Colony - Rob Grant

... So if Grant does a follow-up to Colony, I will probably read it, because I have started to get to know these new characters. The author has a good track record, so I'll give him another chance. The blurb on the back of the book reads : “The human race is facing extinction. And the ... Read review

Oh frot - Grant without Naylor

Advantages: A bit like Red Dwarf
Disadvantages: Not enough like Red Dwarf

...had been in stasis. In Colony it is Eddie O’Hare, because he had been pickled in a jar. In Red Dwarf the other characters are a creature which has evolved from a cat, a hologram, an android and a computer. In Colony the other characters are merely the descendants of the original crew - none of whom are at all likeable - and the computer doesn’t have a personality at all. Call this sci-fi?!

I felt that Grant spent too long, ...
...a high-ranking officer (the ship’s Colony Planner) who has just become a millionaire and would rather spend the rest of his life spending his money than spend it on the space-ship he designed the rules for. He made his choice wisely. Eddie soon finds that the ship rules are cruel and idiotic. Children are only allowed to work in the same jobs are their parents. In some cases this works, but doesn’t turn out too well for people like the ... more

First Generation

Advantages: Sections of absolute hilarity
Disadvantages: A lot of filler

As Colony is Rob Grant's first step away from the Red Dwarf series, I was very interested to see how he would do without the established characters of Lister and co. guiding his writing. The book centres around Eddie O' Hare, a lifelong loser who, at the start of the book, is in grave danger due to a clerical error with a large sum of money. As he attempts to win the money in casinos, he manages to get himself involved in a project to save the human ...
...The main problem with Colony is that there's not a lot to credit the sections without comedy. The storyline is definitely there, but it is weak, not particularly engaging and lacking in the credibility department. Furthermore, it eats away at what Grant does best - create laughs. In parts he gets sucked in by the storyline and fails to deliver anything comical at all. The scene setting and charater descriptions are few and far between, I can't even ...

One of the funniest books i have read.

Advantages: A must for all Red Dwarf fans
Disadvantages: May bea bit tongue in cheek for some

After just finished reading this book I can say that it was one of the funniest books I have read in a long time. I had already read both of Rob Grants books which are colony and backwards, and I found them both hysterical, so I decided to see if Doug Naylors contribution was of the same calibre, and I certainly was not disappointed. Below is a brief description of the story: - Dave Lister - the last human. The future of the species is in the hands of one man. And all he has to help him are his wits, his cunning, and a two-page girdle section from a mail order catalogue Somewhere along the line, he'd made a major mistake. Why else would he find himself on a prison ship bound for Cyberia, the most inhospitable penal colony in Deep Space -- sentenced to eighteen years Hard Thought. This book may not be to every reader's taste ...

Review of The Last Human - Doug Naylor

My kinda work environment

Advantages: funny in places
Disadvantages: none

of this in a Europe where shoes are made from dried vegetable skins. Whilst in no way is this a page turner I would recommend it as an entertaining read, it has some very funny moments and at times the style of humour reminded me of a Ben Elton novel, and at 290 pages it will take a couple of days to read. Rob Grant has also had two other novels published, Colony and Backwards however it is his writing on Red Dwarf for which he is most famous. The rrp for the hardback version is £9.99 however I bought it a couple of months ago for £6.99 from Amazon. ...
