Sony RDR-HXD710
Advantages: Easy to use, good picure and sound and not noisy Disadvantages: Died too young!
I have the same machine, which I bought in January 2006. It locks up too, but not often enough to upset me. It has been very easy to use, including recording. It gives a very clear and sharp picture and the sound is fine. The fun is very quiet too! Now the machine has gone dead on me. The only sign of life is a 20sec "Welcome" lit sign and nothing else. Then the "Welcome" goes away and nothing can wake it up. Not as dead as a dodo though, as I can ... ...is getting to it, but nothing else. I spoke to Sony. "they know nothing". They referred me to one of their recommended repairers, but before I take it to them, has anybody experienced something similar and managed to solve it?
Rating: If it lasted a bit longer, I would have given a 4-5 star. But as it died on me so young, maybe a 3 star is sufficient. Recommending to others only if it has a second life!
Thanks
Andreas ...

Does Anyone Still Use Video's?
Advantages: Free's Up Lots Of Space Disadvantages: A Bit Bulky
...I have now had the Sony SLV-D 950 for almost two years, I bought it because i did not have a DVD player and wanted to get one, but at the same time i did not want to lose my collection of videos. After searching around numerous stores like Currys e.t.c. i came across this model i didn't really understand what the salesman was telling me, all i understood was that you could play DVD's, watch videos along with recording on videos. So after little deliberation ... ...my needs (simply just playing DVD's and videos without any problems). Anyway they were my reasons for buying this model, here are my views of the advantages and disadvantages of this piece of equipment.
The Advantages:
1. The main advantage with this DVD/Video combi is that it saves alot of room around your T.V. because you do not need to have two different machines (each taking up a fair bit of space) on the shelf(s) beneath your T.V. This could ...

Sony RDR-HX510
Advantages: Sleek, stylish, feature rich Disadvantages: Expensive, slow to respond
Sony RDR-HX510
After much research I had narrowed down the selection to 2 products - 1 from Panasonic and this 1 from Sony.
Both were similarly priced when I bought the Sony RDR-HX510 at £320.
There was not much in it when quality was compared, but the clincher was compatibility - I have mostly Sony everything so I reasoned that it was more likely to work well with own brand then competitor brands.
What's in the Box?
-----------------------
... ...sample recordable disc (very poor Sony !!!)
No Scart cable(s)
No Progressive scan connection cables (these will set you back £20-£30 for a cheap set)
No sample memory stick (again - poor Sony !!!!)
No channel changing mechanism for Satellite box.
What's Good?
-------------------
The fundamental idea behind the hard disk (HDD) recorder is great - record onto a computer hard drive rather than tapes or DVDs. More reliable, flexible and easier ...

Sony RDR - HXD970 DVD recorder
Advantages: Own internal tuners, easy to use and quiet. Disadvantages: 250gb might not be big enough but there is the 500 gb version.
An excellent DVD recorder. I am transferring my VHS tapes to DVD as well as recording new TV programmes. It is fairly easy to use and the quality is excellent. I particularly like the way you can list your recordings by category (film, documentary etc) making it easy to find what you are looking for. Recording using the Electronic Programme guide is very simple and there is a facility to time slip programmes if your viewing is interupted by a phone ... ...a different programme to the one you are watching.
The DVD recorder employs upgrading of DVD playback using the HDMI connection. So, if you have one of the HD ready TVs you will enjoy a better picture. One further attribute of this machine is that it is very quiet in operation. ...
