I was one of those unlucky children, puberty started before I had even become a teenager and with it came the added misery of not only greasy hair and skin but the dreaded spots.
Now as I'm going back over 20 years you'll understand that there weren't that many products around to deal with it. Oh there were some, after all I'm not talking about the dark ages here although it was a pretty dismal time for me lol but the products available at the time just didn't work (for me anyway).
Before all you other 30 something's out there start shouting at me and telling me of the wonders you used yourself to get rid of the dreaded zits I'll explain some more. You see I also have extremely sensitive skin, why I only have to look at a pack of washing powder the wrong way and I go all blotchy (okay, slight exaggeration but you get the picture, right!) So most of the products available reacted badly with my skin and nine times out of ten, I'd end up with more spots then I started with.
Over the years through trial and error however I have found a limited amount of products that I was able to use. Most of these were soap free, perfume free, colour free...well as additive free as possible and one product name that I have come to rely on over the years is good old fashioned
Johnson & Johnson.
Still I had the problem of spots. I'm the grand old age of 35 now and I still get them. My problem was never down to teenage acne as I often hoped it was but just down to oily skin and through the years all I've been able to do is keep my skin as clean as possible and hope for the best!
That is until recently. A good friend of mine posted an opinion on here about one of the products from the Johnson & Johnson Clean & Clear range and I must admit I was quite impressed with what I read. Funny thing is though I'd never actually seen this range of products in my local shops even though they are made by the same company whose products I have been using for years!
The following day I nipped down to my local Tescos to search for this wonderful product and was surprised at the wide range that was available. There was a face wash, cleansing creams and cleansing wipes to name just a few but the one I finally went for was the Exfoliating Daily Wash. So why this one over all the others you may ask, well first off I read the front of the package which stated:
'For clean, smooth, beautifully clear skin – This facial wash contains gentle "micro – granules" which effectively remove excess oil, dirt and dead skin cells that can block pores and lead to spots. It also contains an anti-bacterial agent to fight problem causing bacteria. Clean & Clear Exfoliating Daily Wash is clinically tested to leave your skin smooth and beautifully clear.'
Sounds impressive doesn't it? Well I certainly thought so. When I got home I couldn't wait to give it a try so into the bathroom I went, right what do the instructions say?
Wet face: Okay easy enough, a nice splash of warm water followed. Squeeze product into hands: Hmm how much? It doesn't say, oh well nothing ventured and all that so I squeezed a pea sized amount onto my hands ready to start. Massage to gentle lather on your face: Wow, this feels really good, not only is it washing my face but I can feel the tiny granules rubbing against my skin. Rinse thoroughly: Well yeah, okay done that. Pat dry with towel: Right that was painless enough now for the results.
Now I wasn't expecting a miracle (and I didn't get one) but when I looked in the mirror I was impressed, after just one wash I could really see the difference. Apart from having rosy cheeks through rubbing all those granules in, my skin did actually look cleaner. I still had spots of course (what was I expecting a models complexion? lol) but overall I could see an improvement.
My pores looked clearer then they had in years and my skin had a nice healthy glow to it rather then the usual dull, lifeless appearance it normally had. I felt my cheeks and surprisingly they felt softer and smoother somehow. I got a piece of toilet paper and patted my forehead, nose and chin with it. Nope, no oily patches at all, it was completely dry and this was only day one!
The 'wash' comes in a 150ml squeezable blue tube and has a purple flip up lid which also doubles as a stand so that it can be stored in an upright position. Along with the description and the directions for use there are also the usual warnings to avoid contact with eyes and most importantly to keep away from children.
The 'wash' itself is a cloudy whitish liquid, with a thick enough consistency to stop it being too runny. It has a pleasant smell that's not dissimilar to other Johnson & Johnson products although the smell doesn't seem to linger once it has been washed off.
I would recommend to anyone using this that a small pea sized amount squeezed onto the end of your finger is enough to wash your face and neck and still get a nice lather. I tend to find that any more then this is just a waste. Plus it lasts for ages, I'm still on my first tube and there's well over half left.
So my final verdict. Well I have been using this product every day as recommended for several weeks now and it has made so much difference to my skin that I wish I'd found it years ago. I do still get the odd spot but note I said spot in the singular rather then spots. Where before I would get an outbreak of a dozen or more around my forehead and chin when I was due to start my period (sorry guys, but you women will know what I mean hehe) I now maybe get one or if I'm really unlucky I'll get two.
I don't mind too much though if I'm honest as they don't stay around for long as not only does it keeps spots away but any that do appear dry out almost straight away and are gone in a day or two. They don't become red and sore, they just disappear which is fine by me. My make-up now goes on a lot smother and stays on longer too and most importantly Clean & Clear doesn't irritate my skin. Now for a couple of quid you can't get much better then that can you!
For those of you who like me have sensitive skin and have to be careful what they use I will give a list of the ingredients, for those of you who are lucky enough to have perfect skin then stop being so bloody smug and leave me a nice comment lol and for Julie, thanks mate.
Clean & Clear Exfoliating Daily Wash, distributed by Johnson & Johnson ltd, Maidenhead and Dublin.
*Update*
I have now been using this product for almost a year now and it has made such a difference to my skin that I had to add to this op. Not only does my skin look so much better then it used to, my daughter has commented on how much softer it is and I have to agree.
It really is so good that I can't remember the last time I had to use a concealer, am I impressed? You bet I am, oh yes I almost forgot, I'm still on my first tube, now how's that for value!!!
