The C&C Franchise is the big name in PC strategy gaming. Anyone who is anyone knows exactly what the C&C name entails - Excellent, rich gameplay, fun missions, and great graphics and sound to boot. Red Alert and Red Alert 2 are 2 of my all time favourite games, especially playing them against mates at a LAN party... ah the time I must have wasted... So anyway, with Generals, and the move to a fully 3D environment, I was expecting more of the great red alert gaming, with the bonus of spruced up graphics, sound and effects.
Unfotunately, whilst delivering in the shiny department with beautifully crafted units, terrain and scenery, the game seems to be lacking a certain something, that factor that makes you sit up and say "Wow!"
The gameplay is classic C&C, with base building, resource gathering and of course enemy destroying. The problem with Generals is that its, well... boring. Yes, it will entertain for say, a month, it did for me, but you will lose interest. I have the deluxe version, which contains the Zero Hour expansion pack, and I havnt even bothered installing the expansion, because I am bored with the main game already, I havn't even done all of the campaigns.
Of course there are a lot of positive reviews out there of this game and I am only one opinion. My experience of strategy games does make me say however, that there are other, better games out there, such as Ground Control 2, which I have also reviewed.
If you're an avid C&C fan, you may still be wanting to give this a try, so below are the specs for the game:
(Solo & 2 player multiplayer) 1. Windows 98/ME/2000/XP (Windows 95/NT not supported). 2. 800 MHz Intel Pentium III or AMD Athlon processor. 3. 128 MB RAM. 4. 8X CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive. 5. 1.8 GB free hard disk space plus space for saved games. 6. 32 MB video card (Nvidia Geforce 2, ATI Radeon 7500 AGP video card) with DirectX 8.1 compatible driver. 7. DirectX 8.1 compatible 16-bit sound card. 8. Keyboard. 9. Mouse.
(Solo & 2-8 multiplayer) 1. 1.8 GHz or faster Intel Pentium IV or AMD processor. 2. 256 MB or more of RAM. 3. 8X or faster CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive. 4. 1.8 GB free hard disk space plus space for saved games. 5. Nvidia Geforce 3 or more recent Direct 3D capable video card.
(Internet 2-4 players) 1. 56 Kbps or faster internet connection. 2. One full set of game discs per player.
(Internet 5-8 players) 1. Cable, DSL or faster internet connection. 2. One full set of game discs per player.
(Network 2-8 players) 1. TCP/IP compliant network. (Specs taken from broomari's review as I didn't see the point of typing them again)
The game runs on my Pentium 4 2.1Ghz, with 256Mb RAM and Geforce MX 440 card, although I have all of the graphics settings set quite low, and it does slow down from time to time during heated battles.
The game's difficulty is also fairly hit and miss - it is very easy to get to grips with, especially with the use of the training missions, and the first few missions in each campaign are also nice and simple, but then the difficulty tends to fluctuate quite badly from majorly hard, to majorly easy, and certainly isn't a steady progression through the game. I found some of the missions to require trial and error as well, with me having to retry a good 3 or 4 times, which serves to bore you to tears quite nicely.
Online, things do take a decided turn for the worse. To begin, you only have three teams to choose from, those being the GLA, China and the USA. This is poor when you consider Red Alert 2 offered a good 7 or 8 countries to choose from. The battles therefore are not very varied. Connectivity is fairly stable I found, although not being a fan of playing this game online, I could have just been lucky.
Overall this game does have its merits, most definately, and it WILL keep you entertained for a while. Just make sure you dont buy this before summer expecting to be playing it until the Autumn because I doubt you will be... unless you happen to enjoy it of course :P
