The Compaq Evo Thin Client T20 is a Windows-based terminal popularly referred to as a "thin client". A Windows-based terminal or thin client is a client device that connects over a...
more...network to a Windows NT Server running Windows 2000 or NT Terminal Server Edition or either of those operating systems with Citrix MetaFrame software running atop the server OS. This combination of client and server running a thin client solution is referred to as Thin Client Server Computing. But the thin client is just a part of that overall solution. A thin client Windows-based terminal only processes keyboard input and screen output, leaving all application processing and storage to the server. Compaq thin client solutions can allow companies to dramatically lower the costs associated with their client/server infrastructure. Unlike a traditional PC with high-speed processors and data storage, these terminals are optimized to act solely as "windows" to the server where users' applications and data reside. Instead of applications running on individual PCs, all applications are run from a single server, greatly simplifying the administration and support needed to run an IT department. While some knowledge workers truly need the processing power of a PC (such as engineers, designers, or financial analysts), many workers perform task-oriented, transactional functions (such as travel agents and call center operators), in environments that would be ideal for the Compaq Evo Thin Client T20.

What is it?

A “thin client” is a device that enables all applications to be run from a single server instead of the applications been run from the individual persons computer. Compaq evo thin client T20 otherwise known as the “thin client” for people in the trade. Compaq evo is a Microsoft based terminal, which means it has the ability to connect over a network to an operating system (server) which has a citrix metaframe software operating.
Thin client enables the server to control all applications, processing and storage. This means all applications are run from a single server, thus the thin client is used to process keyboard input and screen output, and hence is where the users applications and folders stay.

Experience

The experience I have had with Compaq evo thin client T20 is that they are relatively thin and compact; therefore it does not take up that much space, thus allowing the space to be efficiently utilised. Also the thin “thin client” is extremely durable as not one has broken yet in six months, whereas with the pc one would be fault every week. Also the thin client does not allow users to tamper or reconfigure the pc settings, which in my college has stopped users altering the pc settings as a form of vandalism, against the institution. Also thin client’s enables all users to be up to date with the latest software, unlike pc s where only a few could be update with the latest software due to spiralling costs.
The problems I faced with Compaq evo thin client T20 are scarce. The main problem being there were no floppy drive and therefore I could I could not save my work and then improve/add to it at home and vice a versa. Furthermore when using the internet the uploading of sites became very long and boring when there are multiple users on the network. Thirdly if the server goes down all the computer that rely on the server will not operate as they will not be able to log onto the network

Advantage

It provides low maintenance and allows improved manageability for any firm .Thin clients decrease hardware maintenance and improve application deployment. Also thin clients are highly reliable and can benefit any organisation that relies on a network of computers connected to a single server. (I.e. colleges,).In addition it is highly endurable and made to last the knocks and bangs or every day use, due to its solid structure. This has been proven by my college as not one has been broken yet in the two years we’ve had them. Also it allows the latest version of the software to be available for everyone as all the computers run of a network, which is connected to a single server.

Disadvantage

It has a low power usage, and therefore will not be any good for people which manage of create content. Secondly it does not possess a floppy drive or hard drive therefore work saved on an floppy cannot be accessed, by any computer, it can only be accessed by the main computer (or an computer with an floppy space)

Additional information

The Compaq evo thin client T20 has a maximum supported ram of 256 MB (mega bites). It has a maximum resolution (external) of 1280 x1024 pixels. Its weight is approximately 7.7 lbs which is roughly 3.43kg.It has width of 3.6 inches ( 9 cm), diameter of 7.7 inches (19.25cm) ,height of 8.4 inches ( 21cm), it has an tower structure in form. It requires an voltage Ac (alternating current) of 100/240V.It has an operating temperature of 32-104 ºF, with an humidity range of 20 -80 %.Also it has an integrated sound card for audio output and a network adapter for networking. However the Compaq evo thin client T20 does not have a hard drive, removable storage, CD/DVD drive, speakers modern or expansion bays.
