Blackhead. It’s such a dirty word. Nobody wants to admit having them but every now and then even the most perfect skin gets impurities. Having seen adverts for Clean and Clear’s Blackhead Clearing Cleanser I thought that it would be useful to buy it for those times when I have less than glowing, translucent porcelain skin.
I bought my 200ml bottle from Wilkinson for £2.89. It’s a blue bottle, a nice muted shade, so it won’t instantly jump out if anyone looks in the bathroom cabinet shouting “She’s got big black blobs on her nose!” It’s important to me that the packaging is discreet and while it may be aimed at the teenage market, it doesn’t look cheap, tacky or appear like it was designed by a bubblegum manufacturer. It claims to clear away the impurities in the skin, while having an ingredient that keeps blackheads from returning.
To use the Blackhead Clearing Cleanser couldn’t be simpler. Just apply a small amount to cotton wool and lightly wipe over your face and neck as you would with a toner, obviously avoiding the eye area. And seriously, avoid the eye area. I managed to get a small amount in my eye once and boy, did it sting! I find it’s better to wipe in small upward circles as this seems to be gentler than dragging down and also seems to remove more of those impurities. Take care not too wipe too firmly or it can sting anywhere there are opened pores. Also, be careful not to get it on irritated or broken skin as this also smarts quite sharply.
The smell of the cleanser is quite strong in the bottle with the faintly medicinal smell of tea tree and a small hint of menthol. You can definitely tell that it contains a certain amount of cosmetic alcohol in it as sniffing too deeply makes your eyes water. However, it only takes a small amount of time for the smell of the cleanser to evaporate from the skin. Be careful not to spill it on your clothes though, you’ll smell like blackhead remover all day. A scent not exactly designed to attract men, unless you particularly want to attract men who drink rubbing alcohol.
After wiping your skin the first thing you will notice is how repulsive your cotton wool pad is. Even after having a shower I have used the cleanser and found that it looks grubby. There is a slight tingle to my skin, feeling fresh and clean. The fresh feeling is rather deceptive though as the product contains menthol which will cool skin down. My skin does look clean though, as the cotton wool is testament to. My pores look smaller and less defined; there is a distinct lack of black speckles on my nose and my skin feels much more toned and grease free. I always use a moisturiser after cleansing my face and find I need no more than usual. There are no dry patches or uncomfortably tight areas even without my moisturiser. However, I find when I have make up on it is better to wash my face first to remove most of the make up as the cleanser isn’t very good at removing all traces of cosmetics unless you use vast quantities. Obviously, don’t ever use it to remove eye make as that area is far too delicate for anything astringent.
I find that all traces of the malevolent blackheads are gone for at least 12 hours, even on the days when I am in polluted areas or I have slightly greasier skin. I also have found that I am less likely to get spots or blemishes during the time I use it, so the preventive claim holds up well.
One thing that is annoying about this cleaner is that I can’t use it when I have fake tan on. It ruins the tan making streaky lines across your face. Most attractive. However, during the summer I find I get less blackheads so this isn’t much of an issue for me.
I don’t use this product every day as my skin only needs it in times of trouble but I find that using the cleanser once a day for around week leaves me about three quarters of a bottle, so somebody who uses it daily will get around a month out of one bottle which I think is very reasonable. The product works well, keeping blackheads and impurities away from my skin. I rarely get spots anyway, but I have found I get even less when using the cleanser. I don’t think my skin is as clean as it feels, but the product definitely succeeds in removing trapped dirt and in preventing those black speckles. The only criticism I have is in the lid, which has a tendency to come loose so the cleanser leaks but at the cheap price I can’t complain too much. I’d recommend this for people who, like me, have occasional skin problems (once a month!) as I don’t think it would work as effectively as some other products on more blemish prone skin. For me though, it stays. Even if it is as far back in the bathroom cabinet as I can push it.
Advantages: Really does seem to work, not too drying on skin Disadvantages: Leaves the cotton wool looking
...will actually make me feel clean at the end of the day. My complexion overall isn't too bad, but I have always had a problem with blackheads (who doesn't - actually, I don't want to know that, I'd be too jealous!), and working in a dusty environment definately doesn't help.
I am often quite wary of products like this, as although my skin is on the greasy side, it can also be quite sensitive, and so anything astringent always seems to do more harm ... ...purple - just like other Clean and Clear products. It has a flip top lid which I found very easy and convinient to use - no having to fumble around trying to screw a lid back on whilst holding wads of cotton wool. I'm pretty clumsy so anything that I can't close easily tends to get spilt!
The bottle contains 200ml, and the full list of ingredients are listed on the label on the back, along with instructions for use, and Johnson and Johnson's (the ...

Advantages: It does exactly what it says on the tin (well bottle!) Disadvantages: None that I've found.
...of my new purchases was Clean and Clear's Blackhead Clearing Cleanser which promised results from day one. The back of the bottle informs me that this has been 'specially formulated to start acting against blackheads from day 1. It removes oil, dirt and dead cells trapped deep in the pores - the impurities that can lead to blackheads. It also contains a blackhead fighting ingredient and helps prevent blackheads from coming back.' So far so good. ... ...after just one use of Clean and Clear Blackhead Clearing Cleanser! Well done Johnsons for actually living up to your claims.
I've since continued using this cleanser and I do think the blackheads on my nose are getting less and less noticeable. I also like that it makes my skin feel fresh and tight after washing with a foaming cleanser.
Clean and Clear Blackhead Cleaning Cleanser comes in a 200ml clear purple bottle. I paid £1.98 in Tesco where ...

...form of this cleanser from Clean and Clear, which promises to help clear blackheads and prevent spots. I've tried everything before I settled on this - expensive Elizabeth Arden products, cheap and cheerful herbal essences ones, clearasil, ten-o-six, avon...and none of it really reacted well to my skin. I prefer to use a lotion rather than a face wash (because I fight with two other beauty and fashion obsessed 20-something girls for the bathroom ... ...as possible in my room) so when I spotted this in Superdrug, I thought it was a worth a try. It's applied with cotton wool and wiped all over the face, then followed by toner and moisturiser (preferably from the same range, of course).
The lotion is incredibly liquid - more like a toner than a cleanser (in fact in the US it's marketed as an astringent). The bottle contains 200ml and cost me £3.99 (but that's London superdrug prices. I'm sure it ...

Advantages: small number of ingredients, soothes the skin, cleans the skin Disadvantages: doesn't seem to live up to its claim of eliminating blackheads completely
...make sure my skin is clean - and you can definitely see the dirt on the cotton wool! The lotion is cooling on the skin, leaving you with a pleasant tingling sensation as opposed to a harsh stinging that some other products induce. If there are any open wounds on the face (such as a small scratch or if you picked a scab!) then the cleanser can sting those a bit, as well as stinging the eyes. The cleanser doesn't dry out my skin and when since I've ... ...kind of spot/blemish. It leaves my skin feeling quite soft and I have noticed that the appearance of pores is diminished. When I first started using it, I thought that I saw immediate results on the blackhead clearing front but 3 months later, I'm not convinced that continuing to use it will ever clear my blackheads. The one thing I can say about it though, is that although I don't have less blackheads than when I started using it, they do seem smaller ...

Advantages: Great value for money Disadvantages: May strip skin of oils and cause spots that prevent them.
...keep your "boat race" as clean as possible and free from dirt and grease. So if you work in a kebab shop where the hygene is less than favourable, my advice is change your career (if you can call it that!) or buy a biro and learn to play "join the dots"!
Washing your face with regular soap will help to shift dirt and grease but what about all that trapped gunge? Step forward J & J's Blackhead cleanser. A bit like saying "use our new paint, will make your room more beautiful!". No it won't! It'll change the colour of my room but you can't say it will beautify my room! Anyway, semantics aside, this product does have the desired effect. After first application of this cleanser, I was shocked to see how much trapped dirt was on my face. Not wishing ...

Advantages: Clears blackheads and spots Disadvantages: None
...strips, prescribed creams, antibiotics, herbal oils, face saunas, little gadgets that are supposed to ‘draw out’ the impurity, the lot. But I had never found anything that actually worked, until now that is. Now that I’ve found Clean & ClearBlackheadClearingCleanser, my search is finally over.
I bought this product after seeing it advertised on TV. The advert was just what you’d expect, a pretty girl with a perfect complexion, who’s probably never had a spot in her life, using the product, and her equally fresh-faced friend saying, ‘but you don’t have any blackheads’, to which she replies, ‘exactly’.
Now, in case you’re wondering, I am not at all taken in by this type of advert, so it wasn’t the content of the advert that persuaded me to buy this product, but...

Advantages: fairly good value for money, effective, provide a nice clean feeling Disadvantages: may not be ideal for sensitive skin
...think I have mentioned before, tends to involve me using a medicated cleansing product combined with a rich moisturiser - for me, the best of both worlds. I think the skin on my face is pretty much combination skin - my nose and chin are oilier than the rest of my face. I had been doing fiddly things with cleansers and bits of cotton wool, or using a medicated facial wash (which I also find wastes too much time for my liking), so when I saw Clean & ClearBlackheadClearing Daily Cleansing Pads, I decided they were worth a shot. Convenient, good value for money (as far as I was concerned anyway), medicated and with the added benefit of blackhead fighting power - however could I resist???
The pads are packaged in a round tub, the purpley-blue colour of which matches the many other products in the range. It contains a whopping SEVENTY pads...

Advantages: It works! Disadvantages: May be compromised by poor skin regimes.
...I was quite late in my teens when I first started to develop problem skin, mainly in the form of blackheads and whiteheads. Having thought I was going to make it through puberty with clear skin, this annoyed me no end and I quickly found myself trying a whole variety of different products to help sort out my skin.
The first time I tried Clean&ClearBlackheadClearingCleanser was about a year ago, and I must admit I wasn't that impressed. It didn't really do anything to clear my blackheads, but it did leave my face feeling clean after using it. In my seemingly endless search for a skin regime that would leave me blackhead-free, it eventually got consigned to the back of my bathroom cabinet and generally forgotten about.
Just under a month ago, having changed cleanser and moisturiser to products that actually suit my skin type...
