a little bit about the brand and product:
Clinique is actually an american not french brand now owned by Este Lauder who also own brands like clarins, mac, bobby brown, aveda, skii and several more high end products as well as their own este lauder range of products. Clinique was founded in 1968 and was the first company to introduce their famous 3 step system still followed by almost every brand now that is cleanse-tone and moisturise.
The clarifying lotion is the "toner" part although I was told it actually works more like an exfoliator and gets rid of dead skin cells as u sweep it across your face. The packing is an opaque cylinder bottle of either 200ml's or 500 ml's with a green screw top lid. It comes in 5 formulations: mild, 1,2,3,4.
hokaii.......... now onto my experience with the clarifying lotion:
I remember going to the clinique counter around the age of 19 i was breaking out horribly and had tried neutrogena, clearasil, clean and clear all with very short results and sore skin. I was asked a series of questions by the sales assistant to determine what type my skin was (you can do this yourself on the clinique website if you like). I was told I had a skin type 2 and was given mild soap, clarifying lotion 2 and dramatically different hydrating lotion for oily/combination skin.
while the soap and lotion worked well enough I found that the lotion had a smell similar to TCP or Dettol maybe.. and while i was told I should expect a little tingleing i was suffering a full blown burning sensation..I went back to house of frasier to return the toner and swap it for a the clariying lotion 1. This one actually worked really well.. after washing my face I noticed a noticeable difference in pore size and no matter how clean my face seemed something always came off with cotton wool. As it is an exfoliating toner I would definitely recommend you use a cotton wool pad/ball with it than just splashing it on with your hands. The main ingredients are salicylic acid which is well known in helping fight acne and exfoliating the skin and witch hazel distillate which tightens pores, dries spots. I have found using a gentler lotion to the one prescribed by the sales assistant has always worked for me. The lotions do contain a large amount of alcohol which can dry the skin out and would suggest the Mild variation for those with drier skin as this is alcohol free.
Its been a while since I used this but I am considering of buying it again and add into my dermalogica routine. Of all three steps this probably the most important and if you are tight for cash buy the clarifying lotion from clinique a good cleanser like clean and clear cream wash and good moisturiser like olay complete care.
