After a few too many Bacardi and Cokes one fine evening I decided to overnight with a girlfriend at her place rather than trek home to mine. Next morning the usual ritual when at another person's home...brush my teeth, fix my hair, have a good look at the lotions, creams and perfumes scattered around. Heh, it would be rude not to show an interest...(and no, awful as it sounds, no shower...I have a SERIOUS issue with running water when I'm hungover, the sound/sight of which is guaranteed to have me running head-first to the toilet. If there's anyone out there who could explain why this is and how to overcome it, I'd love
to hear from you!!)
And so it was that on this fine morning I first came across Clinique Happy. Oh, what a happy day. The very next day I went straight out to purchase a bottle for myself. Let me explain why...(this is my first perfume op, so I hope I am able to express the experience clearly for everyone).
WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? Well, since you ask, I have the 50ml size and it comes in a tall slimline glass bottle with a silver cap. Clinique happy is printed across the top, near the cap, clinique in white and happy in Orange. It fits very comfortably into your hand, and though very simple is very classy in its own way.
WHAT KIND OF SPRAYING ACTION? Boy is "spraying" the correct word...there is no way to gently ease this perfume out onto your wrists, neck etc. I aim at my wrist and press down and I can feel the perfume as far up as the inside of my elbow! Not a problem there but just beware if you spray it around your neck as it may get in your eyes. Ouch.
HOW'S THE SMELL? (Here follows a paragraph with far too much references to the word "smell"...somebody buy this girl a thesaurus!!) I have been seriously hooked on this smell since the first time I tried this at my friend's house. It smells very much of citrus, but not an over-poweringly orange smell, more an exotic blend with also a very floral bouquet. The first time I sprayed this I immediately thought of oranges, but not the sort of stinging smell you get when someone is peeling an orange next to you, it's much more subtle. It is a very fresh clean smell - definitely a daytime smell and not as sophisticated a smell as I like for my evening scents (e.g. Chanel no. 5).
HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL? My other favourite perfume is Contradiction from Calvin Klein but I find the name has little relation to the perfume. However, in the case of this perfume, "Happy" is SUCH a suitable name. No matter what time I spray on this perfume, first thing in the morning or simply "because I'm worth it" in the evening, it's like receiving a wake-up call to the senses and you do feel like you've just given yourself a real treat. If I'm stressed this is the perfume I reach for - there is none other which peps me up and gets me feeling all positive. It is like spraying yourself with optimism...corny, I know. I don't work for Clinique, by the way, this is not marketing nonsense...this is genuinely how it makes me feel.
LASTING POWER? Oh-oh, big disappointment. I can only get the smell for about 1 hour tops and then that's it, I'm afraid. The perfume is a little too heavy to be carrying around in my handbag so I occasionally take a little tube of Clinique Happy lotion which I have since bought to use as a top up. It's such a light, free, airy essence that it seems to disappear far too quickly. I don't apply this perfume before I go to work because by the time I've reached the office I can't smell it anymore, and I like to smell my perfume during the work day, so as to give myself an olfactory boost!
ANY DUBIOUS AFTER-EFFECTS? I have unfortunately quite sensitive skin. I don't spray any perfumes on my neck as it normally causes an outbreak. Some perfumes cause me to break out with a slight rash on my lower arms and they get itchy. However, with Clinique Happy I have absolutely no bad reaction so big thumbs up there from me.
Hope I've convinced a few of you folks out there to give this perfume a thorough check the next time you're in your local Boots. All together now "Forget your troubles come on get happy, come and chase all your blues away.............."
50ml costs £29.50
