Sony RDR - HXD970 DVD recorder
Review of Sony RDR-HXD970 by
Bob77
Advantages: Own internal tuners, easy to use and quiet.
Disadvantages: 250gb might not be big enough but there is the 500 gb version.
An excellent DVD recorder. I am transferring my VHS tapes to DVD as well as recording new TV programmes. It is fairly easy to use and the quality is excellent. I particularly like the way you can list your recordings by category (film, documentary etc) making it easy to find what you are looking for. Recording using the Electronic Programme guide is very simple and there is a facility to time slip programmes if your viewing is interupted by a phone ... ...a different programme to the one you are watching.
The DVD recorder employs upgrading of DVD playback using the HDMI connection. So, if you have one of the HD ready TVs you will enjoy a better picture. One further attribute of this machine is that it is very quiet in operation. ...

Review of Sony RDR-HXD710 by

Advantages: Really Simple To Use
Disadvantages: Only Has one tuner
...Looks
Great, usual sexy sony styling. Silver on top and bottom, most controls hidden under bottom flap, sexy mirror effect strip running the entire length on the front. The romote control is great looking aswell and best of all, controlable in the dark with a very simple layout.
Operation
This has to be the easiest machiene I have ever had to work but it does SOOOOO much. The menu screens are intuative to use and every function you could possibly ... ...you lots of things, DVB, HDD 160Gb, chaptering system.....blah blah blar. What does it all mean?
Well, first of you can choose to record straight to disk or HDD (you can dub second for second (real time) to disk from HDD later). Now it becomes a typical VHS for the 21st Centary. Instead of analogue recording, you have digital freeview recording, and what a fine reception you get from it with full use of all freeview services except top-up tv (but ...

Not as good as expected
Review of Sony VTXD800U by
perfecthost
Advantages: good picture
Disadvantages: didn't reliably receive all channels
...other reviewers). I bought the Sony solely on the strength of consistent excellent reviews and it did produce a good picture. However, there were at least three key channels which even the Goodmans could receive, but where the Sony was totally unreliable. These included Channel 5. I have now replaced the Sony with a Sagem ITD61G (at almost a third of the price) and this has, so far, been totally reliable. I wonder if this is a good choice for people ...

Sony RDR-HX510
Review of Sony RDR-HX510 by
a4angus
Advantages: Sleek, stylish, feature rich
Disadvantages: Expensive, slow to respond
Sony RDR-HX510
After much research I had narrowed down the selection to 2 products - 1 from Panasonic and this 1 from Sony.
Both were similarly priced when I bought the Sony RDR-HX510 at £320.
There was not much in it when quality was compared, but the clincher was compatibility - I have mostly Sony everything so I reasoned that it was more likely to work well with own brand then competitor brands.
What's in the Box?
-----------------------
... ...sample recordable disc (very poor Sony !!!)
No Scart cable(s)
No Progressive scan connection cables (these will set you back £20-£30 for a cheap set)
No sample memory stick (again - poor Sony !!!!)
No channel changing mechanism for Satellite box.
What's Good?
-------------------
The fundamental idea behind the hard disk (HDD) recorder is great - record onto a computer hard drive rather than tapes or DVDs. More reliable, flexible and easier ...

A rushed product
Review of Sony Vaio Network Media Receiver VGP-MR100E by
kswhitlock
Advantages: See Above
Disadvantages: See Above
...movies and pictures from your Sony Vaio to your television screen through a component cable. I bought mine for £129 last year, with my Vaio SZ and since haven’t used it greatly.
THE SPECIFICATIONS
The specs for the Network Media Receiver are as follows:
• Support for High Definition photo streaming for high resolution viewing (1080i) • Wireless LAN: 2.4GHz wireless LAN (IEEE802.11b/g compliant) (64/128 bits WEP support)
• Support for Premium ... ...was irritating.
I feel Sony should have considered some form of search option as it is time consuming to find the file you want.
VIEWING MEDIA
I found it relatively easy to view pictures on the system and picture quality was great.
Viewing video was just as easy but a few glitches seemed to emerge:
Fast Forwarding and rewinding was difficult due to poor responsiveness and many attempts were required to find a certain point in a video. I also ...
