Toner....hmmmm...do I need this? I'm very much a skincare fanatic, and spend far too much of my salary on the latest creams and gels. I have very dry skin and therefore it's usually spot-free so I pride it as an asset and am very pleased when people remark on my clear skin. I may not have the prettiest face, but I'm gonna make the best of what I've got! ;-)
So morning and evening I cleanse and moisturise thoroughly and at regular intervals in a week I will exfoliate and use hydrating masks and oils. However, toner (or Clarifying Lotion as it’s called by the guys and gals at
Clinique) is something I could really take or leave.
So what is toner for anyway? --------------------------------------- Toner is used after cleansing and before moisturising. A few years ago I was of the opinion that toner was used to remove excess oils on greasy skin, perhaps a reason why I was never a dedicated user of it. However, in the last 3 to 4 years I have seen more and more toners specifically for dry or normal skins. These claim to make the skin smoother and brighter as they remove dead surface skin cells. Humph...personally I think using a gentle exfoliator once or twice a week would be the more effective way to achieve that.
How did you come to be in possession of this toner when you're obviously not a dedicated user? ------------------------------------------------ Oh, you know, the usual stars-in-my-eyes-at-a-giveaway thing. Buy 2 Clinique products and get a free goodie bag with tester size Clinique products. I am always a sucker for these offers. So in my latest goodie bag I got a quite generous 60ml size bottle of the Clarifying Lotion 2 (for normal skin).
And....how was it? ------------------ 1. Appearance I like how Clinique present this toner. No messing about - simply a plastic clear bottle with an easy to unscrew cap and as ever printed on the side some wonderful promises of what using this product will do for you. 4 out of 5.
2. Ease of Use Very easy. I simply put some toner on a cotton pad (it pours out of the bottle like water) and then wipe it over my face, making sure to avoid the "sensitive eye area". Quick, non-messy and a very small amount is required on the cotton pad. 5 out of 5.
3. Smell Oh, big thumbs down...it smells like extremely strong nail varnish remover. When I am applying the toner I have to keep my eyes closed as the vapours from it actually hurt my eyes. This is a very unpleasant aspect of the lotion. The first time I went to use the lotion I nearly threw the bottle away without trying it as I thought a product with such a strong smell would surely be very harsh on the skin. Thankfully it doesn't seem to be and it hasn't caused any kind of a breakout but my olfactory sense only gives this product 0 out of 5.
4. Effect About 5 seconds after using the toner my skin is positively tingling - it's a wonderful clean and healthy feeling. I notice if there is any trace of makeup left on my face after cleansing the toner will remove it and this is a good benefit. After this I apply the moisturiser but the pleasant tingling effect lasts for at least half an hour. The Clinique site tells me "Skin appears smoother, softer, with more light-reflecting qualities." Hmm...the smoother, softer bit - fine, I can buy that. As for the light-reflecting qualities - not sure if that means I should be walking around with a shiny face, but luckily that's not the case! ;-) 5 out of 5 for effect.
So, what is the overall verdict? Am I now a dedicated user of toner? Erm...no. I don't use the toner all the time, only when my eye happens to fall on the bottle. When I do I'm always pleasantly reminded what a nice cooling feeling it gives my skin, but am yet to be convinced that it's a product I really need.
If you feel you need to use toner then I would recommend this product. If you think you're getting along fine without a toner then you probably don't need to be investing your well-earned money in this. A 200ml bottle costs £ 13.50.

A really great opinion! I'm like you...don't let me near a Clarins counter when there's a promotion on!

I used to use Toner but I'm afraid I have got a bit lazy in my old age! I now go for those wipe thingies ~ so much easier! The thing that annoys me about Clinque et al is their reps in white coats who won't leave you alone if you happen to venture onto their plot in Debenhams! That usually gets me running to the door! (I guess I have a white coated woman phobia!!!!)
