Nearly 4 years ago I bought myself my first well known laptop after 3 lots of non branded ones. There is a world of difference and with careful selection I ended up with the Compaq Evo N800. What a break that turned out to be.
First things first - the screen is superb with top laptop resolution rather than the crappy max of 1280xnothing offered by most other models out there even today. 1400 x 1050 gives too small a font some might say. Load of rubbish. This screen has the best viewability I've ever witnessed by which I mean that it's easily readable from any angle in front of the screen. No, it's not widescreen but don't let that put you off.
Battery time is a solid 2-3 hours depending on activity and even after 4 years of the same battery it's still the same.
Layout of ports etc is pretty standard and the only thing to say here is that there is nothing in a stupid place (USB ports are around the back where they should be and not on the side where your sticks etc get in the way of your mouse).
Typical 3kg weight makes this portable and with all the connectivity options I've given presentations and ran workshops on a variety of external peripherals including a few cinema systems (fantastic).
Speed has never been a problem with the P4 2GHz processor - even today.
Not had a single problem with the keyboard despite very heavy use.
I've only had to replace 2 things: the hard disk (3 months ago) and the cable for the laptop display.
The only problem with the Evo is that it hasn't given me a single solitary reason for me to buy a new, better Laptop!!! Normally I look forward to that pleasure every 2-3 years but no such luck here - it's still going strong, has all the features (and better) of the latest laptops and still looks great (probably could do with a bit of a rub down if I'm honest though).
So, if you want to buy a laptop now and not have to bother again for another 5 years or more then this one's for you. If you want to be able to buy a new one every 2-3 years then don't buy the Evo cos you won't get any benefits from a new one for quite some time.
