Advantages: entertaining, easy reading, attractive, reasonable price, variety Disadvantages: quite a few advert pages, could have more
I tend not to buy magazines much these days due to having no money nor time to read them. However, having been signed off sick this week with laryngitis I had become bored with television and was pleased when my mum turned up with the essentials (lucozade, painkillers, chocolates, flowers) and a couple of magazines. One of them was closer as she knew that when I do buy magazines it is one of the ones that I prefer.
The front of the magazine features photos and headlines of the key stories, almost all of which are celebrity based. Inside the magazine the stories and features are mostly celebrity based by about 20% are about real people which I feel is a reasonable balance. The celebrity stories are mostly the main stories of the month and in this particular issue focus on Cheryl Cole, Billie Piper, Charlotte Church, Britney Spears ...
Advantages: Celebs , Interesting , Good Features, Good value for £££ Disadvantages: Very focused on celeb Bodies
in white , read 'Closer'. For £1.20 I thought it was good value for money , as it was quite a thick magazine. I took it straight to the counter and paid for it.
The issue of Closer I will be reviewing is the latest one ; Issue 305 (September 6 - 12 2008). The cover is very colourful and attractive. In the top right hand corner is Ulrika Johnson with the words "I look rubbish & I'm a size 16 but I'm happier than ever" , as well as a picture of her and her baby. Including a little 'tag' by their picture which says 'exclusive family pics'. I liked the look of this as , for once it was a celebrity saying 'I don't care what size I am' instead of the usual 'size zero' celebrities , which quite frankly , I'm sick of!
To the left of the cover is a picture of Jade Goody with a yellow box with the following written in it ; "Jade ; Cancer Battle ...
Advantages: good looking cast Disadvantages: depressing storyline/ending
Closer was one of those films which I'd wanted to watch for ages for several reasons:
a) I've always has a soft spot for Clive Owen
b) I have always thought Julia Roberts is a good actress
c) I'd never seen Jude Law in a film and had heard a lot of good things about him.
Hmmm, points a), b) and c) above will be addressed later in this review!
CAST, CREW & STUFF LIKE THAT
=
Pretty much an all star cast with Clive Owen, Julia Roberts, Jude Law and Natalie Portman. There are no supporting cast members that appear more than once and for more than a moment so it's not worth mentioning them!
Closer was directed by Mike Nichols and was developed from a play written by PatrickMarber who also wrote the screenplay for the film. The film was produced by Cary Brokaw and John Calley and the original ...

Love and sex are like politics: it's not what you say that matters still less what you mean but what you do. Patrick Marber understands this perfectly and in Closer" he has written one of the best plays of sexual politics in the language: it is right up there with Williams' "Streetcar" Mamet's "Oleanna" Albee's "Virginia Woolf" Pinter's "Old Times" and Hare's "Skylight". ("The Sunday Times") "Patrick Marber's searing follow-up to "Dealer's Choice" establishes him as the leading playwright of his generation." ("Independent on Sunday")"
