Advantages Great for teeth and gums

Disadvantages None

I am quite good when it comes to oral hygiene, I like to brush my teeth regularly, I use mouthwash most days and in addition to that I also use dental floss. This was a habit I got into when I was younger thanks to my mum and I have never really grown out of it. In fact, regular flossing is said to reduce the incidence of heart disease as according to an article I read, flossing is correlated with greater longevity potentially as a result of the prevention of gum inflammation. It can also help to prevent gum disease, halitosis and dental cavities.

So, there really is not reason not to floss as it is so beneficial and so easy to do. I buy Colgate dental floss which comes in a little plastic case with a flip top lid to keep it safe and clean. Dental floss is basically a long string of nylon fibres that are wrapped together. This is then wound in a ring and encased in the plastic case. In order to use it you just pull a small amount of floss out that you need and then pull it against a small protected blade to cut it. Different people obviously have different methods of using floss but I like to wind it around my fingers and then help it inbetween each tooth and pull softly but with a bit of pressure. This dental floss I find is quite gentle on your teeth. I have used other fibres that are quite rough and sometimes cause my gums to bleed but this floss is nice and smooth and pulls through each tooth well. By using my fingers to gently guide the floss I can pull away quite a bit of plaque off my teeth which my toothbrush does not always get.

The best thing about floss is that it can really get to parts of the mouth that your toothbrush can't and really gets into the little cracks that are really hard to get to otherwise. This is because the string is so thin and can slip between teeth and then be pulled out again. This floss is also great at getting out food particles between your teeth that you would otherwise need a toothpick for. The floss has a nice minty taste to it so it's just like an extension of your toothpaste really. Each little case costs £2.81 and will last for quite a few weeks so is a good product for your all round dental health.
