Q: How good is the Philips Streamium SL300i?
Advantages: Well made, fast wireless card (54Mbps), Supports UPNP Servers, supports lots of file formats. Disadvantages: Bulky & arkward remote control
...Very good!
The Philips SL300i is a neat little box which plugs into your TV using a SCART lead. Once plugged in it opens up a whole new world for your entertainment. You can store all your photos, music and videos on a computer located elsewhere in your house and view them on your TV via a wired or wireless connection.
On the back is an Ethernet port, SCART connection and audio outputs so you can connect to a external sound system if you wish.
... ...more Internet feeds than the Philips software. You don't have to use any server software at all as it also connect directly to the internet were you can watch music videos, short films, play games and listen to radio channels of which there are loads (100's)
Onto the device itself, it is well made with a metal case and stand and looks very nice on or off, especially on as there are 2 very nice blue led's on the front.
The remote control is a let ...

Don't go near this machine
Advantages: Easy to use, mounting options, twin scart output, good picture Disadvantages: Very erratic, misses recordings, unable to update to new channels
Like everything electronic I have ever bought, or tried to buy by Philips, the performance of this digital freeview box has been very poor compared to other comparable brands, although this is the only thing that has not gone completely wrong.
This box gives a good picture through two scarts and has the option to save electricity with a low-power standby (< 1watt) option. It is fine if all you want to do is watch some extra channels, and don't mind ... ...It is a bit bulky compared to some makes but can be mounted upright to save space.
The menus are easy to navigate and it is generally user-friendy with no functions hidden in strange places. Response time is usuallly ok for text pages, though teletext and BBCi can be a bit slow at times.
There is a digital audio output (coaxial) for best quality sound.
However, there are serious problems when I try to record.
First of all, neither the remote ...

Thrown to the bin after ONE month
Advantages: Stylish design, Good interface, Quicker changing channels Disadvantages: Expensive, Very bad quality, Hardware fault, Extremly bad service
...my friend warned me that Philips is going down now, I didnt listen and now I paid enough for my lesson!
After ONE month of light usage(honestly rarely used, because June was my final exams!!) And when all exams are over, I sat back and relax and click the remote with coffee by side to enjoy my life, when exactly nightmare began! It simply wont open, no respond and no LED. It's dead!
I wrote to Philips support service. Their reply was 3 weeks after ... ...more, they replied with only " It is seems to be a hardware fault" Gosh even my 7 yr old cousin knows that, without looking at it for 3 weeks but 3 seconds!
During that 3 weeks I happenedly found a forums with post that describing same problem. An electronic expert replied that he has fixed SEVERAL of this model.,This digital box has a designing fault on power supply unit. Some bits of components could get burnt by chances! You can spent only 1 ...

Pure fraud - does not work!!!
Advantages: None Disadvantages: Does not work
...have been FUMING on the Philips support forums for more than a year. They simply don't work. They crash (!) playing many DVD's, they freeze randomly, etc.
Philips has admitted these problems exist (and did so in mid 2005) but has ignored all requests for a fix, while continuing to sell them. Instead, user after user has been told to send their machine in for repair - where it sits for 2-3 months, and is then returned either unfixed, or with new ...

EVA 9150-great addition to my living room; not to my bank
Advantages: Massive file range, incredible wireless networking, quiet, looks good Disadvantages: Simply too costly right now - extra features do not justify price
This machine is fantastic - it has even converted the wife who is as Luddite as they come. Its connection speeds with my router are pheomenal, using the n-standard, and I've been able to stream HD video from my router upstairs to this downstairs effortlessly. Misses out Windows Media Centre altogether (good thing!) and simply indexes your shared folders on whatever is your server. For me, I have a 1TB MyBook attached to my router and this works perfectly. ... ...so you can back up your DVDs and keep them scratch free somewhere safe. 500GB hard drive is useful for your favourite stuff - easily managed too. The outputs on the back are extensive - the picture quality through the HDMI even when upscaling is superb. Really can't fault this machine at all except for minor things like the UI is sometimes a bit unresponsive. The only downside is that it is overpriced in my view - better than the rest certainly but ...
