ED'S AWESOME BEEF CASSEROLE (Serves 6+)
You Will Need:
1 x Sachet Of Coleman's Beef Casserole 500g of Braising Steak (approx £2.50) 1 x Large White Onion 3 x Cloves Garlic 3 x Carrots 2 x Sticks Of Celery 12 x Button Mushrooms 1 x Potato (peeled) 1 x Sweet Potato (peeled) 1 x Tin Of Chopped Tomatoes 1 x Large Glass Red Wine (Cheap House Wine) Salt & Pepper Casserole Dish or Slow Cooker
If you have a slow cooker set this to 'Low' now. If you have a convential oven set it to it's lowest setting. Remember the slower you cook the casserole the more tender the meat will be & the overall taste will be much better than if cooked relatively quickly (i.e: 1-2 hours)
1) Start by seasoning the beef with some salt & pepper. Now 'brown' the beef in a saucepan with a little olive or vegetable oil & one finely choppped clove of garlic, just cook until the beef has some colour (approx 3 mins) Keep pan on a medium/high heat.
2) Add Beef to slow cooker or casserole dish including all the juices from the meat.
3) Dice the onion, fry in fryingpan for approx 4 mins until colour changes slightly, now add the red wine & cook until all the juice has evaporated (approx 6 mins) now add the chopped tin of tomatoes until warmed through.
4) Add onion & tom mix to casserole/slow cooker.
5) Chop celery, potato, sweet potato, mushrooms, celery & two cloves of garlic (unchopped but crushed) Chop the Veg into nice chunky pieces. (not too chunky but not too small)
6) Add veg to casserole with contents of Coleman's sachet to casserole dish/slow cooker & stir.
7) Season with salt & pepper
Now the juices from the meat, chopped toms & wine is almost enough for this dish - My rule of thumb is to cover all the ingredients in 3/4 liquid so top up with boiling water if neccessary. (Once the veg cooks it will break down & create it's own juices)
NOTE: Make sure all your ingredients are hot before adding to the dish.
Of course you can add almost any root veg to this dish, but from my experience the veg above are perfect.
Cook in slow cooker on 'Low' for 4-7 hours (overnight is perfect) Cook in Covential Oven in covered casserole dish for 2-3 hours on lowest setting & in middle of oven.
Once cooked you can put in freezer bags once it has cooled down & frozen for future eating.
I hope you like my recipe & please let me know if you have tried it - I gurantee you will be coming back for more & more &...
Advantages: Easy to use, No fuss,Great for a family meal Disadvantages: None
Quite a while ago I was roaming around the supermarket, knowing I didn't have much money with me, but needed to impress my dad who was coming round for tea that evening. My dads from yorkshire and loves his traditional style of cooking, vegetables, any kind of potato with some sort of hearty meat in a warming sauce or gravy, that kind of thing! I spotted the packet on the shelf, the picture looked quite tasty, and the instructions were really easy ... ...I got some diced beef and a selection of chopped vegetables, mixed up the cassarole sauce and mixed in with beef and vegetables, popped it all into a glass oven dish, 200c for about 40 mins.
I served it with some mash and onions and it went down a treat.
This is great for when guests are over as your not stuck in the kitchen because you can leave it mingle instead and its a great meal if your on a budget too! ...

Quick review of Colman's Beef Casserole
Cook 1.5 pounds of aberdeen angus braising steak - cubed , for 3 hours over a low heat, to include 8 oz of mushrooms, and two packets of this sauce mix.
Roll out 1 block of ready made puff pastry. Heat oven to 190 degrees.
Cut the rolled pastry in half. Bake these two pastry lids in the hot oven for 18 mins until golden brown and well risen.
Serve the meat and mushroom mix on to warmed plates, and place a pastry lid over the top.
Serve with freshly cooked vegetables, and potatos boiled in their skins.
Just delicious!! ...

Advantages: Tasty, Simple to make, makes a meal out of so few ingredients. Disadvantages: Takes 1 and 1/2 hour to cook
Having tried various other Colman's sauces (Colmans Chicken Curry being my favourite!) I decided to give the Beef and Ale Casserole sauce a go.
Price and availability:
--------------------------
They were on sale for 79p at my local Sainsbury's and you can find them in all good supermarkets. They often do 3 for 2 offers on the packet sauces too so look out for those.
Packaging:
--------------
It is a 45g packet that has a silver foil type lining to ensure maximum freshness of the product.
Ingredients:
----------------
It is a dry mix, that has a combination of blended thyme, spices and ale.
How to cook:
----------------
You will need to buy 450g (1lb) of lean braising steak, one medium sized onion and 115g mushrooms. You cube the beef and slice the onion and mushrooms, placing them in an ovenproof ...
Advantages: Very quick and easy to make Disadvantages: None
Having a 6 month old baby means I don't always have the time to cook really nice meals from scratch, I seem to be forever sticking chips and pies etc in the oven so I decided to buy some packets that would enable me to make some nice casseroles etc
When I was looking through the available sauce mixes I spotted the ColmansBeef & Ale sauce, the picture on the front of the packet looked very nice so I bought one and cooked it that evening.
The Packet
The top half of the packet is brown with the Yellow and red Colman's logo, beneath the logo you have a picture of what the dish looks like (meat mushrooms in a sauce) then below that you have the contents (for one meal).
On the reverse of the packet you have the ingredients, how to cook instructions and the nutritional information. It also has a something special section that gives you ...
