I’m a bit of a beauty tart and am rarely loyal to a product. Call it curiosity, if you wish! But generally it is rare that I buy a product more than once. Bearing in mind, that I am also not Clinique’s biggest fan and find some of their products over-hyped, it is really something that I’ve stayed true to this Deep Cleansing Emergency mask since I first tried it ten years ago.
THE PRODUCT Clinique’s Deep Cleaning Emergency Mask is a chalky white colour and according to the tube it is a “clay-based treatment for oily, pore-clogged, skin-under stress”. The texture is smooth and creamy, allowing you to spread it easily onto your face.
The mask is allergy tested and I’ve never experienced any skin irritations after using it. It is supposed to be for oily skin, but I have combination skin, and find it works just as well. I’m not sure how it would work for someone with dry or sensitive skin and you may need to be careful that it isn’t too harsh; Clinique often have small sample sizes you could test and you could also ask the assistant that usually hangs around the Clinique counters at department stores for advice.
It is also fragrance-free, and so does not interfere with your normal perfume/moisturiser smell or if you prefer, leaves you to feel free to smell natural.
USAGE Make sure your skin is dry and you’ve taken off all your make-up. Then apply a thin layer (about a penny sized amount). It is easy to spread out, unlike some masks that have a tendency to be gunky. You don’t need to put it all over your face, just the oily bits such as your forehead, nose, etc.
I used to think that if I put a thicker layer on it would work even better, but the opposite happens (i.e. nothing!) The product needs to dry up completely to allow it to draw out oils and unclog pores, so a small amount of product is sufficient to create a thin layer.
Next step: go read a magazine, check your email … anything apart from trying to put clothes on which will get very mucky! As the mask drys up, your skin will feel tight and you’ll know it’s working! After 5 minutes, rinse off thoroughly with luke-warm water. Like all masks, you may have to splash a few times to get it off completely and some may get in your hair if you apply too close to your hairline. I find it helps afterwards to splash quickly with very cold water, if you can bare it!
INGREDENTS The mask mainly contains aloe and kola nut extract, which calm, soothe and soften skin. For detailed ingredients, check out the instructions inside the box (which I’ve lost!).
THE PACKAGING This mask is packaged in a creamy white tube with Clinique’s pale green typeface. It’s not bad packaging – very clean-cut. Makes me think more of preppie American kids leaping around (think: GAP, Tommy Hilfiger ads) than sophistication and elegance. But whatever … it works!
PRICE A 100 ml tube costs £15.50 (EUR 25). The good news is the tube lasts a long, long time (at least a year using on a regular basis). Many department stores also have Clinique ‘bonus times’, where you get free travel-size products when you purchase a Clinique product (last time I got a lipstick, mascara, moisturiser, makeup bag, and a sample of their perfume).
WHERE TO BUY? You can buy Clinique just about anywhere these days: Boots, most department stores, and online (www.clinique.co.uk). I normally buy this mask at duty-free airports to save money.
SO DOES IT WORK? After using this mask, my skin immediately feels much fresher. Most importantly, it fulfils its objective of clogging pores. You will really have to look closely in a mirror afterwards to notice pores that pre-mask were very visible.
To conclude, it is one of the few products I’ve used that other people notice and comment on! I find it also leaves my face much softer. The benefits are more long-lasting than any other face masks I’ve tried, but don’t tend to last beyond a couple of days, which is why I don’t think it is just for emergencies! More like once a week or fortnight! Although I love it and it works for me, I’m aware that it’s not for everyone, particularly dryer, more mature skins, and hence I’m reducing it to four stars!

Advantages: Clean, youthful, even-toned complexion. Disadvantages: Take care on dry areas.
I am 38 and have used this facemask on occasion over the past ten years. I have combination skin with moderate sized pores in my t-zone and dry patches elsewhere. I have few lines and although I tan easily, I have moderately fair skin, as I do not worship the sun!
This mask is particularly good in the t-zone, leaving pores clean, but also lifts dry patches from other areas. Skin appears clear and even following this 5-minute wonder. It is excellent ... ...Firstly, I cleanse my skin with a rinse off cleanser to insure there is little oil residue. As a tip, I apply to my t-zone first and then to the rest of my face as this mask should not be left more than five minutes on dry areas. I also apply a thin layer to my décolletage. I suggest that you wash off with water only, no need for further cleansing or toning products. Apply moisturiser of choice and ten minutes later apply make-up of choice. However, ...

Advantages: it cleans the pore deeply and this reduce blackhead and oil. Disadvantages: it is quite expensive
...is quite normal price for clinique products but believe me, it is worth paying. The assistant at clinique counter told me this product would clean pore-clogged skin and will reduce the blemish. It is not possible to reduce pore size but it is possible to reduce the appearance of pores. This product just does what it is said to do. Just first time I tried it, I could feel the difference. After keep using it, I barely see pores on my nose unless I ... ...no annoying blackhead anymore! The best thing I feel about this product is it just does what it is said to do. While other products exaggerate that they can reduce pore size and cannot really do it, this product does its work perfectly. It basically clean the pore deeply to get rid of blackhead and clogged-pores and gradually reduce the visible of pores. Although it is for oily skin, it is a good choice for people with mixed skin. As you can apply ...

Advantages: Leaves skin feeling refreshed and super soft Disadvantages: Can take a while to rinse off
I bought this product on a whim at an airport a few years ago and haven't looked back since. My skin is combination- forehead dry, nose and chin oily and the rest is ok. I hear people say that the product is quite pricey (around £15 for 100ml) but I think it's worth the money as you're stuck with the face you have for the rest of your life- why not invest in it?? The tube also lasts me quite a while as I only use the product every couple of weeks ... ...smooth and easily spread over the face and eventually dries to a chalky white substance. As the mask starts to dry you can feel your skin tightening slightly which is always a pleasant sensation.
I usually apply all over my face when I feel my skin needs a bit of a boost but this would be great for regular use on specific problem areas.
After the mask has completely dried I personally find it best to get in the shower to rinse it off as it can ...

...guessing that because it is Clinique it will be around ten pounds. The face mask is absolutely wonderful, when its on the face you can really feel that it is doing its job and removing all the grime that builds up in your pores. I also have really sensitive skin and this face mask was perfect for me because it cleansed my skin deeply but it was not too harsh.
The mask was also really easy to remove with soap and water. I left it on for just ten ...
