As a teenager i had quite good skin and practically no trouble from spots, however i decided to try and maintain this through out my teenage years and through adulthood. After reading a lot of advice from magazines i decided that people with the best skin used a cleanse, tone and moisturise routine. After a trip to Tesco and inspecting their selection of products i thought that i would try Clean and Clear's skin care range. One of the products that i most use is Clean and Clear's Shine Control Daily Facial Scrub with Bursting Beads.
ABOUT THE BRAND
Clean and Clear is a company which is owned by Johnson and Johnson. The brand was originally developed by Revlon as a brand of sensitive skin personal hygiene items in 1957. It was called Clean and Clear, because the products had no fragrance and no dyes and left no residue after rinsing. The original brand included shampoo, conditioners and facial skin care products. However in 1991 Revlon sold Clean and Clear to Johnson and Johnson. Johnson and Johnson have re-targeted Clean and Clear, particularly focusing on teenage skin and acne. The range is very similar to their Neutrogena range, however it is slightly cheaper and is aimed more at the younger market and young women in particular. However, it is expanding greatly and now caters for a wide range of skin conditions, including blackheads, dry skin, shiny skin and clogged pores.
WHAT IS SHINE CONTROL DAILY FACIAL SCRUB?
Shine Control Daily Facial Scrub is a scrub which is used on a daily basis to help clean skin, and pores. The product is supposed to cleanse the skin of impurities and reduce oils in the skin so that it is less oily and shiny. It is also supposed to help prevent spots as the cleaning of the pores removes dirt and helps to stop pores being blocked. Shine Control Daily Facial Scrub a gentle scrub with enough effect to clean the skin and be used every day. It contains lemon grass and fruit extracts, in the unique formula which is also oil – free. The scrub is water based and not oil as this can cause more oil to form on the skin, this can cause more grease and more shine.
DOES IT WORK?
I would definitely rate the Shine Control Daily Facial Scrub as it has proved to be an asset to my collection of toiletries. After day one of trying i didn't see much of a result, however after a week my skin was visibly less greasy and my nose was much less shiny. My skin which had been teetering on the edge of greasy is now much more matte. It has definitely improved my skin condition and made it cleaner and calmer. My skin has been more clean and less shiny and greasy. It has done exactly what it says on the tube and has not irritated my skin at all (although i have quite sensitive skin).
WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE
The outside of the tube for Shine Control Daily Facial Scrub is see-through green plastic with the blue New Clean & Clear logo on. At the bottom it has the Johnson and Johnson logo and above that in a yellow box the statement “OIL-FREE”. The writing on the tube (including the titles) is navy blue and white. The tube is wide at the top and thinner at the bottom, although it is not out of proportion. The standard bottle is 150 ml, which is the one i bought in Tesco. The actual scrub is a pale green colour, it has tiny white soap-like flakes inside along with small green “bursting beads”. It is of medium thickness although slightly watery (this is the oil-free part) it is quite gloopy and squidgy. It has quite a few air bubbles in the scrub too.
WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?
The scrub is quite gentle on you skin although the beads can feel a bit rough particularly on sensitive skin. It feels quite thick and a bit sticky when you first put it on and it can feel a bit sticky and i would advise that you pin your hair up as it will stick to the scrub and it can be very irritating and can look a bit stupid. Once you have washed the scrub off your skin feels quite tight and a fresh. It is quite invigorating and cleansing. Your skin feels newer and younger.
WHAT DOES IT SMELL LIKE
The Scrub has quite a distinctive smell, a bit like soap and a bit like glue. It is not a particularly unpleasant smell, but I wouldn't class it as very homely or comforting. It has a bit of a clinical smell about it. It also has a bit of a swimming, chlorine smell about it.
HOW TO USE
The directions on the back of the tube say that you must “Apply to wet face and gently massage all over face, avoiding eye area. Rinse Thoroughly. CAUTION: For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes In the event of contact – flush with water. Discontinue use if skin irritation develops.” However i would like to add that you may want to be careful around your nose as the area on the edge can be sensitive and sore when you wash it off. It is also is advised that you use a face cloth to wash off the scrub, and be gentle with your skin. I have found over past experience that it is best to follow with an oil free moisturiser too. The amount that it best to use ( for lasting and results of non-shiny skin) is around 2-3mm thick.
INGREDIENTS
The ingredients in the Shine Control Daily Facial Scrub are not organic, fair-trade or natural. They are as follows: Aqua, Glycerin, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Polyethylene, Lauryl Glucoside, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Citrus Aurantifolia Extract, Citrus Grandis Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Menthyl Lactate, Mannitol, Propylene Glycol, Cellulose, Hydroxypropl Methylcelluse, Tetrasodium EDTA, Sodiuum Hydroxide, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Parfum, Limonene, Linaloll, Butylphrnyl Methylpropional, CI 77289. Please read if you are often allergic ingredients in skin care products.
ADVERTS
There have been quite a few adverts on TV about Clean and Clear's Shine Control range, most of these are quite reasonable adverts with two young females, one who has an issue with shiny skin (this is shown when a picture is taken and the skin of said actress looks shiny) they then discover the skin care range and BOOM their skin problems are solved. It is quite a short and clear advert, and although some-what unrealistic, not too annoying. The actresses are a little bit on the perfect side, but still quite natural looking in their beauty. The settings for most of the adverts are quite sunny and warm, again a bit perfect and un-natural; however in the perfect world of advertising they are not bad and not too annoying.
OTHER INFORMATION
The tube is recyclable, when washed (please check with your local counsel to check for plastic recycling) and it was made in the EU, however some of the ingredients may be sourced/made elsewhere. The tube is type 7 recycling which means that it is another type of plastic. Type 7 plastic has not been recycled until now, however some places will now accept type 7 plastic, some sources say that it can leach potential hormone disruptors into the liquid. The scrub is sticky and dries hard and quite solid when it reacts with the air, it would be best advised to clean the top of the cap of all extra scrub as it will become quite disgusting and stick the lid down. The website for Clean and Clear is www.cleanandclear.com, it is a bright website, with a white and blue background and the Clean and Clear logo. It has details of all the products online; you can order them at the RRP and read the description all about the products and what it is supposed to do for you skin. You can also find out a little about the company, although this is not very detailed and is un-clear about quite a few things. When you buy products online there is a postage and packaging charge and the prices can be a bit too . It also shows you where to buy products and answers your questions about the products. It also includes a service where it will help you find the right product, for your skin. It will ask you questions about your skin and then give you a selection of products that should help improve your skin. The prices was £3.21 in Tesco with money off and the price for this product will range from between £4.00 - £3.00, depending where you shop and what offers are on. The care line for Clean and Clear products is 0846012261 in the UK and 1850220044 in IRL. When i rang up they answered my questions about organic and fair trade ingredients in a friendly and professional manner, and the waiting time was not too long.
THE GOOD
It actually works! Is kind on sensitive skin. Good helpline service. Not too expensive
THE BAD
Not Organic. Not fair trade. Not not animal tested.
THE CONCLUSION
The Clean and Clear Shine Control Daily Facial Scrub is good at doing it's job. It is gentle with sensitive skin and really does reduce greasy/oily skin and reduce shine. It has a good price, a good reputation and a really good website and help line service. The product smells nice, looks nice, feels a little bit weird, but all in all has very little fault with it. Unfortunately it does not give anything back to the environment, as it is not a fair trade product and is not made from organic ingredients. It is not guaranteed not tested on animals and is not made from natural ingredients. This is the only downside to the product as it a great product; it clears up spots, keeps skin oil and shine free and really does help your skin. I would recommend it, but is our vanity for good skin worth hurting the planet? Or is there another product, just as good but more environmentally friendly? Thank You for reading!! Ratty xxx P.S. please ignore the picture Ciao have put up this is wrong.

The product tells you to 'apply to wet face and gently massage all over face, avoiding eye area. Rinse thoroughly.' I'd like to add to that, you should also avoid the mouth area or you'll feel like you're eating sand.

...do it. I do. The Clean & Clear Morning Burst Shine Control Scrub is my choice of weapon in the war against dirty and greasy looking skin and it works really well. My skin can look a bit rough around the edges and (especially my face) greasy so when it comes to skincare products I often find myself paying more that I really want to. As the title suggests it has 'shine control' which, in my experience, dramatically reduces the greasy look of skin.
