Through a lens clear, dark..err darker

Advantages: Simplicity and ease of use.
Disadvantages: Costs can rapidly mount up.

I have noticed that on some of my digital photographs of landscapes that I have had to turn up the brightness to see what is in the foreground. This has resulted in a loss of colour and definition in any sky featured, giving the impression that the picture is overexposed there and underexposed on the ground. I find that it can be a problem with some digital cameras due to the way that the light sensor works. I have used the screw in circular Polarizer and U.V. Skylight filters with out success. So I wanted something different. What I found was this Cokin system. This system was developed by the French professional photographer Jean Coquin. He developed a system that has as he says "simplicity, rapidity of use and versatile enough to leave plenty of room for individual inspiration and creativity". First you have a screw in ...

Riemann P20 once a day sun filter

Advantages: Don't burn, only use once a day, not greasy
Disadvantages: Expensive (but worth it).

I've always been a fan of Soltan suncream as it rubs in easily and doesn't smell too bad for suncream. However after using Riemann P20 I'm never going back...! I have quite fair skin and no matter which sun cream I use I always burn a bit. With this I spent two weeks in the Caribbean and only burnt once - the day I used normal suncream! I put this on in a morning after having a shower. It takes 15minutes to become active which was usually by the time I got out of the bathroom! Some older versions take 90 minutes so watch out for this if you're getting it off Amazon. It's like a watery oil but once it's dry it's not at all greasy like normal suncream and doesn't cause eyes to sting half way through the day! It does smell quite strong of alcohol when you put it on but again once it's dry it doesn't smell at all. On the days I ...

Review of Riemann P20 P20 Once a Day Sun Filter

True creative photography.

Advantages: Fantastic Control over composition
Disadvantages: Easy to get carried away

I have been using the cokin P-series filters for a while now. For anyone who doesn't know what they are, let me explain. Cokin filters are square or rectangular sheets of plastic and sometimes glass, with various colours, gradients or other effects on them. You mount the filters into a holder, which can hold up to three filters (or one if using a wide angle version) and a polarising filter. The filter holder is then mounted to your lens using whats known as an adapter ring. This is a metal ring with a thread size the same as your lens, which the holder clips onto in a really simple manner. The beauty is, rather than having to buy filters for each lens you own, you only buy the filters once, and then an adapter ring (only a couple of pounds) for each lens you own, saving a substantial amount of money. Many filter effects can now ...
