Sony RDR - HXD970 DVD recorder
Review of Sony RDR-HXD970 by
Bob77
Advantages: Own internal tuners, easy to use and quiet.
Disadvantages: 250gb might not be big enough but there is the 500 gb version.
An excellent DVD recorder. I am transferring my VHS tapes to DVD as well as recording new TV programmes. It is fairly easy to use and the quality is excellent. I particularly like the way you can list your recordings by category (film, documentary etc) making it easy to find what you are looking for. Recording using the Electronic Programme guide is very simple and there is a facility to time slip programmes if your viewing is interupted by a phone ... ...a different programme to the one you are watching.
The DVD recorder employs upgrading of DVD playback using the HDMI connection. So, if you have one of the HD ready TVs you will enjoy a better picture. One further attribute of this machine is that it is very quiet in operation. ...

Affordable Quality Multi-Format Drive.
Review of Sony RDR-HXD560S by
bananamanuk
Advantages: Design, Ease of Use, Hard Disc and DVD recording, Digital Tuner
Disadvantages: Not easy to see recording light, slow startup
...setup and of typically high Sony build standards. There is a plethora of inputs and output connections, and the recorder has the ability to record to it's internal Hard Drive or to DVD disc. The recorder also has a digital tuner which allows it to pick up terrestrial digital channels on Freeview. In all I think this offers excellent value for money vs quality, there are many cheaper alternatives, but I have had many Sony products and always feel ... ...It is typical of a Sony device in that it is very well made, excellent design features and simple menu systems. It's light, it's slim and looks the part with its silver/black finish. There are some minor issues, but for the price, for the brand and for the overall features, I am totally happy with my purchase. I hope this helps to inform your decision. Thanks for reading. ...

Annoying shortfalls
Review of Panasonic DIGA DMR-EX85 by
PeteK
Advantages: Sound and images
Disadvantages: The "guide" is limiting
Bought on the back of Which? best buy!
The others can't have had brilliant interfaces or they haven't used it in real life situations.
It's massively annoying that ...
You can't use the "guide" to record if the program has already started!
You can't go into the "Guide" to select programs to record, once the machine is recording!
If you have 100 things recorded and you watch number 50, it then takes ages to page (6 at a time) back to the end ... ...the end of programmes which is very annoying. I am not sure why as the clock is auto and I have check it. I add 2 mins on for anything on the bbc just incase.
Don't think it's multi region as standard.
Image and sound quality is very good (and I have it on 220+ hours setting which is second worst). It's good at what it does. ...

Excellent, but not high definition
Review of Sony RDR-HXD1065 by
dobieg
Advantages: Does far more than you might expect
Disadvantages: No High Definition support
...wrong, then tell me!)
Sony use an alphanumeric convention with their products, RDR-HXD1065 indicates that this is a high-end digital DVD-Hard disk recorder - Having tried for nine months, I've not been able to play or record high definition content on this system.
In spite of these drawbacks, I still find it an immensely useful piece of kit.
The model has now been superseded, but there seems to be plenty of these available online, and at a substantial ... ...massive 250Gb hard disk, which SONY claim can hold up to 350 hours of video content (that's fourteen and a half days at 24 hours a day!)
It ALSO acts as a CD/DVD player, offers a bewildering number of connectivity options, as well as providing a means of storing MP3 tracks and JPG pictures.
Other than high definition, the only other formats of any note which are missing are DivX, SACD and support for dual layer DVD+R media. It won't play Sony's ...
