Your teeth I am sure you will agree need a lot of looking after, especially those of you who have a sweet tooth. Colgate has been helping us look after our teeth since 1837 although the company has been around for much longer mainly producing soaps. Their first toothpaste was sold in jars and was emulated by many other company’s, Colgate introduced the first tube toothpaste in 1908 and have worked hard ever since to keep improving their products. The company which is now known as Colgate-Palmolive due to its merger with Palmolive-Peet in 1928 is one of the few around who can continually claim their product is an improvement on the last and be correct.
As well as caring for all sorts of grown up needs with their toothpastes such as sensitive teeth and the brightening of smokers teeth, they also have continued to improve their kids range looking after our little ones teeth also. A good dental health regime is one of the best things you can install into your kids life and it’s easier with Colgate’s help.
Colgate smiles is the latest in the Colgate kids range and comes in three age groups, 0-2, 2-6 and 6years+. The Colgate smiles 0-2 formula is like the others developed for its specific needs with the help of dentists it contains less fluoride and is designed for kids during their teething stage it also has a softer mint taste but is still clinically proven to reduce cavities.
The 2-6 range is designed to help care for milk teeth and contains a medium fluoride dosage and a slightly stronger minty taste but still mild. Finally the toothpaste that will see your kids through to their adult years is the 6 years plus offering. This one has a higher dosage of fluoride again but still not quite as high as that of an adult paste and is designed to care for permanent teeth in their early stages of development.
As well as providing us with excellent toothpastes Colgate also provide fact sheets full of very useful information when it comes to brushing. I am sure we all know how to take care of our own teeth but as we get older and become parents can we really all claim to know how to look after our kids teeth? A little advice is always helpful.
Colgate’s fact sheet for kids goes as follows:
Brushing a toddler`s teeth: use a very small almost pea size amount of 0-2 Colgate smiles paste and a brush with very soft bristles, brush the outside and the inside of the teeth with the bristles angled towards the gum line. Do this twice a day for around 2-3 minutes each time.
Brushing 2-6 year olds teeth: this requires exactly the same process as above although Colgate recommend you slowly introduce flossing around the age of four as this will help to remove very small particles of food left after brushing which can sometimes cause the most damage to teeth. Kids at this age will also quite enjoy tongue brushing which also benefits good oral health.
Brushing from the age of 6 onwards: although the brushing times and methods stay the same the amount of toothpaste should be increased slightly to around half an adults dose from the age of six until adulthood. By the age of 6 the child should be brushing for themselves but we should still give a little help to make sure of a thorough job. The brush will now have harder bristles but still softer than an adults. By the age of 8 your child should be both brushing and flossing for themselves.
My son is now four years old and we have reared him on Colgate toothpastes and we always try to follow recommendations from Colgate too. However we have not introduced flossing yet as we feel it’s too soon and on the one occasion we tried he was none too impressed. There didn’t seem to be any point forcing him into flossing and risking upsetting his otherwise happy brushing experience, so although the guidelines are set by Colgate and others you still have to make decisions for yourself as you go on. You will better know what stage your child is at than anyone else and can there for judge what is best for them.
Colgate smiles is a well presented toothpaste which is designed to appeal to children and encourage them to brush and in my opinion it works. The toothpaste I am currently using is the 2-6 years one and it comes in a tube which is mainly green in colour with cartoon drawings of kids at play on it, my son loves to hold and look at the tube as we brush his teeth for him and it has to stand where he can see it when its his turn to brush. Having used this paste myself a couple of times when my own has ran out I can verify that although mint flavoured it is much softer mint than the adult paste.
So what’s the cost of this innovative paste? Well it’s actually very reasonable at just under or just over one pound for a 50ml tube depending on where you buy it. When you consider both asda and Tesco’s own make options are around 90p then better to stick with the experts I believe. I for one won’t be switching pastes to save 10p and my son would never forgive me if he didn’t have his favourite tube when brushing.
As a long term Colgate user myself I would probably have chosen them to care for my sons teeth any way but I am very, very impressed with their range of pastes for kids and their research into how best to care for youngsters teeth and would there for never consider a change.
Although the ingredients look like a couple of lines of random words to me and probably most others, they may be handy for those with allergies and such like thus I have included them. Surprisingly enough the ingredients between not only different brands of toothpaste but between Colgate’s own brands vary quite dramatically. Colgate also I am sure you are aware supply tooth brushes both for kids and adults, I am not so sure how much difference the brush you use actually makes and as their brushes can be expensive it is worth while shopping around and making your choice carefully.
I have used many of the Colgate adult toothpastes including, Colgate total advanced gel, Colgate total whitening paste and Colgate total mint stripe gel and have been happy with them all, I am now glad to say I am also happy with this kids range and would have no reservations on recommending them to others. I am sure you agree that your kids deserve the best start in life and in the oral health department that I believe is provided by Colgate.
Colgate smiles can be found in supermarkets and convenience stores as well as chemists. If you are just starting out with a brushing regime for your first child or are perhaps not happy with the paste you are using then give Colgate a try and if you can get hold of one pick up the Colgate fact sheet it certainly made me aware of things I didn’t know before. The first time I purchased this paste it was from boots and that was where the fact sheet came from too, it was free and sat at the end of the toothpaste isle. So give boots a try if you are after the fact sheet although I am sure they will be supplied other places too.
I hope I have managed to leave you in no doubt about what Colgate smiles is or what it can do to help you and your family without boring you too much with details, and thanks for reading another of my reviews!

:) Colgate smiles :)
We probably all know and recognise Colgate as a toothpaste brand, ranging from Colgate Oxygen to Colgate sensitive. Colgate smiles is a product specifically designed to attract the children audience, with some suited to 0-2 year olds, some to 2-6, and then 6+. ...look at a tube of Colgate Smiles toothpaste.
Colgate Smiles has been formulated especially for children, and having read so much about this brand I decided I wanted to see the stars for myself! Tesco is selling the 3 varieties at 99pence a tube, and having listened to a Mum discussing which toothpaste her son wanted, I decided to buy a tube and see for myself! ...time to time , and Colgate are a great brand , I thought , why not ?
I found there was a slight problem however . Browsing Asda's shelves this week looking for this item I eventually found it on the bottom shelf right near the floor . Getting my poor old body down to have a closer look I realised it's part of Colgate's childrens range . Oh well Hubby's always saying I'm 55 going on 6 so in for a penny , in for pound .
This childrens range had various ... ...flouride varies depending which Smiles Colgate you buy . For the really young the amount of flouride should not be too high .
Mine is a 50ml , mint stars flavour , in a cute little soft plastic tube which retailed at 98p . The lid is chunky , easy to open and nice and flat for you to stand the toothpaste on . I say cute as it's a nice shade of blue with what's supposed to be a couple of groovy kids on it . Squeezing a small amount of the toothpaste ...

Advantages: The tiny little stars are so cute! Disadvantages: Only recommended for children aged 6 plus because of the flouride content.
Having got sick of battles at bedtime and constant complaints from my oldest son that he doesn't like his toothpaste because it was too minty, too fruity or too fizzy (!), I set out on a mission to find a toothpaste that he'd actually agree to use! Whilst all parents want to find a toothpaste that's going to keep the kids' teeth pearly white, it's no use if they won't actually get in on their brush! Luckily, I did find a particular variety in Boots that I thought would catch his attention.
I saw a variety of the ColgateSmiles children's toothpaste range with Shrek pictures on it. It's one of the Higher Fluoride varieties so recommended for children aged 6 years and over, as their adult teeth start to come in and they need extra flouride and isn't really going to be suitable for children who just have their milk teeth. I'm not ...

Although Little Miss has no problems with teeth cleaning, and would probably use any products, I still feel drawn to these kind of novelty tooth pastes and like to buy products which are age specific.
WHAT IT THIS?
This toothpaste has been made for children age 6 years plus, and is specifically developed for permanent teeth (and presumably the gums and milk teeth). It claims to deliver the correct amount of fluoride and states that it will protect cavities by gently cleaning the teeth.
PRODUCT AND PACKAGING
The TOOTHPASTE comes in a smaller than is usual plastic squeezy tube. The toothpaste tube itself has a large jolly picture of Shrek on the front and some information and instructions for use on the back. The tube itself is chunky and easy for small hands to hold and manipulate, and the lift up lid ...
As anyone who knows me will tell you, dental hygiene was never one of my strong points. My teeth were an absolute disgrace. A couple of years ago, though, my best mate literally dragged me kicking and screaming to the dentist. I’ve always been terrified. But, since then, I’ve brushed my teeth regularly.
I was wandering around the Co-op the other day and I noticed a toothpaste for £1.35. Colgate 2 in 1 Toothpaste and Mouthwash. I’ve used mouthwashes before and I’ve always found the taste of them to be sickening, so I thought I’d give this a go.
The toothpaste is a clear turquoise coloured gel. It’s not as thick as you would expect from a gel, but it does state on the bottle that it is a liquid gel. Don’t worry though, it’s not so runny as to gloop off the toothpaste ...
