...The CompaqEvoD300v is a future proof PC for any bigginer or an ideal gift for a relative seeking his/her first/second PC.
Its quite fast and is able to perform many tasks in a respectable amount of time. The 20GB Hard Disk isn't big but it's plenty of space if you just need a PC for general use, e.g. surfing the net and writing letters.
It's not a paritcaully powerfull PC and only comes with basic sound and graphics capabilities, but this is fine for most people.
This, like most PCs nowadays is Internet ready and it shouldn't take you too long to get that going.
One of the big advantages is, its compact, if you don't wan't it to dominate your desk then I surpose it's the PC for you!
As a Compaq PC you can expect high build qaulity and a PC that will last you, but you can often find better bargians with other companies....

Advantages: Durable, loads of fixes on the hp site, quite nifty for its age Disadvantages: just getting on a bit
...disk can be removed without removing the chasis etc etc.
With a simple cooling system (As in one way) cleaning the gunk out of the cooling passages is easy with a domestic vaccum.
It boasts quite a few specifications, which still sound ok, even though its massively out of date:
* Mobile Intel Pentium III-M 1.2 GHz processor
* 14.1-inch SXGA+ or 14.1-inch XGA display
* 4.8 lb/2.2 kg weight
* 256-MB (133 MHz), upgradeable to 1024 MB
* Up to 40-GB SMART hard drive
* 32 MB graphics intergrated
* User removable hard drive
* Mini PCI modem and integrated NIC
* Full-size keyboard
* Infra Red unit fixed on the front
* Over 3.5 hours of battery life (Normal conditions)
* Magnesium display enclosure

Advantages: lightweight, reliable Disadvantages: Mouse control
...I have used this laptop for many years now as my work laptop, I have had absolutely to problems with reliability, or ease of use.
The only downside I find is that the mouse control is dreadful, but as I connect a proper mouse to it thankfully I havent had to use it too much.
So from a reliability point of view, its been switched on at least 40 hours every week of the year and it just keeps chugging along.
Screen quality is clear for the age of the laptop, not up to the new mirror image screen, but quite capable for day to day activities of word, excel, info explorer etc.
Standard Processor is the Intel Pentium 1.4ghz, with 256Ram installed, although my work laptop has had the memory doubled, apparently to help XP process. Standard battery should last 6 hours on a full charge.
40GB IDE hard drive is included, with a weight...

I've recently been able to test this laptop as my stepdad has received one through his work. It's the first time I have seen an HP/Compaq laptop, but I've used many other brands so I'll be mainly using them as a comparison.
