Yes I have to really put my opinion across well now as I feel Comet have the most incompetent staff around, and yet they have the best prices and the biggest product range. So I am pleased about Comet? Could I recommend them to you? Well, let me tell you a little story...

Around a week ago I decided I was going to purchase an MP3 player. So, I went to Shopsmart.com and searched for one, found the model I was after (A Samsung Yepp 64mb, but it was £165 apparently. So, I went to Comet's online store and I was pleased to see that the same model was a whole 10% cheaper than the price I had been given. So I read all the details of delivery etc and ordered online for £148.95 + £3.99 postage and packaging. I was very pleased because I could actually choose what time and day I could have the MP3 player delivered. I got a few emails confirming my purchase and the time of delivery. The customer service seemed quite good to me.

This is when it all went sour; so, when that day arrived and the time of delivery passed I was quite annoyed that they hadn’t stuck to their original time. I did get a phone call confirming that they WOULD NOT be delivering my MP3 player today because they had run out of stock, they also told me that they'd ring back to arrange another time. They never phoned back. But, because I needed they MP3 player before the weekend I decided to do something about it. At this point in time my patience was running a little dry.
I phoned up their customer services department trying desperately to find out which day the item would be delivered, but everybody I spoke to passed me onto another department (this happened 3 times, and I ended up in the same place talking to the same people over and over again). The telephone people weren't all that helpful, but they were very polite and I guess they tried their best.

Finally, I got to speak to someone who told me that stock had indeed run out, and that the new delivery would be on Monday. I explained that I needed the item before this new delivery time and I suggested that I might be able to pick it up myself at a local branch to me - providing it was in stock. I asked if I could collect the MP3yer from Milton Keynes' new branch, and after several minutes I was told that this would be fine, that they had one left and would be able to have it ready by the time I got there (I was told to speak to a particular member of staff so they would know what was going on).

I arrived at the store and showed asked to speak to the staff member I'd been told to. I showed my receipt, which had been sent to me, but this person said that someone else knew about it. So, after waiting for at least 5 minutes I finally got to speak with someone who knew what I was talking about. I had to explain the situation about 3 times, and had to wait a further 15 minutes for them to find my MP3. At last they found it. Great I thought! Now I can go home! But, no. They hadn't been given the correct authorisation or something, and their 'computer' wouldn't let them give me it. They said I could look around the store, or play on the new Playstation2 (which incidentally was awful; Ridge Racer 5 is pathetic!) whilst they sorted everything out.

I think it must have been about half an hour later that they managed to find out all the information they needed, and were awaiting fax from another department confirming that I could take my MP3 away.

A total of 1 hour was wasted here due to Comet's staffs' inability to communicate with each other properly; when I asked why this had taken so long they claimed that it was the people I had spoken to on the phone had made a cock-up of the situation and that they had given the wrong info to the MK branch.

I have to say that it probably wasn't the fault of the MK staff as they were fairly helpful, but hadn't been given the right authorisation, resulting in me waiting 1 hour for no fault of my own. I wasn't that pleased, but I didn't make a big thing about it, as I'm sure they tried their best. As for Comet, is it a good place to shop? Well, this branch in Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) is very modern and has probably the best range of products and lowest prices in the country, and it is a nice place to shop unless you had the problem like I did. And, the MP3 I purchased worked and I am pleased with it. So I have to say that if you buy online - wait for your goods unless you were in a situation like mine. If you buy in store then I'm sure this will be a much better shopping experience, as it really is the leading electronic retailer in the country.

Comet a burning sphere of destruction
Review of Comet (Shop) by Raybid

Advantages: Cheap , nice red logo
Disadvantages: Variable quality of goods, THE STAFF!!!

...Brian the assistant manager of Comet in Blackpool) and I got a replacement video machine. I returned home with this, and gingerly tried less beloved tapes in the machine, after a few weeks it began eating them again. I returned to Comet and they took GREAT DELIGHT in telling me that I was 2 days past the limit for getting a replacement video and would have to call their customer service centre. Phrases such as “its out of my hands” and ...
...attitude of the staff at Comet that I found mind-boggling. At around the same time I got the TV and Vid I bought a washing machine on Interest Free Credit, what they failed to mention is that when the interest free credit (six months) runs out, if you have not paid in full, they backdate the interest (at over 15 percent) to the day you bought the thing. So a £300 washing machine ends up costing £11 a week for the rest of your natural life. Much ... Read review

The C-word...U know where to go!
Review of Comet (Shop) by vinni

Advantages: None whatsoever
Disadvantages: Terrible aftersales - unsympathetic to the customer

...my pain here instead! Comet - You know where to come - not... the latter being my opinion of course, but I still twitch at the sight or mention of that company. I cannot pass its cold looking exterior these days without remembering, then swallowing deep as their fiery adverts continue to burn false promises deep into the retinas, of any unsuspecting star(buy) gazer! When I moved into my new home, 5 years ago, I had to buy a new fridge/freezer along ...
...deals going at that time. Comet (or, the C-word as l now prefer) seemed to be spitting out most fluently the sales-patter required to secure my £450; this figure agreed after many awkward minutes of me trying to justify my non-committed stance to his 5-year super duper plans. He couldn't work out that if I had had more money to spend in his store I would be buying the dearer one with the front drinks dispensor and bleeding ice maker! We agreed to ... Read review

Advantages: Best prices on most goods
Disadvantages: None so far

...off that I have given Comet in the past I still go back because I know that when push comes to shove they accede to the laws of the land. i.e. The Sale Of Goods Act. But I did the rounds comparing prices and delivery charges etc. and ended up at Currys. But the last time that I bought anything from Currys was when I bought a puncture repair kit from the shop in Accrington some fifty years ago (at that time they sold bicycles and all things bike ...

I was particularly looking for Indesit as I had complete confidence in that make, as my past experience had been excellent. I found the perfect machine for my needs in the Indesit WD10 UK priced at £289.93 with a delivery charge of £14.95 and delivery was arranged for the Sunday afternoon between noon and 6.00pm. No quibbling about all day or which day. (Currys please note) ... Read review

Comet, It pays to shop around
Review of Comet (Shop) by rl1303

Advantages: Not all stores are the same in the chain
Disadvantages: Might have to shop around to find the best

...Christmas went to my local Comet based in Kirkcaldy retail park in Fife. After enquiring about the PC and agreeing with the salesman that this was the model I wanted of he went only to return to say there were three base units in stock but the monitors that had been delivered were the wrong size! I waited to see if he would offer me the display monitor which was the proper one for the package, but no, 'We can get you one in7 to 10 days if you would ...

The salesman told me exactly the same it would take 7 to 10 days, and just as I was about to turn away dejected, he said 'But if you are happy to take the display model I'm sure we could help you. Not only did he negotiate a discount with his manager for me but also went through the recovery procedure with the disks supplied instore. Which meant all I had to do when I arrived ... Read review

Just wait for this...
Review of Comet (Shop) by PaulCatterall

Advantages: Very well planned, very accessible, good price policy, helpful staff
Disadvantages: They are only testing the water!

...used to the old style Comet stores, with the traditional "Dixons-esque" red and white sign. Here in Southampton, all that is a thing of the past. Gone is the poorly laid out and somewhat unimaginatively presented store, as we are now home to the UK's pioneering new look Comet! With a completely re-designed logo, and superb store layout, you will be guaranteed a better deal at the new stores once they make it across the country. In true Comet fashion, ...
...of elsewhere cheaper, and because of this, most of the prices are pretty good already. The company have opted for a more airy layout to the new stroes, and have planned exceptionally well for disabled access. Large roof-signs to guide you to the department you are looking for will also save the "stunned moth" look that many of us sport when wandering around electrical stores, and the new staff uniform is cheery, even if the staff aren't! Comet? More Like Big Ball Of Rubble And Dust!
Review of Comet (Shop) by  Tempus_Fugit

Advantages: were able to sell me a fax machine
Disadvantages: bored staff, not much choice, still flogging warranties

..., but they couldn't find it in the store room. They refunded my money but I was still without a fax machine. I needed it so all I could do was brave some more shops. I went over to Mill Hill where there's an Argos Superstore and Comet next to each other. Argos, again, didn't have what I wanted so the only other option was Comet next door. The place is the size of a small airport hangar and all the sales personnel looked very, very bored and harassed. At least I knew where to call for help if I ever needed some. The layout of the store didn't look very appealing to me. It was kind of the "stack 'em high, sell 'em cheap" kind. There was audio-visual to the left of the store. Televisions and stereo systems were cramped into a small space, the shelves too close together. It would have been difficult for two people to pass each other... Read review

A Potential Comety Of Errors, I'll Warrant - 9/04
Review of Comet (Shop) by  BNibbles

Advantages: Better warranty deal than Dixons Stores Group
Disadvantages: Same calibre of staff. Getting them to pay up when the warranty ends is akin to getting blood out of a stone.

...I’ve decided to update a nearly 4-year-old opinion for two reasons really. Firstly to show new Ciaosters what we used to be able to get away with and still get paid 10p for having written it, and 5p every time a member read it. The opinion below serves as a monument to this generosity, and as such I haven’t modified it, more as a curio rather than any misguided impression that I might have gained that it was perfect! Secondly, to build on what I wanted to bring to everyone’s attention at the time i.e. that Comet’s extended warranties could work out to be better value for money than say one from Curry’s because you’d get your money back if you never had to claim. Even on today's Ciao, you can’t really pick out one specific feature of a retailer/service without someone commenting ‘you could have told us more about the shop... Read review

Little competition to force standards to be raised
Review of Comet (Shop) by  sue.51

Advantages: Good price and credit deals
Disadvantages: Appalling rates of interest if you don't pay on time, terrible customer service

...'t understand. Another visit to the store, I created riots there, and left the proud new owner of two sets of cables Free of Charge to complete my purchase. I decided there and then I would never shop in Comet again. Well never is a long time. STORE CARD Despite being reluctant to give me credit, two weeks later I received a Comet store card giving me £x,xxx credit; this card can actually be used in Woolworths, MVC, Comet, NEXT, B&Q and Superdrug, and works on the same basis as a credit card, where you get up to a maximum of 7 weeks interest free credit and then interest is charged. A WORD OF WARNING - USE THIS CARD, BUT YOU MUST PAY OFF THE BALANCE IN FULL - INTEREST RATE: 29.9% for payments by direct debit, 31.9% for payment by any other means (aka very expensive) Interest free credit works on the same basis; if you do not pay...
