I must admit, I am a bit of a sucker for overpriced cosmetics, skincare products being one of my weaknesses. Last spring, I decided to indulge in a pampering skincare routine, and visited my local perfumerie to find out what would make my skin turn to peaches and cream (I hoped overnight). It was suggested I try the tried-and-true Clinique 3-Step program. I was promised better skin in just two weeks! I was less than thrilled with my (very pricey) purchases.

The combo:

The three step skincare program consist of a bar of hard milled soap according to skin type (I was assigned type I/II which is normal to combination skin), a clarifying lotion also according to skintype (I was recommended to use 'clarifying lotion 2'), and Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion, aka DDML, for all skin types. For the whole set which consisted of

- 1 bar of soap ca. 100g

- 1 bottle of clarifying lotion 200ml

- 1 bottle of DDML 125ml

I paid roughly CHF 150.- which is about £75. Very expensive, but I felt I needed it ;)

Step 1:

Okay, I must admit I thought it was a bit strange when I read the suggestion for using the soap: 'first remove all makeup'...so what's the point of this soap if I have to wash my face before using it, I asked myself. The soap is unscented, as are all of the skincare products, yellow in colour and comes in a handy soap dish. The soap dish is pale green, rounded and looks quite posh with CLINIQUE written in silver on the top, and the soap can be slid out on a little tray. It is hard milled, so it does last a very long time, and lathers up quite nicely. I felt it left a nasty film on my skin and burned like hell when it went into my eyes. Plus the ingredients suggest that it is a simple soap, with nothing spectacular in it, and therefore a scam. I lather up my pre-washed moist skin, and then rinse with plenty of warm water.

Step 2:

The clarifying lotion comes in various sizes, the most practical in my opinion being the 200ml size. The bottle is translucent, with a pale green plastic cap, the Clinique trademark colour. It promises to remove the last traces of impurities and freshen the complexion. One applies it to a cotton pad and strokes it all over the face. I must admit it does a good job of removing the soap gunk from my face. The ingredients are also very simple, including alcohol and witch hazel, which makes me feel it is also highly overpriced.

Step 3:

The DDML is actually quite lovely. The bottle I purchased came in a plastic rectangular translucent bottle with a pump dispenser, which dispenses the perfect amount. I believe it normally comes in a frosted glass bottle with a twist-off silvery top. The lotion is golden in colour, and clinique refers to it as their 'golden genius'. It is quite light and leaves my skin feeling soft and supple, but it is a bit oily for the daytime.

The nitty-gritty:

In my opinion, this system is highly overpriced, and the results weren't dramatic. I would never buy the soap again, the clarifying toner is no better than drugstore brands like Neutrogena, but the moisturizer is great, especially at night for normal to combination skins. Too oily for oily skins. I would splurge on the moisturizer, but use a different, less expensive cleanser and toner
