Manufacturer's product description
Compaq's new 8 port and 16 port Fiber Channel SAN switches represent the next generation of switching products for Storage Area Networks. These products enable enterprise class scalability and high performance connectivity between servers and StorageWorks RA8000 and ESA12000 storage systems. With improved hardware and software design and new functionality these switches form one of the cornerstones of Compaq's strategy for deploying SAN's and realizing the ENSA vision. The new switch products come in either an 8-port or 16-port model. Both models support new Universal ports which self configure to the type of device attached to them and automatically detect a fabric-attached device, a switch-to-switch connection or an arbitrated loop attached device. Both models use a common power supply and both models can be configured with redundant power supplies as options. A new version of the Fabric Operating System that provides backward compatibility between current Fiber Channel switches and the new models is included with the new switches. As with the current switches, both new switches include Compaq's WEB Based Management for ease of operation, as well as support for SNMP and a command line interface for additional management functionality.
......Male RJ45 cables that is.
Netgear have a good reputation when it comes to network products, and the long running production of FS108 switches is testament to that.
I have used several 8-portswitches and this is my favourite.
Fast
It supports 100 Megabits per second per port per direction. So you can be uploading 100 Megabits a second AND download 100 Megabits a second, making a total of 200 Megabits per port.
For the technophobic among us there are 8 bits in a byte, so 100 Megabits is 12.5 Megabytes. A fast broadband internet connect will most likely be 0.5 Megabits a second, which is 0.06 Megabytes a second... so this switch can shift a lot of data quickly.
Informative
Some switches have just one light per port to keep you informed. The FS108 has no less than FOUR lights per port! That's 24 lights plus 1 power...

Advantages: Sleek, small, easy to use Disadvantages: Not wall mountable
...This switch has been a great addition to my network. It allows for fast transfer sppeds and i have been using for over 3 months now with no problems. Unluckily it is not wall mountable which would have been useful, but it comes with some legs which can be used to stand it on its side. The lights on the front are very useful for indicating whether the connected device is operating at 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps. The device gets slightly warm, but no more than other electronic devices. Overall i am very pleased with this switch, it was very easy to set up; I just plugged it in and it worked. The included intructions are also very clear, with clear illustrations. I have quite a few Netgear items in my network along with some other brands and i always find i can rely on the Netgear equipment. Overall a very solid piece of equipment....

Advantages: small compact size, metallic body, passive cooling=no noise Disadvantages: gets a bit hot during summer
...Well there isn't much to say about this switch. I've bought 4 of these and they are all working fine.
This is basically the big brother of the FS108 switch. The FS108 is 100mb Full duplex switch (full duplex meaning it can send and receive data at the same time), which theoretically gives 200mb throughput (send/receive combined).
The GS108 is a 1000mb full duplex switch, which theoretically gives 2000mb throughput (send/receive combined).
Under real wolrd conditions, you can copy a 650mb file with a 100mb switch in under 5-6 minutes. With a 1000mb (gig) switch , you should be able to do it in under 2 minutes (hardware permitting). On average, you will more than likely get over double the transfer rate than a 100mb switch, and obviously it's a hell of a lot faster than a 100mb hub.
With copying the files am assuming you are...
