I have tended to use the same under eye concealer from Clinique for years now. So when I breezed through Debenhams a couple of weeks back I was really hoping to be able to pick some up immediately and be on my way without the need for undue scrutiny by one of their sales staff.

No such luck.

I searched and searched and the product I had been buying all this time was simply nowhere in sight. So I had to ask one of the sales assistants for help, darn it.

Sure enough the perfectly good under eye concealer that I had been entirely satisfied with for years had been discontinued.

If I had stopped to think, I suspect I might have moved on to a different counter and have spent more than 30 seconds thinking about the various products available to me as up-to-date replacements: but I didn’t. You see, as usual, I was in a rush so I just asked the Clinique assistant (who had WAY too much make-up on by the way: why oh WHY do they always do that?) what alternatives they had available.

She volunteered this Clinique Airbrush concealer. Fine, think I: I’ll have some. But whoa there cowboy, slow down the horses, this lady has obviously been taught how to sell the stuff so sell it she will - even though I’m already “sold” if you see what I mean!

The product she produces is in the standard light green packaging which is the Clinique signature colour; it is in the shape of a rather broad pencil with a silver top and silver writing in French and English. (Doesn’t Retouche Lumière sound so much better?!) Anyway, she proceeded to elaborately illustrate the amazing characteristics of this “airbrush” on my (already concealer’ed up) face.

She put three “dots” of the product under each of my eyes, she “drew” into my laughter lines around my mouth and some rather worrying fine lines under my nose (one would think that I’d spent an undue amount of my years to date pouting like Marilyn to deserve these, really you would!). She then gently blended them in with one delicate stroke.

This lady was clearly of the school of thought that this concealer was basically fit to conceal anything whatever, and in truth I was rather impressed with the results. The result was as good, if not better than I was used to on the darker skin around my eyes and the product did manage to reduce the shadows that make fine lines visible. The other thing that I did like about this product is that the concealer itself seems to be remarkably light and just blends into the skin effortlessly.

I parted with my £15 for the 0.5 fluid ounces and was on my way.

Humm, now that doesn’t sound like much actual goo does it? 0.5 fluid ounces? I have since realized that Clinique are probably feeling that they can demand such high prices because of the “delivery system” that the cream is contained in. What they mean by the rather inflated name “airbrush” is a simple mechanical system whereby under the lid you will spy a brush. By turning the bottom of the pencil, product is pushed up into the brush. Clinique call this a “flow-thru” pen. Do doubt their marketing people have been in touch with MacDonalds, heaven forfend. Anyway, this needs several turns to get going but only one or two each time it is used. Hardly space-age technology, definitely not deserving of the name “Airbrush” but rather handy and well thought out nonetheless!

I have really come to rely on this product - it goes on in the morning and lasts all day without becoming visible, disappearing entirely or clogging pores. It is so light to wear that I pretty much immediatley forget that I've got it on and it comes off with a quick swipe at bedtime.

However, given that most of the weight of the pencil is in the packaging rather than the product there is little, if any way of knowing how much of the concealer is left.

Mine ran out this morning.

That means I’ve used £15 in 0.5fl oz of concealer in something like three weeks. Oh dear.
You are going to have to take my word for it that I haven’t been using this stuff to camouflage or completely conceal my entire body, so I think we can all agree that for me at least, this is not good value!

OVERALL

Three points from me for:
  • The soft nature of the product that blends so easily into the skin.
  • The “airbrush” system that is so easy to use.
  • The flexible nature of the stuff so that it can diffuse light in shadows as well as conceal dark circles.

Two points from me lost for:
  • The tiny volume of the stuff and the fact that you can’t tell when it’s going to run out.
  • The enormous expense to me given that it ran out so quickly.

That means if you are very rich then you might well be interested, but for me, well I shall try to remember to shop around this time.

Sounds like a match for Yves st Laurents Radient Touch!

I've never been too good with concealers, I tend to end up with more colour in one area than in another. If I spot a cheap one on ebay I might just treat myself to it, since I have found clinique products are so much gentler than other products on the market. Excellent review Kirsty :)

*tuts* I hate when expensive products run out too fast! Hopefully you'll find a cheaper alternative :)
