A word of warning to all you motorists out there. Do you know just how much your ‘No Claims Bonus’ is worth? Before I go on, if yours is unprotected please stop reading this opinion and go and protect it now!!
My Yaris GLS is now insured with CIS (The Co-op) after more ringing round than you can imagine. Here is my story…
My last car was a Mazda MX3 V6, a bit different I know! Whilst in the work car park I reversed into another car that was speeding back from lunch as she was late – it was deemed to be my fault, so I paid my excess, felt annoyed and thought nothing more about it. At the end of that year I was changing my car to a Toyota Yaris, I was insuring the Mazda through ‘Performance Direct’ at a cost of about £450 per year. (33-year-old woman, no accidents etc) I phoned around for a quote on the Yaris, and got ones ranging from £600 up to £900. I couldn’t understand it. I was trading in my sporty model for...well...a little shop along thing (which I love don’t get me wrong – see op).
When I tried CIS, recommended by our work’s receptionist, as I had been telling everyone this story at the time I was so exasperated by it all. I rang them and they gave me a quote of £500 and said if I hung on a moment they may be able to do better and took a few more details. I enquired with the young man, who was very helpful, what on earth this rise was all about, “oh” he said “I can see you’ve had an accident and your no claims discount has gone” I could not believe it was worth so much!!
Anyway, he said that CIS took the whole picture into account, driving for 10 years this was first accident, accident was deemed my fault but they could see the other person wasn’t blameless and for the fact I was over 30 they gave me an extra discount (now that’s a first, liking being over 30!!) My quote came out at £437 for the year, which I took, my documents etc all arrived promptly and correct. As yet I have had no cause (nor do not want one) to call on them and so cannot comment on that part of their service.
A few days later my old insurance sent out the renewal for the Mazda (which I now did not own – thank goodness) it was £1,200 for the year!!
This year, after one year with CIS my renewal came through at £250 – now that is a proper amount for a 34-year-old woman to pay for her little run-around.
...Have YOU protected that bonus yet?…no?…go on, Do it now!

Protected NCD is so important, good op. I used to work for the CIS 3 years ago. Which office?agent are you insured with? As long as you have a reliable agent there should be no problems with claims or renewals! Amanda..

Great opinion. My hubby had the same thing happen to him, years ago. We now try to protect all bonuses. Thanks. Louise

mine is "protected" which is just as well as I add to make a claim last month via CGNU! a large amount! and phew! they paid up! I also use the max. NCD at time of joinmg as I had quotes from 2500 TO 300! Good advice, hope co-op are quite competitive and efficient with claims process too!
