The original Command & Conquer was released in 1995, since then the series has become one of if not the most popular line of games for the PC, Westwood then released Red Alert (1999) followed by Tiberian Sun (1999), Red Alert 2 (2000) and most recently Generals (2003).
Command & Conquer and Tiberian Sun both consist of two sides GDI or the Global Defence Initiative and the Brotherhood of NOD, whereas Red Alert and Red Alert 2 featured the Allies versus the Soviets.
Red Alert 2 allows you to play both the Allied and Soviet campaigns. It features 12 allied missions and 12 soviet missions as well as a very basic tutorial.
I would say that the units you may buy in Red Alert 2 are quite balanced whether you play as the Allies or Soviets, however I believe that the expansion pack Yuri's Revenge tips the scales a little as the soviets no longer have any psychic units such as Yuri, but as far as Red Alert 2 is concerned to sides are quite equal.
The super weapons in Red Alert 2 are also well balanced with the Allied Weather Machine and the soviet Nuclear Missile Silo both doing 50% damage to each other.
Red Alert 2 features lots of good ideas since Tiberian Sun such as the Allied Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) which is a personal favourite of mine. The IFV is the most unique unit on the battlefield because its turret can adapt its weapon according to the unit placed inside for example; placing an engineer inside would transform the IFV into a Repair IFV capable of repairing vehicles whereas a GI would make a machine-gun IFV.
Since Red Alert the Soviets have continued development of their Tesla technology and the Tesla coils can now be charged by Tesla troopers to increase the bolt of electricity discharged from the coil, and also a Tesla tank has been developed which can fire over enemy walls.
The soviets most powerful unit is the Yuri Prime which like the Yuri can mind control enemy units, but can also capture buildings from a distance without the need for engineers.
Red Alert 2 features; a skirmish game play mode which allows you to fight a one-off battle against up to 7 computers; multiplayer across a local area network or internet as well as the two single player campaigns.
Performance Processor; I first played this game on an AMD K6-2 500 Mhz processor and it run fine at 640x480. I then bought a Duron 1400 and it run at 1024x768 with no problems. Graphics; any graphics card with 16 Mb or more should work fine Sound; a standard sound card will perform as well as an expensive one as the sounds in my opinion are not very dynamic.
Out of all the Command & Conquers - including Generals, Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge is my favourite because of the storyline, fairly good graphics, but most of all the great game play and skirmish mode allows for a unique battle every time you play.
I would recommend this game to anyone looking for a decent game to pass time, and it has now become a budget game which is priced at only ten pounds, so you can't go far wrong in my opinion.

Advantages: Just about everything!!! Gameplay, Lifespan, Units, Opportunities, Internet, the list continues Disadvantages: Childish scenary compared to Tiberian Sun, and (i'm struggling) expansion pack taking too long to come out!!
Advantages: This game is informative even if you dont realise it.The new units are a real plus. Also the graphics and gameplay are far superior than any other game of the series I have played Disadvantages: The game can get repetative.
Advantages: Smoother, faster, brighter, highly more efficient and the game play is superior to previous Command and Conquer games. Disadvantages: Installation was tricky plus it needs a high spec of PC plus loads of memory. Game background is not very believable!
Advantages: Few bugs, inventive new units, compelling gameplay Disadvantages: Gets boring after about 2 weeks, TERRIBLE AI, few new ideas, seen it all before
