages: clearly written, wonderful characters Disadvantages: a little unbelievable
Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice was my introduction to the so called Classics. Having studied a few Dickens at school, I wasn't really that impressed, but a chance purchase of this book changed my mind. A classic romantic novel, Mr Darcy meets Elizabeth Bennett and begins to fall in love. However, she dislikes him, allowing herself to be influenced by how others think of him, and by some out right falsehoods from a friend. When she rejects his ... ...sisters actions threaten to bring disgrace to the whole family... I wont spoil the rest!
If you have seen the BBC version, or seen the film, then you should definately read this book, so much is missed out, it really is worth the effort. Elizabeth Bennett is a brilliant character, and in many ways Austen was far ahead of her time, creating a character who knows her own mind, and won't simply go along with what others would have her do if it doesnt ...
