Who needs a passport? a passepartout please!
Review of Around the World in 80 Days - Jules Verne by
kazz42
Advantages: Very easy to read
Disadvantages: perhaps a bit too short!
...local that he can go around the world in 80 days and he leaves the next morning!
The journey across the continents is well described and although the obstacles he meets on his way are seem obvious the solutions around them are not! I was gripped by the story and my poor children 13 months and 32 months have been forced to watch Postman Pat a bit more than they would have liked!! I did manage to get to the end in two days and I thought the ending ... ...almost disappointed when the story ended.
I found the book very easy to read even though we have been suffering from sleepless nights with a teething baby! It is very well written and contains a surprising amount of detail for such a short book. I would think it would be easily read by anyone over 10 . Some of it would probably be more understood by adults (a bit like the simpsons!!!!)
I loved the character of Phileas Fogg, the old fashioned English ...

A story by John Steinbeck of friendship between 2 migrant ranch workers who have nobody but eachother, fighting to survive in great depression era California. Out on their own after having to leave their last home due to the accident proneness of Lennie Small, who, though extremely strong, has no way to control it, due to having a mental age of a young child.
It is up to George, a quick witted ... ...for work for them to be able to live and eat. An apparent change of luck finds them with work and a roof over their heads but unfortunate events causes their luck to run out.

The Heights of Literature
Review of Wuthering heights - Emily Bronte by
kamallan
Advantages: A classic novel that impress peole with your variety of reading materials
Disadvantages: a slightly contrived ending
...I didn't read the classic Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte until just the other day. I had read Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre and fell in love at once with Mr Rochester, all of the Austen novels, falling in love at once with Mr Darcy and many of the other Victorian type novels, mostly for pleasure but with the mind that they would help for comparison of texts of the era when I sat the dreaded exam for the worst book I have ever read, Tess of the ... ...by a woman) Bronte released Wuthering Heights to the public. Originally beginning in the first person of a Mr Lockwood, a visitor to the area, we truly believe that a gentleman is taking us through his first impressions of Wuthering Heights and the strange gloominess that fills the household. This however soon changes, Mrs Dean, the housekeeper of the Grange, takes over the narration and tells our weary traveller of the happenings at the house before ...

A stunning story, several intriguing philosphies.
Review of The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde by
leo18z
Advantages: Highy insightful, wonderfully written.
Disadvantages: A couple of parts less easy to absorb than others.
...simple must read becasue of the many themes still as relevent, and in many cases more so today.
The one common issue addressed by the author is one that horrifies, bemuses, scares all of us: ageing. Wilde has created one of the most striking allegories of literature which cleverly displays the subtle workings of human growth: the fact that beauty is lost but wisdom is gained. Stop this and what happens?
Whilst it is not a work in which the roundness ... ...upon, Wilde has given us delightful insight of humanity, and some very interesting views upon society: albeit coloured mostly by the cynacism of one charcter.
A book that can be adored, and at the very least one that should be added to any readers collection. (Particulary for any artist.) ...

The expectations of a gentleman
Review of Great Expectations - Charles Dickens by
Kulsum
Advantages: Interesting twists and turns in the plot
Disadvantages: Difficult to get into
...for the next chapter.
Great Expectations: This was written in 1861, and has become known as one of the best novels of Dickens, with its strong characters such as Miss Havisham. Each installment of Great Expectations contained two chapters, and explains the crescendo's of climax found in the novel.
Plot: THe story follows Pip from childhood to adulthood. At first, he is seen as an orphan, being brought up by his harsh sister and her gentle husband, ... ...deals with this.
THoughts: Great Expectations is an interesting read in regards to atttitudes towards different classes, and for those who have interest in such history, there will no doubt be enjoyment from this novel. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book, and found it a captivating read, as you identify with the feelings of many characters; Joe's continuous kindness towards Pip, Pip's desire to be a genteman, and Miss Havisham's ...
