...) I kept coming across Compaq and discovered they had their own Auction Site at www.auctions.compaq.co.uk which also carries some Hewlett Packard Equipment.
I sucessfully bid for two Identical Computers and Monitors for myself and my son at a total cost for both machines of £885 ( which will reduce when I sell the old machines). The computers are Presario 6240EA and the monitors 17" S7500. Windows xp and all the drivers sorted by the ... ...warranty remaining.
Note the Compaq machines do not have monitors but the HP machines being sold at the moment do.
Tips on Buying.
Check the machine you are interested in is a current model. Make sure you understand how the bidding works. Take your time, check the prices the machine sells for over two weeks - each Auction lasts a day and finishes at about 5.30 pm though late bidding often carries it past that time. New ... more
I had an old home built computer. 166 Pentium, I Meg Hard Disk 32Mb memory with just a CD-Rom running Windows 95 in an AT case. My son had an Elonex with a 366 Pentium 11, 6Meg Hard Disk 64Mb memory with a CD-Rom running Windows 98. It all started with the unsucessful attempt to add a CD-RW and DVD player to his machine. I had been considering upgrading my machine for over a year, but it would require a complete new start. I was also nervous about building a machine with Windows xp due to problems of incompatible or non-existent drivers. By a very roundabout route weighing up various options, including cost, which seemed to rule out a new machine I started to look at Auction Sites. Again being nervous of dealing with unknown Companies or Individuals ( although I had recently bought a Laser Printer from one of the sites ) I kept coming across Compaq and discovered they had their own Auction Site at www.auctions.compaq.co.uk which also carries some Hewlett Packard Equipment. I sucessfully bid for two Identical Computers and Monitors for myself and my son at a total cost for both machines of £885 ( which will reduce when I sell the old machines). The computers are Presario 6240EA and the monitors 17" S7500. Windows xp and all the drivers sorted by the manufacturer. The goods are either End of Range, Discontinued or Refurbished which is what I bid on. Refurbished means it has been delivered to a customer who for some reason returns it. The company then checks and carries out any work and the machine is then retested. Also it "may" have cosmetic blemishes. The packaging may also be tatty where it has been opened and labels torn off. Neither of my machines or monitors have a mark on them - they are just as new. Each machine is three months from first manufacture and has 9 months warranty remaining.
New machines are then put up on the site as the Auctions finish at about 6pm. Only bid when there are several machines available, prices tend to be lower then. The price also seems to vary during the week. Make clear you understand how the Bidding works these are "Dutch" auctions. Don't forget to allow another £35.25 for delivery. Once you have made the decision to go ahead put your bid in as early as possible when the site opens and enter a "Proxy" bid for the maximum you are prepared to pay - based on previous prices. Now sit back and wait. Your bid will increase from an initial £1 to remain a winning bid at the lowest possible price. Now if there were only one machine and somebody put in a Proxy bid 1 minute later the price would race up until one of you hit their bid limit. If their bid were the same you would win since your bid was earlier. However if someone bid £10 more than your top figure they would win since the amount is greater. If there are several machines this is less likely to happen. What if you are outbid - well simply wait until the next day's auction starts and bid again. If you have set a realistic price you will win a machine but not necessarily at the first attempt - be patient. Personally I think it was a great way to buy, but recognise that there could slight marks or damage and make sure the machine is what you want.
Advantages: Fast, Fast, FAST!!! (Oh yeah... and easy to set up and use, too.) Disadvantages: Huh?!!? No stereo speakers?!?!
...some initial observations about the Compaq Presario 5004US. It’s the latest addition to Compaq’s stable of Presario 5000-series high-end desktop computers. It took me a year and a half to amass enough money to buy a new computer. I started saving my pennies practically the day I bought my Hewlett-Packard (HP) Pavilion 4550Z eighteen months ago. During that period, I read countless computer reviews, compared notes, and narrowed my list ... ...paper, anyway – was the Compaq Presario 5004US. After discussing different models with the salesman for 30 minutes, and weighing my options for nearly another hour, I paid the man $1,149 and eagerly walked out with my new "screamer." ...directly to pages on the Compaq website. These contain things like the pick-of-the-week online shopping service, a search facility, driver updates and support information, plus a service that lets you use the PC's speakers and microphone to make voice calls via the Web.
None of this is bad or damaging to the Presario's case, but neither is any of it good enough to make you forget about the shortcomings in the core specification. The same could be ... ...the 8-speed DVD-ROM drive and 24/4/4-speed CD-RW drive.
This sort of thing, with its potential for creating compilation CDs of ripped MP3 downloads, and for archiving and backing up of data will make the Presario a great machine to demo to customers, but be cautious if you play a DVD movie - the lack of hardware MPEG sometimes makes itself visible in the playback, and the JBL active stereo speakers provided with this PC aren't terribly good either.

...here to talk about the Compaq Presario 6097EA. Ah, who am I kidding, course I mean the PC. I have had it for about 6 months now and is an upgrade from a Compaq Presario 2292 which I had for about 4 years. Yes, that`s the downside, 4 years ago I had a state-of-the-art machine and nowadays it just doesn`t cut the mustard. Here`s a list of what you are going to get for your money:
*Intel Pentium 4 2.2ghz processor
Should suffice for even the most ... ...connect using this method.
*Keyboard
Compaq internet keyboard, the usual stuff
*Mouse
Standard PS/2 scroll mouse. I later treat myself to a rechargeable cordless mouse which is great, so long as I remember to place it back in the charger after extended use!!
*Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
MS newest operating system
*Integrated Audio
This means that the audio device comes with the motherboard o.e. it is soldered into it therefore it cannot ...

Advantages: Quality brand Disadvantages: Hard and anoying to upgrade
I have had my Compaq Pressario 5400 PC for over 2 years now and with the expansion of technology, it quickly became out-dated. That seems to be the only problem with buying a PC these days, having to upgrade it every few years, which turns out to be quite expensive.
For a tower PC it was quite small, but looked attractive and wasn't too heavy in weight. I think i paid arround £899 for it, which was average at the time but not very good in today's ... ...are better Compaq machines on sale now than the one i bought, so these problems might not occur to you, but its your choice and i advise you shop around for a while and find a PC that meets your every day needs and requirements before you rush into anything. ...

...Packerd, Gateway and now my compaq Presario.
I said I would never buy a compaq because I had worked at a major retail store in the computer department and there were always so many returns on them that I figured they must not be a good computer.
My last one was a Gateway which should be another opinion as I had nothing but problems with it. I work from home and can't have my computer down so I went computer shopping.
The only thing I could find ... ...okay why not. It's been a couplr of years , maybe they have improved and if I don't like it I can always return it. That was about 8 months ago and I have not had one single problem nor even the need to call tech support so I am convinced.
Mine is the 5000 series and includes the following:
cd rom
dvd rom
a-drive
dvd storage
19" color monitor with side mount speakers (the covers are interchangeable on the speakers and front of the cpu so you ...
