"The last PC ...."

The size. Too dark to snap mine under the desk

The size. Too dark to snap mine under the desk

I think it’s fair to say PCs are on the way out. Increasingly the home computing market has moved to the less cumbersome and more mobile laptops, netbooks and tablets and games being played on extremely powerful consuls now. Porn, of course, is being played on all formats you can get internet on! In fact without free porn the internet may never have happened, and so the PC boom. Bill Gates has yet to confess that’s why the young geek invented the home PC.

At work PCs are also on the way out as employees become increasingly freelance and expected to hot desk with their own laptops. Intel and Microsoft have seen their share price half in just ten years as Apple and the big smartphone maker’s serge ahead as the new tech kings. It’s also fair to say the Windows phone wasn’t exactly a reliable piece of kit.

My PC isn’t brand new but I do prefer to sit at my computer desk when I do my reviews and sports writing so kitted out. I like a big chunky keyboard and room for other things and files. The PC has a powerful Athlon11 x2 processor and a huge 4GB of ram. It’s the minitower design and has a massive 4GB hard-drive with pre-loaded Windows Seven. This computer has more computing power than the whole of the NASA and Russian space program put together between 1960s and the 1990s. I have XP on a different partition on the drive incase of a critical virus attack that beats my labor intensive Avast virus protection. It has plenty of USB ports and two HDMI sockets and wired into my 15inch flat screen monitor. It also has telephony connections and plenty of card slots. You can run anything from the back of this. It doesn’t have the older serial ports on though so make sure that’s not an issue for your older monitor and printers etc.

It’s light to move around (a bag of sugar or two) so to give easy access to the ports and card slots at the back and so easy to get around the back to plug memory sticks and cards in. It also has chunky fans on it to cool the processor, hard-drive and memory, so that means a real power hog and so not one to leave on all the time on standby. It has a built in CD and DVD player to download any soft and hardware required, currently a printer and scanner also hooked up to mine. You won’t struggle with running things on it.

It’s not noisy, fairly ergonomic and boots up pretty quick. It sits well on my desk and my webcam sits neatly on top. It only has four screws on the back panel for quick access. Only go in there if you know what you are doing. You will need to keep the fan clean of dust and dirt. If you don’t go in there is also a cute little trapdoor to access the fan to keep that clean. If your old computer is making a funny noise it’s the fan. Get in there and fix it as it’s not doing its job and the computer could overheat and fry the processor. It will sound like a light aircraft taking off at your local grass trip airport if it needs some TLC. Most fans growl when they are working too hard so it could also be a virus.

At £200 from a local computer shop some four years ago it was a pretty good deal. I tend to build my computers up and this did not have the spec it has now. I added memory from its original spec that didn’t really have enough power to run more than Windows Seven and certain computer games. I also added a new video card to boost the 3D graphics. Again all that stuff is straight forward. The only thing you can’t change is the motherboard and chip as they are bespoke to the tower, the only thing that isn’t universal in home computing.
