I'd always built my own computers in the past so when it was time for an upgrade I started looking around for more parts.
I tended to stay clear of pre made up computers as there were always bits in them that were either A- not good enough or B- I wouldnt need at all. Besides, mosts companies used to fill them so full of thier own junky software it slowed them down!
So when hubby suggested a compaq I was a bit dubious.

A couple of weeks later he bought me a second hand Evo D500. I looked at the Specs and it was way better than my old box of bones. 512 of ram , a nice p4 1.6 chip 20gig hard drive and a cd rom.... nice

The first thing I did was strip it of its case- (i love taking things apart) to find out how easy it would be to add my essential bits and bobs.

The case came apart very easily. It had been fitted with thumb screws at the back, so no fiddling with a screwdriver. The top just slides off do that you can see the three clips at the front which when pressed the front just pops off.

It had special screws for the hard drives and cd roms and (spares too, all in a line at the bottom of the casing) that slide into the special carriage.Everything was very compact but really easy to get to.

It was nice to see three memory slots , so I whacked three strips of 512mhz in it, and it had plenty of PCI slots(3) for my extra sound card.

The thing I liked most about it was that it was so quiet. I do quite a bit of audio recording so I needed a quiet machine, and with this in the cupbourd I hardly heard it until it accessed a CD.

It came with Windows XP and Compaq software (which wasnt intrusive at all) and the Compaq software that you didnt want could be uninstalled without causing any problems.
All in All I was very happy with my fast, quiet, new PC .

As for price, like I said, I had this second hand so I dont know the new price, and I dont think compaq sell this actual model anymore, but I wouldnt hesitate to buy another Compaq machine.

So if you are in the market for a good all rounder and you get the chance of a second hand Compaq, they are well worth it

Evolutionary or not?
Review of Compaq Evo D500 by iamasadlittleboy

Advantages: Cheap, Small, Effective, Simple...
Disadvantages: ...Simple, Not for Gamers

...settled on doing was a COMPAQ Evo, with a COMPAQ 5500 monitor from the library. The nice silver and black design looks appealing when you first set your eyes on it, and it's also smaller than most desktops I've seen (though I think I've seen smaller Dell's in the past), so will quite happily fit most places. In comparision to other objects, it's about the size of an X-box (original one), which may have been big for a console, but is small for a desktop ...
...about it (though please note I am only doing work on it, as opposed to playing Doom 3 or Half-life 2, which I doubt it could support). It seems to run pretty quickly, with the only slowness I've seen being when I tried to open I.E (could be down to the I.E. not being the greatest of programs though). Everything else opens speedily, the stuff I'm typing has no lag (always annoying for us touch typist's huh? ;-)). The hard drive is relatively small ... Read review

Good for the average user.
Review of Compaq Evo D500 by LightShadow

Advantages: Small and Space Savvy
Disadvantages: Not much power.

This computer makes a great internet/email and word processing computer. But, it lacks the processing power , graphics card, and sound that is required for the full fleged computer gamer. The space saving design of this computer is unmatched. It's small take up space is perfect for any house or business. It also makes for perfect office for the beginner use with it's 3 year warnety. Even though the hardware is lacking- it makes up for that in it's ...
...beginning/intermediate user. It has many easy to use features that will increase your productivity and personality. If your into gaming or media design- i'd reconsider this computer- but if you're someone that would just use it for writing papers and browsing the web: this is your kind of computer. ... Compaq d500 pentium 4 1.6ghz PC
Review of Compaq Evo D500 by Bonzo45

Advantages: Small, Powerful, easy to use
Disadvantages: For more proffesional use it would need upgrading.

The compaq Evo D500 p4 1.6ghz is a good pc in many ways 1)The graphics card has a 3d hardware accelerator so you can play basic 3d games. This isn't integrated so that means that you can take it out and put in a new one I did exactly that and that turned it into a gaming machine. 2) It has 256 mb of Ram in one slot and there are three so again lots of room for upgrading but unless you want' to do a high powered process like video editing 256 is plenty ...
...has a 20gb Hard drive this is good because it means that the pc can stay small as this isn't a very big hard drive and if you are thinking of buying it do not be put off by this as you can get an external hard drive these days for about £60. I gave this pc 4 stars because it is very practicle as it is small yet powerful and with 2 pci slots you could add things like usb 2.0 or firewire. Great overall computer and i would reccomend to anyone no ... Read review
