I've taken a very keen interest in my personal grooming over the past years, using moisturiser and "product" for a long time, helping to stave off the onset of tired skin and worry lines. The downside of taking such an interest is trying to find the right product to suit skin type and to achieve the desired results. Sometimes, this can be frustrating and, on many occasions, can lead to men buying skin products that just don't suit. This is my experience with Clinique M Lotion and, unfortunately, that can be an expensive mistake to make!!
The Product
The product itself comes very neatly packaged in 100ml tubes, fitting well into the hand and making dispensing the cream very easy and controllable. It is a slightly off putting light yellow colour, but is extremely smooth and is absorbed into the skin very easily. Fortunately, a small amount really goes go a long way and offers excellent coverage. The cream is virtually scent free and is very comfortable on the skin so, in my experience, offers no irritation or stinging. The reputable Clinique name means that this is a very high quality, well researched product.
The range of Clinique for Men products is impressively growing, with face scrub, hydrating eye gel and high moisture cream readily available. Added to the wide range of scruffing and shaving products available, if the products fit, and the wallet is fat enough, then all of your grooming needs could be covered by the range.
The Problems
So far so good, you are thinking, but putting the cap back on the tube ends the pleasurable experience.
I found that the cream disappeared into my skin very quickly, which meant that the smoothness of the effect was very short lived. Skin types vary, obviously, so the results will differ from person to person, but I felt that my skin was drying out all too quickly and that I needed to re-apply the cream to get the full benefits of it's smoothness. I found that, particularly in cold weather, I was applying the cream at least 3 times a day!
Such regular application seemed to have a strange effect on my skin, which is slightly dry, but nothing unusual, in that it seemed to pick up a slightly yellow colour. I'm sure that this is not a usual side effect, but I could certainly see some colouration.
M Lotion is obviously not the product for me, which, ordinarily, would be easy to accept. However, the price is somewhat punitive and makes the error an expensive one! The 100ml tube ranges from £17.50 in high street chemists to £19-£20 in department stores and on the Clinique website, so I would highly recommend that to try before you buy, if possible.
I would not recommend this product, particularly to men with drier skin, purely on the basis that I needed to use it many times a day to feel any real benefit. The tube was quickly emptied, and at £17+ a time, there are cheaper, and more appropriate, products on the market.
