One of the advantages of being single and vain is that the money I save from not having a regular girlfriend can be invested in my own vanity, rather than her vanity. Harsh, but true! Whilst other people dread Mondays I always enjoy them, especially as I often take Monday off, because it is there to be taken off really. In the style of “About a Boy” I tend to spend a good two units on lunch, two or three units on going to the hairdresser, and of course three units on shopping, before 4 units on going out for coffee, often extending to eight units in good company! Of course I don’t go to the hairdresser weekly, so I usually have time to fill with more shopping if not in the hairdressers…
In a recent trip to Douglas, one of my cosmetic stores of choice, I went in search of the new Yves St Laurent Facial Peeling for Men – alas it has not yet hit Austria,
so there was the thought of either returning my easily-earned money to the piggy bank or choosing the more acceptable option, i.e. finding a substitute product, and this is where Clinique stepped in! Clinique Skin Supplies for Men - Face Scrub is a little bit classier than your average facial scrubs, although many would probably baulk at the price tag of EUR23.70 for a 100ml tube, which is around the GBP15 mark. The tube does however go a long way, with the 100ml tube still half full after daily (as recommended) application daily for the last 5 weeks, and I find there is a lot less wastage than with the cheaper facial scrubs, but it may be because I am more careful with this stuff than I would if it were available for a mere GBP2-3 a tube.
The packaging is simple – a cardboard box in grey and with white and silver writing with directions for use in five languages and the ingredients in English on three of the four sides. There are more detailed instructions included inside – just in case you need to know how to apply the stuff… The gunk comes in a minimalist grey tube with white writing, with a flip top cap. The face scrub is very simple to use, with differing instructions depending on whether you have skin that is easily irritated or not. I tend to have pretty good skin, although chafing from batting in a cricket helmet recently has meant that my chin has become a bit sensitive, so I can therefore compare the two methods of use. For easily irritated skin, the manufacturer recommends that you apply some of the face scrub to the area and leave it to work for about 2 minutes, which is what I do for my chin. For less-irritable skin, then it is recommended to apply the face scrub to your face whilst it is wet and leave for a minute before rubbing it through again and rinsing.
I find that the fine scrubbing granules are very noticeable on my skin and that they work hard and remove a fair amount of dead skin cells that other products have hitherto not been able to remove. The feeling of rubbing the gritty scrubbing granules certainly wakes you up, although on sensitive skin this would not be an advisable plan of action – I find that my skin has a warm feeling to it for a few minutes after use, but at the same time the feeling is of invigoration rather than burning. The face scrub is a foundation-like creamy base containing a lot of very fine granules which do the scrubbing. Having used various foot creams for removing hard skin, it is a similar kind of concept, although of course the granules for removing hard skin are considerably coarser than those used in the face scrub. It has been allergy tested and is fine to use on sensitive skin, although contact with the eye area is to be avoided (probably more because of the scrubbing granules than the actual creamy base). The face scrub, whilst it smells a bit of TCP from the tube doesn’t really smell at all when you put it on your face, and it is effective for facial peelings.
Admittedly the price tag is on the high side – doubtless I’ll get a comment about how I could buy 6 Avon products or Lush products for the same price, and when you buy a deodorant stick to match on of your aftershaves to boot, then you’ll find that you tend to have to work occasionally on Mondays to afford to take them off, but I would still say that it is worth the money, even though the pricetag causes me to dock a star from this product.

Great review. A little expensive, and I don't use it often enough, but a great product.
