Please look for my video review which should be up in the next few days or so.
This item isnt available new, but is well worth a purchase second hand. As with all my reviews, items are used in the most demanding places around the world, they dont always survive, but this little baby has done me proud.
Without any replacement parts (Not even a battery!) it has survived in several continents and in extreme temperatures and conditions (see below)
The Compaq N600c is a hard wearing reliable laptop that can easily kick the rear end out of even the newest of models.
Its construction is fantastic, meaning that even when dropped, it usually survives! All bits and bobs can be pulled out and replaced with ease, i.e. the DVD can be removed, and replaced with a floppy, the Hard disk can be removed without removing the chasis etc etc.
With a simple cooling system (As in one way) cleaning the gunk out of the cooling passages is easy with a domestic vaccum.
It boasts quite a few specifications, which still sound ok, even though its massively out of date: * Mobile Intel Pentium III-M 1.2 GHz processor * 14.1-inch SXGA+ or 14.1-inch XGA display * 4.8 lb/2.2 kg weight * 256-MB (133 MHz), upgradeable to 1024 MB * Up to 40-GB SMART hard drive
32 MB graphics intergrated * User removable hard drive * Mini PCI modem and integrated NIC * Full-size keyboard
* Over 3.5 hours of battery life (Normal conditions) * Magnesium display enclosure * Common docking solutions across Armada E and M and most Evo series notebooks * Integrated MultiBay * Dual battery support
Now, in extremes, it performs like this: -40 oC Battery instantly flat, display doesnt work (no suprise) -10 oC Battery instantly flat, display very slow to refresh, and key / program response slow -/+ 0 oC Battery lasts 10 mins, works really really well 50 oC likes to have a air con unit next to its fan input - otherwise majorly overheats and shuts downIn the cold, I made a cable that slots onto the battery input, and then into the battery, so I can keep the battery next to my body for heat, that seems to work well, but the battery gets a bit too warm next to the skin, and probably isnt a too sensible idea, extremes of heat, its best to place near an air con unit output to make sure cool air gets to the inside, otherwise, it just switches itself off.
The fan input likes to be hoovered out every now and then if its dusty out there, but, this is really simple, and seems to clear all the clag out of the unit.
Sounds like you have put this throuh some tough trials. Like below I would have liked a bit more information such as speed, capacity, performance all under general conditions.
