Advantages: cheap, comprehensive, good telephone service Disadvantages: no website for quotes, very annoying appointment system
I chose to to CIS for my home contents insurance because they were recommended to me by two separate people - one being my financial advisor! I found it a little annoying that I couldn't get an online quote, and the number was not very easy to find either, so I would say of all the quotations I had, this was the most difficult to obtain, and if I had not had the recommendation, I may well not have pursued it.
However, I eventually ... ...and quickly took me through the quotation process. The price was much better than all other quotes I had looked at and I felt that what I was getting in terms of cover suited my personal circumstances well. The sales lady was very patient while I asked for various different quotes (stuff like getting my mobile phone covered as well), although the computer would not accept my last address as 1) it could not find it and 2) I had only lived there 13 ... more
I chose to to CIS for my home contents insurance because they were recommended to me by two separate people - one being my financial advisor! I found it a little annoying that I couldn't get an online quote, and the number was not very easy to find either, so I would say of all the quotations I had, this was the most difficult to obtain, and if I had not had the recommendation, I may well not have pursued it.
However, I eventually got through to a very nice girl who was helpful, and quickly took me through the quotation process. The price was much better than all other quotes I had looked at and I felt that what I was getting in terms of cover suited my personal circumstances well. The sales lady was very patient while I asked for various different quotes (stuff like getting my mobile phone covered as well), although the computer would not accept my last address as 1) it could not find it and 2) I had only lived there 13 months. They told me they would have to send an advisor to meet with me and go through it all in person due to this problem, I have to say I found this a little inconvenient but we set a time and although I was reluctant to wait 4 days (leaving my home uninsured in the meantime), I agreed.
The appointed time (6.15 pm on friday evening) rolled around and by 6.45 no one had appeared. I called CIS to ask what was going on and when he might be expected as I had plans for the evening, and was a bit fed up with waiting around! They told me they thought there had been an error in the booking and no advisor was on the way. I asked if he could be contacted to check on his whereabouts and they said they had no number for him. I found this extraordinary.
After a long debate with the sales assistant and a manager, where I made the fact that their inefficency effectively jeopardised my home contents (as there was apparently no way I could get hold of any insurance until the advisor could call on me, at earliest the following Tuesday), they agreed to arrange another appointment. They said I was welcome to look elsewhere, but of course the computer software was very probably the same, and I would have to start afresh on the appointment scenario - probably meaning it would be even longer before I could be set up with my insurance.
Whilst i was wholly dissatisfied with what i view as an extremely unprofessional handling of this rather unnecessary appointment, I have to say that a gentleman called Dan did indeed call me this morning to arrange a meeting. He is meeting me at my workplace and assures me we can set up the insurance there and then. He also apologised and assured me the situation is being looked into. I have to say I am feeling much more positive about the Co-Op service after this. I guess alot will depend on the service I receive tomorrow, but I feel that the Co-Op have been better tahn most companies in handling my complaint and restoring my faith in them
Advantages: Prompt attention to claims, personal service through local agents, and fast settlement Disadvantages: none I can think of
I have been insuring my home contents with CIS for many years, and I have always found them to offer excellent value for money.
Of course, the real test is in making a claim, and over the years I have unfortunately had to make several.
The largest claim was when the house became flooded overnight by a fault on the washing machine. The water had completly submerged the kitchen floor, and spread all through the downstairs rooms. My 3 year son noticed ... ...the bedroom to tell me that I would need water-boots on downstairs. Luckily I had a vacuum cleaner which could remove water and I spent most of the day salvaging things like books, and lifting the soaked carpet.
I phoned CIS and the next day an insurance assessor called. I expected him to try to limit CIS's liability, and was very surprised when he suggested that I also claim for the fitted cupboards in the kitchen where water had saoked into the ...

Advantages: Friendly advisers, competitive, comprehensive cover Disadvantages: Slow to receive the quote
...as the cover was very people friendly. I would advise if anyone wants to take out Co-operative Insurance Society cover that they should call the Service Centre early enough to receive the quote as they seem very helpful and competitive but unfortunately the post was too slow for me. ...

Advantages: cheap Disadvantages: battle to get the service you've paid for!
I was insured with these people for many years, they always seemed pleasant to deal with and their premiums were the most competitive for my circumstances.
Then what we all won't happen did, I was burgled and a load of stuff was taken.
In a nutshell they quibbled and argued about every single thing they had to pay out for.
A bottle of expensive aftershave? They wanted a recipt. It was an Xmas gift - and, of course, the person who gave it to me ... ...from a friend? Not covered because they weren't mine.
And so on etc. Eventually they did pay up, but only when I got a friend with a law degree to write a very heavy letter threatening to sue.
That's the trouble with home insurance, you just don't know how good it is until the worst happens - and then it's too late ...

Advantages: Very good claims proceedure Disadvantages: not easily contactable
I first heard of CIS insurance through my parents. My Father was looking for insurance for my mum and stumbled across CIS in the pursuit of the cheapest quote. This was around 10 years ago now but the company at the time was the cheapest.
I followed suit when I passed my test - although to keep the cost lower I insured the car in my mum's name (as she was older)?. However the downside to this through insuring with CIS is that the car needs to be registered in the policyholder's name. So my car is now registered under my mum's name!
The quote was reasonable, bearing in mind that the policy covered any driver of any age. In addition my partner had 3 speeding points on his license - CIS stated that they ignore the first speeding offence so this did not affect the quote price - BONUS!
However, within 3 weeks of changing my car I ...
Advantages: Reasonable premiums. Good glass cover Disadvantages: Its car insurance, therefore its an unwanted expense isn't it
it does help to have this service. In no way has my premium been affected my two glass claims, indeed my insurance did come down at last renewal.
I may shop around again at renewal but as I am happy with the service, why waste time. Maybe when I surpass 25 (I’m 24 still) then I may do so…….. ...
Advantages: cheapest, loveley people in Harlow office, Disadvantages: none I've found yet
A word of warning to all you motorists out there. Do you know just how much your ‘No Claims Bonus’ is worth? Before I go on, if yours is unprotected please stop reading this opinion and go and protect it now!!
My Yaris GLS is now insured with CIS (The Co-op) after more ringing round than you can imagine. Here is my story…
My last car was a Mazda MX3 V6, a bit different I know! Whilst in the work car park I reversed into another car that was speeding back from lunch as she was late – it was deemed to be my fault, so I paid my excess, felt annoyed and thought nothing more about it. At the end of that year I was changing my car to a Toyota Yaris, I was insuring the Mazda through ‘Performance Direct’ at a cost of about £450 per year. (33-year-old woman, no accidents etc) I phoned around ...
