Advantages: loud, immobiliser included Disadvantages: expensive
This is supposedly one of the best on the market and our car (mitsubishi lancer evo V) already had one fitted and included an immobiliser. It was easy to use and on testing it was loud when set off. I am told it cost £350 to install so semmed to be rather expensive but we hadn't had to fork out for it!
When activated, any opening of doors, windows or bonnet would set off the alarm. The immobiliser had to dis-activated differently once ... ...not start.
All in all it seemed to be a very good alarm but it turns out we were proved wrong.
On Monday night the alarm went off at approximately 11.45pm thus causing my partner to jump out of bed and run down the stairs but no one was around and everything seemed to be intact so he reset and came back to bed. When activated, any opening of doors, windows or bonnet would set off the alarm. The immobiliser had to dis-activated differently once inside the car and unless done so the car would not start. All in all it seemed to be a very good alarm but it turns out we were proved wrong.
On Monday night the alarm went off at approximately 11.45pm thus causing my partner to jump out of bed and run down the stairs but no one was around and everything seemed to be intact so he reset and came back to bed. We were woken at 5 am by a neighbour and found the car stripped of it's bonnet, front bumper, headlights and some engine parts - it was unbelieveable really, it had all taken place on our driveway right in front of the house - i have to say they had some balls!!
My partner couldn't understand why the alarm hadn't gone off and thought at first that he hadn't activated it after turning it off the evening before, but on closer inspection we realised that the side indicator on the drivers side had been removed and the alarm had been disconnected from here along with the wires to the horn being cut. He couldn't believe it and quite frankly neither could I - £350 and it was beaten!
We hadn't had it installed so hadn't really checked out the alarm properly so my advice is make sure you do before you pay, ask how easy it is to over ride and weigh up whether it's worth that kind of expense. Yes a good alarm brings down your insurance but will it stop the car being stolen or damaged which will cause your insurance to rise next time?
Advantages: fast, family car Disadvantages: parts can be expensive if an import
one of the cheapest we found!!
The other disadvantage is that as the car parts can be quite expensive they are quite attractive to the thieves out there - we were woken up on tuesday morning by our next door neighbour to say someone had just run off with the bumper - when we got downstairs the car had been stripped of it's bonnet, front bumper, headlights, dump valve, K & N and the wiring loom had been cut. The cobracat1alarm which cost £350 to install had been dismantled through the side repeater on the drivers side!
The car had been parked on our driveway right in front of the house and it was off within 5 hours without us hearing a thing - no scratches, no yanking, it was all professionally removed and evry screw, nut and bolt was taken.
Also when you insure the car check with your insurance that they have a garage that can ...
