The Smart Array 5300 series of high-performance Ultra3 array controllers provides reliable data protection for Compaq ProLiant servers and offers new levels of flexibility, thanks to an innovative modular design and new Advanced Data Guarding (RAID ADG) technology. In addition, the Smart Array 5300 (SA-5300) series controllers raise the standard to higher performance levels with several enhancements, including a new memory architecture and new RAID engine. Designed and tested with industry-standard ProLiant Servers for greater reliability, these controllers are ideal for the distributed workgroup server or centralized departmental server, and like other Smart Array controllers, the SA-5300 series features complete data compatibility with previous generations' Smart Array controllers for easy data migration and upgradability.

Advantages: Excellent quick printing, photos just add icing on the cake Disadvantages: Paper jams for drafts
...This is a printer with class, and it produces photos to boot as well. It can literally print any photos from a vast array of media cards (note the no of slots) or direct from camera using pict-bridge. The quality of the photos is reasonable with normal colour and black catridge, but becomes professional when using a photo cartridge coupled with photo paper.
Generally you cannot fault its ability to reproduce office documents in sharp clarity and relatively quick speed (depending on settings). But beware of using draft prints as this for some reason causes the printer to jam or crumple through the process. Ink catridges suprisingly outlast any other inkjet I have owned. HP 56, 57, 58 are used in this machine....

Advantages: Takes 6 disks in a 2U package Disadvantages: Not a great deal
...which allows you to have Raid1 or raid 5 arrays using the 6 internal hot plug disk slots.
********** Manageability*************
HP have a device called the Integrated Lights-Out Standard, this is a device that is integrated into the server and allows you to power off and restart the server as if you were stood in front of it, you can also watch and interact with the boot sequence, load virtual CD's and Floppy disks into the server from anywhere. With the purchase of an additional licence the ILO can provide keyboard and mouse interaction when the operating system has loaded, so you can be truely stood at the server keyboard from 1000's of miles away. One Observation I have of the ILO is that it can be slow for the screen to react so it is really for when all other tools such as terminal services have failed on you.

Advantages: High Density, excellent availabilty Disadvantages: Default SmartArray5i does not have option to add battery cache
...lots of these, make sure you use the HP cat5 type KVMs. It's so much easier to get a patch lead cabled to each one than trying to manage those chunky KVM leads.
As I mentioned in the title, the only other thing that is slightly annoying is that the onboard SmartArray 5i has no option to add a battery backed write cache. If you want to do that make sure you go for a SmartArray 5i+ or a different card....

The HP Photosmart 8250 is the third printer I've bought, and it's definately the best.
While it's print quality isn't quite as good as some printers on the market, it's definately amoung the best for the price - I paid only £99 for mine!
The big... more
