My main use for the PDA is as a portable PC, laptops aren't all that easy to carry around and just not as easy as putting a PDA in your pocket or clipping it onto your belt. The iPaq is a good all... more

Advantages Advantages Great build quality. good range of accesories

Disadvantages Disadvantages Battery life not great and battery built into unit

I have had my ipaq since early august. The pda has proved to be reliable and very useful. I use it on a daily basis and have yet to find any real problems. The ipaq has one of the best screens of any pda and has 64mb of memory. You get pocket pc versions of most of the usual microsoft programs. Beware that you know that these are not the same as the microsoft aplications on the pc. They are cut down versions and although you can exchange data between the pda and the pc don't expect that the documents will keep the same formating if you transfer one written in Microsoft office. This is due to ... more

Advantages Advantages A pc in the pocket

Disadvantages Disadvantages screen difficult to see in bright sunshine

I was loooking for a satellite navigation system a couple of years ago so that I would not need to carry a lot of maps with me at work (country wide delivery driver at the time) & the way to go seemed to be a pocket pc with the 'plug in' extras. I ended up with a second hand iPAQ 3870 (from eBay) and added (from anther seller) TomTom Navigator3 (just released) & Haicom GPS receiver which plugged into the cigarette lighter & the iPAQ, charging the internal battery whilst in use and giving the GPS data to the software at the same time. Although second hand the iPAQ came with all the disks, the ... more

Advantages Advantages Does everything you need it to

Disadvantages Disadvantages Nightmare to set up Bluetooth dial-up (not necessarily a fault of the iPaq though)

I decided to upgrade from my old Palm Pilot in Jan 2004 and wanted to move to something that had the Microsoft Mobile software - having played with a friends XDA. I chose the iPaq because friends had recommended it - but was going to go for one of the newer, smaller HP ones (the 1940 at £270-£300). However, when I went to John Lewis to buy it (as I always get my techy stuff from there to get the 2 year warrantly) they had a 3870 which I think had been a return or something like that - but still boxed. I got it for £170 and it's the best bargain I've ever found. If you can find one it's daft to ... more

Advantages Advantages A portable GPS for the price of a calculator.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Slow compared to the latest PDA's

Ive had my trusty IPAQ 3870, for almost 2 years now. At the time I paid £200 for it and now I see you can get them for about £40. Its a great little machine. Its got Bluetooth, Infrared, a voice recorder, notebook, address book, calculator etc etc. The best use that I have is as a Satellite navigation device. I hook it up in the car, connect it to a sat receiver (approx £30) and run some software called "Destinator" and it tells me where to go. Its worth its weight in Gold just for this. The other essential use is as a contacts book, I can sync it with my PC and update from outlook or just ... more

Advantages Advantages Reasonably Light, Ergonomic, Easy to set up and use.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Screen can be hard to see in direct sunlight and smallish memory to start with.

My main use for the PDA is as a portable PC, laptops aren't all that easy to carry around and just not as easy as putting a PDA in your pocket or clipping it onto your belt. The iPaq is a good all round PDA, it has all the software you need and any extra software is easily found and simply installed. I know this is an older PDA now, but it has a good system, runs very fast and is very simple to set up and use. The number of accessories that are available with an iPaq also make these PDA's a very good investment. You can easily make it into a Sat Nav system or get it hooked up to the net via a ... more
