My slim pocket mate

Of these the only device which offered 64Mbytes of memory, a high specification Risc processor, loadable eprom memory which enables upgrades to the operating system and the system software, and a high specification LCD display with a ew technology for backlight facilities which gives exellent visibilty outdoors in daylight.

When you return o your office or workstation you can makeadditions, deletions or amendments to any or all of the above as the iPAQ can automatically synchronise with your home or office desktop.
Before deciding to purchase the iPAQ I looked at three main options:- 1)PDA's based upon PalmOS, the palm pilot operating system, 2) PDA's based upon the Microsoft Pocket PC operating system and 3) PDA's from Psion.
I discounted the Psion option as the company has announced its withdrawal from the PDA market to concentrate on other core products. I then looked at the technical specifications for the PalmOS based devices and the Pocket PC based devices including the Compaq iPAQ, the HP Jordana and the Casiopea. Of these the only device which offered 64Mbytes of memory, a high specification Risc processor, loadable eprom memory which enables upgrades to the operating system and the system software, and a high specification LCD display with a ew technology for backlight facilities which gives exellent visibilty outdoors in daylight.
The display also provies a high resolution image. The Casiopea and the Jordana offered similar features. The additional advantage of selecting a device based upon the Pocket PC is that the operating system comes from Microsoft and has an inherent compatibility with Microsoft desktop applications such as Outlook, Word and Excel.
I am finding the iPAQ to be easy to use although changing from one application to another and closing applications could e improved. The iPAQ is thin, lightweight and easily fits into your pocket or bag. It has a large screen in relation to it's size ( a big plus for me !)
You can input either from the soft keyboard or from handwriting (this bit is more difficult), it does alow for free form writing. The iPAQ makes efficient use of its memory but you will need to organise an additional power supply when moving off site as the battery life can only be dcribed as being adequate.
The device also allows you to dictate voice messages and include voice messages within e-mails and word documents. It provides a calculator, an MP3 player and a video viewer.
All in all I can see why so many ciao members have given the iPAQ such a positive rating as it is an excellent choice for anyone selecting aPDA. It is however relatively expensive at around £500 but in my view is the best in it's range.

The cost was STG.320.00 which many may find expensive.
This pocket PC is amazing. It has 16 MB of ROM, which holds the Win CE operating system. It has 32 MB of RAM, which is for your data storage and any other programs you might want to install.
It is very lightweight and compact and weighs just 6 ounces.
A very important feature is that you can allocate how much of the 32MB you want for your ... ...programs.
The operating speed and performance is just brilliant and it has a 206 MHz Intel processor. You can run several programs at once without losing out on the performance.
The looks also are just great. Very eye catching with its silver casing. You get a lot of envious looks. The colour display is probably what sets it apart from the rest. The spec is a LCD 4096 with 240 x 320 version. The screen is clearly visible even in adverse light conditions.

I’ve owned an iPAQ for three months now and would like to offer some thoughts on it after using it pretty extensively during that period. Some of what I say will be applicable to all PDAs, and some only to the iPAQ. I start the review by describing the iPAQ then offer some thoughts about PDAs in general. The best features of the iPAQ in my view are the screen, and the connectivity. The colour screen is just beautiful. It is very high definition, ... ...with six back-light settings, from the lowest powersave dim light, to the “super bright” which for short periods of use in daylight, or under fluorescent lights, lets the display shine out really clearly. ...a Palm V and a Compaq IPAQ 3850. I am crying quietly. Why? Because having been quite content with my Palm V for several years I recently convinced myself that I needed an IPAQ. What a prat. To exacerbate matters, I didn't just settle for a basic unit. Oh no, I had to go the whole hog and get the SatNav jacket and all the full nine yards didn't I? After a brief (and I MEAN brief) honeymoon with the thing I have come to the conclusion that the IPAQ ... ...twice as bug-ridden and has half the battery life of the Palm. As if that wasn't enough, it has an operating system which, like its big brother Windows, needs to have a lie down every now and again. To accuse it of being underdeveloped would be to do an injustice to underdeveloped things.
The one saving grace of the IPAQ is its brilliant colour screen quality. However, having said that, I would gladly trade screen quality for a battery life long ...

I have used my IPAQ now for about six months and I am very impressed. It is fast and easy to use and looks absolutely great, I can do everything that I need to do and more and best of all is the ooooohs and aaaaahhhhs from my very jealous friends ;-))

The IPAQ steaals a march over the opposition with good looks and a very wide range of additonal features which are easy to use and work well in conjunction with the desktop PC.
I would say that the IPAQ is for the person who requires easy to use diary/organisation ...

Theres something in there that gives you a clue as to what it is. Can you guess which bit? Yup, thats right, "pocket PC". There have been many PDA's (Personal Digital Assistant) over the last few years that have claimed to be "pocket PC's", but few could really live up to the expectation that the name gives.
First off was the Psion series. These had a full "QWERTY" keyboard, a touch sensitive screen, and minimal sound ... ...Pocket PC 2002 (HP, Toshiba, Compaq to name a few).
