Clinique AlmostMakeup SPF15 is a sheer alternative to foundation. It's somewhere between foundation and tinted moisturiser in terms of coverage and benefits. You can get it from Clinique counters in department stores, or online, so it's usually easy to find. It comes in 4 different shades from 'Fair' through to 'Deep', and it costs £18.50 for a 45ml tube.
It contains SPF15 non-chemical sunscreens and Antioxidants, to protect your skin from environmental damage. It's oil-free, non-acnegenic and non-comedogenic, as well as being ophthalmologist tested, so it's safe for use on all skin types, and around the delicate eye area. It's a waterproof formula for long wear, and it contains light-diffusing particles to help mask imperfections, and botanical extracts to soothe the skin.
It comes in a small green tube with a silver screw-on lid. It's easy to get it out of the tube without ending up with too much, and you don't need to use a lot at a time. The best way to apply it is to put it on your hands and sweep your hands over your entire face as though you were putting a moisturiser on, then just take a little more care in making sure the edges are blended.
I have the 'Fair' version and it's a perfect match for my skin tone. It's really smooth to apply and blends in really easily, there's no need to use sponges or brushes. It gives a really natural look, and doesn't feel heavy or greasy. When I use this it doesn't look or feel like I'm wearing make-up at all, it just evens out my skin tone and smoothes over fine lines to give me a healthier, fresh-faced look. It makes a really good base for other make-up too, especially on the eyelids, my eyeshadow stays put for so much longer when I use this as a base.
I don't think it's as long-wearing as it makes out, at least not on my skin anyway. I have combination-oily mature skin, and it does last through a full day of work without coming off or melting, but it doesn't look as good after a few hours, it becomes more obvious that you're wearing it, but it still doesn't look like a foundation.
This is the only base I use now. I've never liked foundations, they always feel too heavy and look too obvious, but tinted moisturisers don't give enough coverage, so this is a perfect balance between the two. It lasts ages as well so although it's quite expensive to buy, it works out quite well in the long run.

Advantages: Blends well, isn't heavy, protects against sun related skin damage Disadvantages: Can get water-y (separates), expensive, middling coverage
