PlayStation 2. It's difficult to know where to start the review on the third instalment of this hugely successful franchise--the eye-wateringly sharp graphics might do, the easy-to-get-to-grips-with gameplay would be a winner, or the understated but superbly well-done commentary and sound would also do the job. In the end, it's probably easier to start with "just buy it".As you'd expect from a top flight rally sim, everything about the vehicles on offer can be customised and tinkering under the bonnet between stages really produces a difference. If you're a really bad driver you can also see the difference, as tearing the bonnet, side panels or windows out mid stage reveals an astonishing level of detail within the car. Engine parts move, suspension arms judder and Mr McRae himself bounces around the car's cockpit in full 3-D--the level of detail is amazing. With a variety of gameplay modes ranging from races over individual stages to a simulated three-season tour of duty as McRae himself, there's plenty of bang for your buck here--and believe us, by the time you've cannoned off the scenery for the umpteenth time you'll know what bangs are all about.Thankfully, Codemasters have resisted the temptation to fillColin McRae 3with discordant music tracks, relegating the score to intro and menu screens and leaving the in-game sound to co-driver commentary and a multitude of engine sounds--a pleasant change in an age where licensed soundtracks are king. Perhaps the strongest element ofCM3, though, is in the gameplay. The car handling is spot on and in wild weather (snow, rain, fog and more) guiding a speeding Ford Focus around sharp bends is a real art form. The PlayStation 2 has a wide range of good games and a handful of true AAA titles;Colin McRae 3falls into the latter category as a real must-have. --Chris Russell

Well if you are a fan of driving games, I am sure you will love this game as much as I do. Not only does this game have an excellent mode off rallying, but it also has a superb arcade mode.
There are two modes of play (rally and arcade mode). Arcade mode is excellent for beginners of racing games. This is because the handling of the car is excellent and it is unaffected by the amount of times you might crash your car. The mode consists of you racing against five opponents. The opponents are the computer (one can also play against seven other people if they wish to), and the computer attempts to thwart your attempts in winning the gold trophy. The reason it is imperative to gain the gold trophy is so that you can unlock the harder levels. Firstly you have the Class B rally (it consists of the rallies of Italy, Sweden and Greece). You have to amass the highest total of points to win the gold trophy. Points are awarded for finishing in the top five. The points one can gain are 6, 4,3,2,1.0 depending on which position you finish in. As you can tell it is not imperative to win all three races in the Class B mode. When you have completed this Class B tournament (also known as novice mode) you then progress on to the Intermediate mode. In this mode you have to win the Class B tournament again. Obviously it is harder in Intermediate mode because this is a harder level! However now you have the chance to compete in a Class A tournament. This consists of the rallies of Australia, Finland and France. When you win the gold trophy for both these tournaments in the Intermediate level, you then progress on to the hardest level of all – expert. This is very hard in trying to win because you have to drive a series of flawless races to win the respective trophies. As can be guessed, this takes a lot of practice to perfect, and when you have managed this, you will be in perfect condition to tackle the rally mode. There is also more to the arcade mode because you can tackle some time trial tracks. Here you try to beat your own personal best times. Personally I do not see the point in this as it does not get you any sort of noteworthy reward. The rallies of Finland, Greece, France, Sweden, Australia, Kenya and Italy are present at the start of Time Trial mode. You release the rally of Great Britain once you have completed the races in expert mode. One can see the stage records and the lap record before they encounter the level they are about to. You can also see these times by going into the options page (this can be accessed from the menu page). One can also access drivers, rally, arcade, network, options, credit and exit from the menu page.
Now having discussed the easier mode of arcade mode, now for the hard bit – rally! My god is this so different from the arcade mode. Not only are the tracks so much more demanding, you also have to combat the problems of damage. One can change set up (tyres, gear box, suspension, power ratio, brake bias, break power and steering). All these have a set amount of time to repair (you have an hour every time you go to have alterations made. You will also have to repair your car too and you have the same time to repair the car. Obviously you have to conserve the time because you have to use it wisely on the components that require fixing. The parts that can be repaired are: gearbox, turbo, suspension, differential, brakes, body, steering, electrics, exhaust, drive shaft and axles. In this mode you have eight rallies (Finland, Greece, France, Sweden Australia, Kenya, Italy and Great Britain) and within each rally there are stages. These stages are separate race tracks. On easy mode you have to complete 4-5 stages depending on how many stages are given on that rally. In Intermediate there are 8-9 stages and there is the same amount in expert. This is exactly how rallying works because the person who completes all the stages in the fastest time is given the maximum of 12 points. Points are awarded from 1-5 and they are awarded as follows – 12,8,6,4,2,1 and the other 11 drivers are awarded 0 points. and a gold trophy. Each rally consists of 4-5 races on easy, 9 on medium and a lot more on expert. By scoring the maximum of 12 points, you then release a cheat or a car. By getting a new car you will have a better chance of winning the title. The cheats are only available in the arcade mode and are somewhat useful if you find it difficult in winning the races.
Handling, on starting each rally, is very good However when damage occurs on completing the rallies, it becomes a nightmare! Hence I would recommend that you practice a lot on this mode. I had to practice a lot before I got the hang of under-steer and over-steer. Plus there are problems in grip on some rallies, especially Sweden. Here you race on snow and ice. However it is a good handling game in arcade mode and therefore it is very good. To drive the cars you just use the arrow keys, so it is pretty simple in that respect.
The sound is pretty bad I think because the exhaust sounds pretty bad even when you begin a rally in rally mode. The skidding noise is very cheap and I personally do not think it sounds realistic. In the arcade mode, you hear music and skidding noises when racing. However in rally mode, you have directions given to you by Nicky Grist (co-driver to McRae). You also hear the usual crashing and skidding, but really it is of a poor standard, especially compared to that of Gran-Turismo (my best racing game by far). The directions given by Nicky Grist are also shown on the screen, so do not worry if you don’t catch what he says.
Graphically the game is average on comparison to Gran-Turismo. Yes I know they are different sporting events, but I do feel that Gran-Turismo has awesome graphics even on the PS1. The damage that occurs in rally mode is always the same. You see the same amount of body-work flapping when it has been torn. The tyre marks left by the car when skidding is always the same, regardless of how much the car has skid! The cars also turn on their side, which is pretty funny because it takes ages turning it back round (I say ages I really mean 2-5 seconds). There is only one camera angle – above car. Personally this is my best angle anyway. In both modes, on completing a track, a replay of your driving is shown. Hence one can admire their driving, or laugh at ridiculous mistakes that were made.
The minimum requirements for this game are: a processor speed of 233, 32Mb RAM, 5Mb of disk space 16bit sound card and an 8Mb graphics card, although recommended is a processor speed of 500, 128Mb RAM, 650Mb of disk space, 16bit sound card and a 323Mb graphics card.
So my overall conclusion is that PC Gaming World were pretty accurate in their claim and that at a mere price of £25 in the shops at this present moment in time, it really is a bargain!

Colin McRae Rally 2.0's primary focus is on the World Rally Championship, which distinguishes it from Rally Championship and Rally Masters. The title comes from the featured driver in the sim, a thirtyish Scotsman who, in 1995, became the sport's youngest ever World Champion. Nicknamed "The Flying Scotsman," Colin McRae, his car, the Ford Focus WRC, and his co-driver, Nicky Grist, are featured in the game. Unfortunately for Grist, and for anyone ... ...to see one's hero!
Colin McRae Rally 2.0 represents the sport well, although play modes are more limited than in Rally Masters. You can choose from among Single Rally, Single Stage (of a rally), Time Trial and Challenge. The first three modes ought to be obvious. Challenge mode is actually a head-to-head race on parallel tracks (beginning in Japan). It's a knockout tournament, not unlike that in NFS: Porsche Unleashed. Lose and go home. Win and ...

So how does Colin Mc. Rae 2 rate as a driving game? Does it make the grade or not? And was it any better than its predecessor, the similarly titled Colin Mc. Rae rally? As well as this, the tracks are realistically modelled on the real thing, and the cars are based on the real design scematics. Advantages: Great gameplay Disadvantages: Graphics a bit dated
Even though this game is around 2 years old, it is still an excellent game, and in my opinion the best rally game currently available on the PC (until ColinMcRae2 comes out). The graphics and sound are still excellent, and I maanged to pick this game up for £1 from QXL.com. One of the best features of the game is the rally school, which teaches novices the basics of rally driving in an easy to learn way. I would very much recommend this game to any fan of driving games. ...

Manufacturer's product description
The defining moment for rally video games has been redefined. One of the world's most successful and acclaimed video games has been stripped down, rebuilt and reengineered in Colin McRae Rally 2.0.Starring McRae's Ford Focus as one of the 12 rally cars accurately recreated in the game, Colin McRae Rally 2.0 delivers all the speed of rally driving.Created with close attention to detail, all the effects add greatly to the realism of the game as spoilers can crack, the back bumper can break off from one corner so that it drags along the ground and windscreens can shatter. It's man and machine against the elements as weather effects vary through each track and are randomly generated, appropriate to each country. Race a country and you will experience one set of weather conditions, race it again and experience another completely different set of conditions.
