When my daughter turned five, I decided it was time to buy her a vibrator - and it’s so good, now the whole family uses it.
I am talking, of course, about her Colgate Actibrush battery-powered toothbrush.
We were going through that awkward five-year-old stage where she wouldn’t brush her teeth, or wash her face, or have her hair washed or brushed.
On a family trip to Sainsbury’s, we saw a rather snazzy Harry Pottered-up version of the standard Actibrush and she fell in love with it (the film had just come out).
She promised on pain of death that this fabulous new toothbrush would encourage her to improve her oral hygiene, so into the trolley it went, along with some very snazzy pink kids’ toothpaste.
The “adult” versions of the Actibrush are white or translucent, but Colgate makes a range of decorated brushes for children, called Actibrush “Bzzz”. The one we chose is bright blue, with red on and off buttons, a lime green brush section and a nice picture of Harry Potter on the front, on his Nimbus in mid-quidditch, about the catch the snitch.
Other designs include an alien and one with flowers on, and a version with each of the main Harry Potter characters on it.
The Actibrush Bzzz usually costs £12.99, but it was on special offer and we got it for £8.99, which was a bit of a bargain.
After my daughter used the brush a few times, we thought it seemed like a great idea, and decided we all wanted an electric toothbrush. Rather than buying one each, I popped to Sainsbury’s again and bought a pack of three replacement heads at £3.99. We now have one head each (which are thoughtfully colour-coded) and use the same toothbrush body – what a money saver!
The Actibrush takes two LR6 AA 1.5 volt batteries and these last several weeks, even with all of us using it.
I was a tad concerned about using an electric brush because I have sensitive gums that tend to bleed easily, but I needn’t have worried. The brush heads are very soft and the quick movement of the head means that you get a really excellent clean without exerting pressure.
The brush head rotates back and forth very quickly, but isn’t one of those that move in and out as well, sadly. However, it is adequately powerful to does provide an excellent clean for all of us.
The brush head is round and very small, so you are able to reach right into all the little nooks and crannies and clean each tooth individually. It is just as well the brush head is small because I have a very well-developed gag reflex, so I find it difficult to stuff very large objects into my mouth ;o)
The handle part is easy to hold onto, even in my daughter’s little hands, and she has no trouble manoeuvring it around. The only downside is that it is easy to accidentally press the off button in mid-brush as the controls are prominently displayed on the handle part. This, however, is a small gripe.
I had just given up smoking when we started using this brush and one of the pieces of advice I was given was to brush my teeth when I had a cigarette craving. So, as you can imagine, I was brushing my teeth about 20 times a day!
Using the Actibrush makes cleaning your teeth a pleasure. Your whole mouth feels very tingly and squeaky clean afterward, and you really feel that you have got into all the little cracks and removed all the debris. It is lovely and stimulating in the morning and makes you feel nicely woken and clean.
I use it in conjunction with a stain removing toothpaste and have found that the horrid nicotine stains are gone and everyday staining is also kept to a minimum (I am a tea addict and also love red wine).
My daughter loves her brush, and surprisingly, loves the fact that we all share it (although she does tend to tell everyone we use the same toothbrush and I do have to explain to disgusted mums at school that we all have separate brush heads!) It is no longer a fight to get her to clean her teeth and she has learned to use the brush very well and is quite effective at using it properly on her own now.
I don’t know if the children’s version of the Actibrush is less powerful than the adult one. I certainly haven’t found it lacking in power, and am really pleased with the results I have had. The brush heads are softer though and that suits me with my bleeding gums!
All in all, I would definitely recommend the Actibrush, particularly if you are a parent having troubles getting your little ones to brush regularly. It certainly did the trick for us. Also, it is just the ticket and not too harsh if you are an adult with sensitive gums.
Advantages: cheap, cleans teeth with little effort Disadvantages: speed can cause problems if you're not careful!
...it's actually battery operated. The Colgate Actibrush takes two AA batteries, which, unlike most products, come with the toothbrush. At £12.99 for the toothbrush and the batteries you can't complain, especially when considering what a good job it does!
So what makes it stand out from other brushes? To be honest, for me it was the price. I'd been looking for an electric toothbrush for a while, but wasn't willing to pay extortionate prices - it's ... ...in the first 24 months, Colgate will send you a free replacement and pay the postage costs, assuming, that is, that you can provide details of when and where you purchased it. Cleaning the toothbrush is also easy - just rinse the head and handle with warm water, separate the two sections (head and body) and clean the area that connects them with warm water - simple!
As with all toothbrushes, brush heads should be replaced every three months - extra ...

...opinion, this is where the Colgate Actibrush comes in! When I ramble, do I ramble or what?
It is still an alkaline battery (2 x AA’s) affair. There is no shaver socket in our bathroom, so a rechargeable machine wouldn’t be much use, and NiCad batteries are a disposal problem, what with Cadmium being a “trifle” toxic.
The handle feels nicely balanced and there has been no attempt to make it ergonomically asymmetric, with the ensuing pis……sorry alienation ... ...and off buttons, which means there is nothing to hold down, making your only job guiding the thing. This is quite important, since you only need to guide it – if you press with the same pressure as a manual toothbrush, you risk wearing your enamel away, as most toothpastes are mildly abrasive to get your teeth white. Worn-out teeth seem a high price to pay for being able to smile! The brush is circular like the Crest machine, but it only oscillates ...

...no more, thanks to the Colgate Actibrush and Colgate Total toothpaste.
The brush was a gift from a friend who is a rep for Colgate (Thanks Jayne) which she bestowed upon me with a bagful of other assorted dental hygiene products last week in return for a favour involving my digital camera, but the less said about that the better. LOL!

Advantages: Simple, quick, and very effective tooth care Disadvantages: Can get messy, and no battery life indicator
I bought the Colgate Acti-brush back in April, as I was fed-up with the old fashioned brush. They didn’t last very long with me, the bristles would be all flattened in no time, and they are not exactly cheap for what they are. I’m also rather lazy, and the constant effort required morning and night was becoming a concern. Then I saw the Colgate Acti-brush. Wow I thought, only £12. I’ve seen many other electric brushes costing £30 ... ...be some guarantee of quality; Colgate produces it, a well known, and familiar brand name in the world of dental care. I’ve later discovered that it was the first battery-operated brushes to come to the market. For your £12 you get one brush attachment, the motor/handle section, and 2 AA batteries to get you started straight away.
To begin with it took a little getting used to. You seem to want to brush back and forwards by habit, and just ...

Advantages: Portable, convenient, small head, made my mouth feel fresh Disadvantages: Only rotates one way, not really suitable for sharing, doesn't tell you when the batteries are getting low
...all smug, having bought my Colgate Actibrush, she told me it wasn't that one that she meant, it was the Braun Oral B one! I was SURE she said the Colgate! Oh well, I had already spent my hard earned dosh on this one, so I decided to give it a fair trial!
The main selling point on this toothbrush when it first came out was that it was the first battery operated toothbrush - i.e. it uses two AA batteries, and you don't need to plug it in or charge ... ...you don't have to worry about wall mounting it or anything so that you can plug it in. There have since been others brought onto the market, but I figured that if this was the original it was probably also the best!
The brush itself costs around £12 or £13 and comes complete with one brush head and two AA batteries, so it is very good value. Replacement heads are available in packs of two for £5. The brush heads last around three months, and the ...

When I buy a present for somebody I like to try and get them something that they wouldn’t normally buy for themselves and also something that is useful, so when it was my fiancés birthday at the beginning of this month I decided to buy him an electric toothbrush as part of his present.
Having already got a ColgateActibrush myself I knew that it was either a case of buy him a whizzy toy of his own or risk losing ownership of mine, as he had been eyeing it up for some time and it wouldn’t be much longer before he hijacked it.

After using my colgateactibrush for many years (perhaps a few too many years), I was rather dismayed one day while brushing happily away when the head fell off and the insides came out... Oh well, what can you expect, it was verging on becoming an ebay collectable.
I figured that it wasn't such a bad thing, toothbrush technology has advanced a long way since the days of the old electric brushes that pretty much spun a few bristles around your mouth and eat disposable batteries like they were going out of fashion. Recently there's been all kinds of advertising telling us about ultra-sonic pulses, bristles that change colour, even brushes with built in timers so you know when you've reached the recommended 3 minutes brushing. A visit to the electrical store proved that the toothbrush market hadn't just advanced since I last bought one ...
