I first heard of CIS insurance through my parents. My Father was looking for insurance for my mum and stumbled across CIS in the pursuit of the cheapest quote. This was around 10 years ago now but the company at the time was the cheapest.
I followed suit when I passed my test - although to keep the cost lower I insured the car in my mum's name (as she was older)…. However the downside to this through insuring with CIS is that the car needs to be registered in the policyholder's name. So my car is now registered under my mum's name!
The quote was reasonable, bearing in mind that the policy covered any driver of any age. In addition my partner had 3 speeding points on his license - CIS stated that they ignore the first speeding offence so this did not affect the quote price - BONUS!
However, within 3 weeks of changing my car I had
a close encounter with a Taxi - he drove straight into my rear end!!!
So my very first claim procedure began - I called CIS and they promptly sent out the claim form. On completion of this there was a delay but not due to the insurance company but due to the taxi driver not reporting the accident to his insurance company. On hounding the taxi firm they finally reported it and CIS went into action on the compensation claim.
The damage to my car was completed within a week and I received a courtesy car for the time I was without mine (as I have fully comprehensive insurance). I only had to pay an excess of £50 which was fabulous, not sure of many companies that offer this any more! Once they receive all the details from the other insurer, and a solicitor was assigned the claim began. I received my compensation a year later.
This was a little claim; my partner has had cause to claim via CIS on numerous occasions (One ongoing at the moment). His previous one was for a motorbike accident where he was hit by a lorry. CIS sent a representative to us to look at the damage on the bike and to assess the likelihood of a repair - which was a relief as the bike was not drivable and we did not have the means to get the bike to the garage.
Within a week we had received the report that the bike was a total write off. We were concerned as the bike was less than a year old and was on finance so we though we would be left with interest payments…. But NO - CIS paid the whole lot off so they actually paid out more than the market value for the bike.
They assigned a solicitor for the compensation claim which proved as efficient and friendly as the solicitor I dealt with.
Now my partner is going through another claim, bigger than the last but they are still as efficient as ever. This is another solicitor, but all have been or are competent. There is the usual paperwork that goes with solicitors - for those of you that have not experienced it - that's LOTS… but the paperwork to CIS is minimal… they simply need to know a small amount of information to get your claim dealt with.
Personally now when my policy comes up for renewal I don't even consider looking else where. The only fault I would say there is with CIS is trying to contact the general admin office in Gloucester - they never seem to answer the phone! The claims centre in Bristol is great; they are friendly and always answer the phone.
This to me is a little blip in the service and will not affect my opinion of them.
Indeed my partner did look around when his policy came up for renewal and found cheaper quotes. On thinking about it he decided to pay the extra and stay with CIS as we know that upon a claim the company is fantastic and cannot be faulted. They are speedy, efficient and have very good solicitors working for them.
This side of the insurance should not be under-estimated, an accident is bad enough to cope with, and the last thing you want to find out is that your insurance company is inefficient when you need to make a claim! Therefore I would recommend CIS, even if the quote is a little more expensive!
I only hope that you never need to see this side of the insurance company - I wish you all SAFE JOURNEYS!
I have received renewal document and CIS have instructed that they are no longer offering 'any driver' policies and only offering policies on a named drive bases.... At the present it doesn't look liek they will change the premium as they are only asking for basic details - name of driver, age, number of years licence held and relationship to policyholder... and conviction details!
They have not asked for previous accident data. I will update this again should they ask for more details!
Be careful what insurer you go for, a lot of things you would presume come included actually arent.

Blimey, I think you both need to be careful, that's a lot of claims!

Good review! Just goes to show Motor Legal Protection is deffinatly worth having! I've never tried CIS i've always thought they're a bit behind the times. I will give them a go on renewal. Hopefully the rest of their clients haven't claimed as often as you have or their premiums will be through the roof!!
